Those wearing a hearing aid should switch to T in order to benefit from it. A collection will be taken during the Offertory Hymn. If you are a UK tax payer, please use the white Gift Aid envelope in the pew, remembering to date it and print your details. If you give by standing order or the like please put a token in the offering in the offering bags as they go around as an act of worship and as a token of what you give in thanks to God. Children are welcome at every service. If your child becomes restless during the service, please feel free to go in and out. You are warmly invited to join us for coffee, tea and biscuits after the morning services. We are an inclusive church, called to be caring, loving and welcoming to all. To be a lively community connecting with God s love in new and imaginative ways

Collect, Reading, Psalm and Post-Communion Prayer COLLECT Almighty God, whose Son revealed in signs and miracles the wonder of your saving presence: renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us by your mighty power; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. ALTERNATIVE COLLECT God of all mercy, your Son proclaimed good news to the poor, release to the captives, and freedom to the oppressed: anoint us with your Holy Spirit and set all your people free to praise you in Christ our Lord. FIRST READING Genesis 14.17 20 After Abram s return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King s Valley). And King Melchizedek of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High. He blessed him and said, Blessed be Abram by God Most High, maker of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand! And Abram gave him one-tenth of everything. SECOND READING Revelation 19.6 10 I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunder-peals, crying out, Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready; to her it has been granted to be clothed with fine linen, bright and pure for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he said to me, These are true words of God. Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, You must not do that! I am a fellowservant with you and your comrades who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. PSALM Psalm 128 BLESSED are all they that fear the Lord : and walk in his ways. For thou shalt eat the labours of thine hands : O well is thee and happy shalt thou be. Thy wife shall be as the fruitful vine : up on the walls of thine house. Thy children like the olive branches : round -- a bout thy table. Lo thus shall the man be blessed : that fear eth the Lord. The Lord from out of Sion shall so bless thee : that thou shalt see Jerusalem in prosperity all thy life long. 2nd Yea that thou shalt see thy children s children : and peace up on Israel Part. GLORIA

GOSPEL John 2.1 11 There was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. Now standing there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward. So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now. Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. POST COMMUNION Almighty Father, whose Son our Saviour Jesus Christ is the light of the world: may your people, illumined by your word and sacraments, shine with the radiance of his glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Note that you do not need to be a UK tax payer to use either scheme. For more details or if you have any queries/are unable to find your envelopes, please contact the Parish Giving Recorder, Claire Petevinos (giving.recorder@parishofharpenden.org or tel 768721). A FRIENDLY TEA GROUP FOR THE BEREAVED: today at 2.30pm in St Nicholas Church Hall. All welcome. PRAYER REQUESTS: If you would like prayer for yourself or a someone you know, clergy pray daily for those who have asked for our prayers. Anyone may put a name on our prayer list by contacting the clergy, a Reader, or the parish office. If you wish to be prayed for publicly at our Sunday Services please say so, otherwise your name remains on a private prayer list. ECUMENICAL SERVICE FOR WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY will be held at St John the Baptism, Harpenden, at 6.30pm this evening. Everyone is welcome. There will be no other evening service in our parish today. CHURCHES TOGETHER IN HERTFORDSHIRE SERVICE AT THE END OF THE WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY to be held at High Street Methodist Church this Thursday, 25 January, 7.30pm. The preacher is Bishop Paul McAleenan, Roman Catholic Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Westminster and the Presiding Minister is Revd Dr David Chapman, Methodist District Chair for Beds, Essex & Herts. All are welcome. PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT ON SALISBURY AVENUE: Jarvis Homes Ltd have submitted a planning application for two blocks of flats on 2 Salisbury Avenue and the adjoining plot at the corner of Rothamsted Avenue. The blocks will be three storeys high and contain 11 flats. There will only be one car parking space for each flat, plus one single space for all visitors to the two blocks, so cars and vans from the flats are likely to park on Salisbury Avenue and the surrounding Avenues. There may also be an increase of traffic in the Avenues. This could all make it more difficult to park for people who attend St Nicholas Church, St Nicholas School and Our Lady of Lourdes. Full details can be found by logging onto the St Albans Council planning website using the planning application reference 5/2017/3424. The website can be used for submitting comments to the Council. For any additional information please speak to Henry Loweth. If you would like a Home Visit or Home Communion, please contact Parish Clergy or the Parish Office.

X-SITE: Saturday 27 January from 6pm 8pm at High Street Methodist, school years 3-6. To register your child, go to the register page on the website harpendenxsite.org.uk. If your child has attended previously in THIS ACADEMIC YEAR you can book a place by emailing harpendenxsite@gmail.com Booking closes today, Sunday 21 January. A HUG HARPENDEN UPDATE: At our December meeting Audrey and I pooled all the 9 patch squares people had sewn to date. We have over 40 9-Patch squares done by new, young, and slightly older more seasoned needlewomen. Already well on our way to having 4 Quilts ready to patch together & quilt! We aim to hold a Saturday morning workshop to both make more 9 patches (come and learn; it is not too late) and to sew together those already made. Sign up when you see the notice. I thought it would be a good idea to sell at least one quilt to raise the funds to finish all the others. Whatever happens we will show completed quilts and those still in progress at the Art Show at the end of June. Janet Spicer and Audrey Went ALL CHURCH SCHOOL APPLICATIONS All children intending to apply to St George's and St Nicholas Schools need to complete a Record Of Attendance in order to assist with the preparation of clergy references. The Record of Attendance needs to be completed for the duration of the following periods prior to date of application: 2 years for St George's and 1 year for St Nicholas. Please see the schools website for further details of the schools' admissions criteria including both the relevant period of attendance and frequency of attendance required by both St George's and St Nicholas schools. Any queries regarding the admissions criteria should be directed to the schools' admissions officers.
