ORDINARY TIME WEDNESDAY EVENING DINNER AND ACTIVITIES Join us this week for our Wednesday evening dinner and classes! Dinner is from 5:00 to 6:00pm in The Wright Place. This week s menu is: Chicken Pot Pie, Collard Greens, Salad, Biscuits or Cornbread and Dessert. Please make your reservations in the registration pads, by calling the church office (432-1434), or online. Session 2 of Wednesday night classes begin after dinner at 6:00pm. Many classes continue and two new ones begin. You are invited to join any class at any time. Our hope is that everyone can find a place to grow during this Fall Semester. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday night. (Note: The Senior Pastor s study will not meet this week as he is out of town. The class will resume on October 19.) CHRISTIAN EDUCATION FALL SESSION 2 Additional Christian Education classes begin this week and include: Mere Christianity Mondays at 6:00pm Perry Home This class is a discussion through C.S. Lewis s book Mere Christianity. This book provides an unequaled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to hear this powerful apologetic for the Christian faith. We are now in the Season after Pentecost, also called Ordinary Time. The Season after Pentecost begins each year on the day after Pentecost and ends the day before the First Sunday of Advent. The scripture lessons in the lectionary for this half of the year go in a semi-continuous cycle through books of the Bible rather than follow a theme; the gospel lessons cover Jesus teaching ministry. WHO ARE WE? + Cutting Edge: We use new songs, modern musical styles, two huge HD screens, and social networking to bring the gospel of Jesus to our postmodern culture. + Tradition Rich: Unlike most contemporary services we fully embrace our Christian heritage. Our service centers around Holy Communion and finds the ancient liturgy of the early church to be highly relevant. + Art Embracing: We value the creative arts in our congregation. Our service uses visual arts to help deepen our experience of worship. + Christ Centered: We strive to keep Christ at the center of all we do. Our focus is not so much about making Christ relevant to the world, but making The Five Love Languages Wednesdays at 6:00pm Perry Home Challenges in marriage often have a simple root cause: we speak different love languages. Come join this discussion with the Rev. Brandon Bures as we explore the five basic emotional love languages. Questions of Faith Wednesdays at 6:00pm Perry Home If you are searching, striving to grow in faith and to relate belief to life, you will find this video series helpful and stimulating. The Protestant, Jewish, and Roman Catholic participants range from priests to psychotherapists, Old Testament scholars to evangelists, and preachers to sociologists. DATABASE UPDATE GIVING STATEMENTS Last week we began the process of upgrading our church database management system. Due to the upgrade process monthly giving statements have been delayed and should arrive the week of October 10. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any questions, please contact Liz Noyes, Director of Finance, at 432-1434. the world relevant to Christ. Our worship is not about us, but about God. WHAT DOES MEAN? ICON is the Greek word for image. Worship at ICON is highly visual and experiential with the large screens, candles and processional cross. The Bible proclaims that we are made in God s image (Genesis 1), but through our sin we have tarnished that image. We believe that Christ is the true image of God (Hebrews 1) and through him God is restoring us to our true image. The Bible says (1 John 3:2), What we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: that when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. Our hope is to be an ICON of Christ. TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST October 9, 2016

WELCOME Welcome to ICON at First United Methodist Church. We are delighted that you have chosen to worship with us this morning. Founded in 1821, First Church is the oldest Protestant church in the area and the oldest Methodist church in Florida. This historic church, with four Sunday services, has a membership of 3200 and is overflowing with life. We hope you will consider becoming a member of our church family. VISITOR/NEW MEMBER CLASS We welcome all visitors and new members that are interested in learning more about First Church to an introductory class that consists of four parts. The class assembles at 9:30am in room PH101. Today s class, Ministries of First Church, was about all the programs and ministries of the church. Next week, Serving at First Church will help you find your place to use your gifts and talents in service in the church and community. There will not be a class on October 23, instead the fourth class, Tour of First Church, will take place on the fifth Sunday, October 30. We hope you join us each week. THE GROWING SEASON UPDATE As of October 7, we received 352 pledge cards for 2017 totaling $1,449,611. The current year s budget is $2,183,699. If you haven t turned in an Estimate of Giving Card, please consider doing so. Pledge cards are available in the pews. Fill out the form and grow with us in faith, knowledge, and service. NURSERY AND CHILDREN S BULLETINS Nursery is available for children up to 5 years old. If you need help locating the nursery, please see an usher for assistance. Also, children s worship bulletins and crayons are available in the lobby. NEXT WEEK AT FIRST CHURCH Join us next week here at First Church as we come together to worship God on the Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost. Dr. Wachob will preach at the 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00am worship services in the Main Sanctuary. Next week s lectionary scriptures: Jeremiah 31:27-34; Psalm 119:97-104 or Psalm 19; 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5; Luke 18:1-8.
