APRIL 5, 2015 The Lord is truly risen. To him be glory and power for all the ages of eternity, alleluia, alleluia! Dear Parishioners and Friends, Welcome to St. Rita! If you are visiting family and friends and home from college or the military, we are glad you can join us today. May this day be one of joy and rest for you this Easter! Throughout Lent, we heard from the scriptures about God s desire to establish a covenant, a covenant that would make for a perfect union between human beings and God. Once there was a perfect union shared between God and Adam and Eve. But early in human history, as described in the book of Genesis, this covenant would be broken, time and time again by sin, and the lack of human response. Even the prophets sent by God would be put to death. God s only Son Jesus came proclaiming a new time of promise and hope. He would speak about a new and everlasting covenant. But Jesus, even though he was the Son of God, was also rejected, spat upon and led to be crucified on the cross. The miracles he worked and the message of Good News he brought, were seen as a threat to the old, established order. The rulers, who were more concerned about their own personal power and comfort, wanted nothing to do with Jesus. The poor, the sick and the helpless were attracted to Jesus and the rulers didn t want anyone who could advance the plight of such people. So they plotted his death, and probably never thought that his execution on the Cross would amount to anything. They simply wanted to do away with him, to get rid of Jesus and his message. They wanted to have life go on as normal without him. But no one realized that Jesus came to conquer something much stronger than evil human plans. God s plan was to save US! God s plan was to use this rejection of His Son on the Cross so that we could be saved and come to know of God s immense love. This new covenant from God to us would be everlasting, and no longer be dependent on poor human response and sin. The Cross is still rejected by some, ridiculed and misunderstood by many. But we Christians understand the significance of the Cross because it is transformed from an instrument of torture and death into a promise for life. Today for us Christians, the Cross is not a sign of failure and hopelessness, but a new sign of hope and God s promise. In this day and age, we need the Cross of Jesus more than ever. We need to draw near to God through his Son Jesus. Only Jesus can make the graces of waters of Baptism pour into our hearts so that our lives are forever changed and bound to a new relationship with God. Jesus makes our union with God, no longer a distant dream, but a real reality. Evil will never triumph over good. Death will not be the end for us. War and hatred will not endure. Jesus reigns! Thanks be to God! P.S. Be kind to the chocolate Rabbits! May God bless you with Joy this Easter! Fr. Gonyo * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * COMPANIONS IN GRIEF BEREAVEMENT EVENING Monday, April 13 7:30pm at Holy Trinity Church Fr. John Mulligan will be our guest speaker.
