October 21, 2018 ST. ROSE OF LIMA PARISH Page 3 TOO MUCH INFORMATION! There is a common expression: Too much information! We usually use it when people tell us details about their lives that we don t want or need to know. Today, when James and John ask Jesus a simple question, making their request for places of honor in the kingdom, a simple answer might have been in order. Instead, as he often does, Jesus answers a question with a question; today it s about drinking the cup of suffering. Then, once the others are indignant over James and John s outrageous request, he proceeds to give them what may have been too much information for followers who were simply interested in the pursuit of glory. But this information, though it can sometimes seem too much for us, is essential for our lives as disciples. In Isaiah, in Hebrews, and in Mark today, we learn this information. It is in suffering, in weakness, in self-giving service to others, that we come to understand the kingdom. It is the information we need to find our place and come to be honored in the reign of God. CHURCH CONTRIBUTION UPDATE for St. Rose of Lima School Families The Parish Office has mailed the 2018 Contribution Statement to all families. Please take time to review your report to confirm that all donations have been applied to your account. Remember that the Pastor s Discretionary Discount for tuition is available to those Roman Catholic families who are registered members of St. Rose of Lima Church and approved by the Pastor. In addition to being registered, the families must also: q q q q Regularly participate in Sunday mass and Holy Days of Obligation at St. Rose Support the mission of the parish by giving fully of their time, talent, and treasure Families must have completed all service hours (PPP) by participating in the school carnival and other parish events Contribute a minimum total of $1,250 by utilizing the weekly parish envelopes or weekly online giving through My E- Offering throughout the year The Pastor will review and approve families eligible for the Pastor s Discretionary Discount in December. In order to be eligible for this discount in the 2019-2020 school year, documented weekly support of St. Rose must be evident in your account by December 31, 2018. CROCHET & KNITTING MINISTRY We make prayer shawls, lap blankets, and baby blankets that are distributed to the Veterans Hospital, Respect Life or sick parishioners needing comfort. The NOVENA OF MASSES will be observed at the 8:15 a.m. Mass on November 2nd. The envelopes for this purpose are available at the Church entrance. Also, you should have already received one in your monthly packet. Please return these envelopes in the collection basket or to the Parish Office. The envelopes with the names of your beloved dead will be placed on the altar for the Novena of Masses. MASS INTENTIONS Would you like to pray for a loved one who has died? Would you like a special way to thank God for his blessings? Is there a living person for whom you would like to pray? You can do all this by having them remembered at a daily or Sunday Mass. Mass intentions may be scheduled at the parish office. Mass offering is $10 per Mass. REQUESTS FOR PASTORAL VISITS With the ongoing growth of our Parish and School community, there are more requests for pastoral visits among our elderly and home-bound parishioners. These words from today s second reading invite us to trust completely upon the everactive care and compassion of God in our daily lives. Through the fullness of Christ s loving humanity and redeeming divinity we are continually strengthened to be faith-filled disciples and servants for others. How will you accept these gifts and then share the power of Christ s love with one another? PRAYER FOR PROTECTION FROM STORMS God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your children in thanksgiving for your loving care and protection. We ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes which may threaten us in the coming seasons. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind and the rain.
