TODAY' S MASS Blessings 011 him who comes in the name of the Lord! Great crowds of people spread their cloaks on the road, while others were cutting branches fi-om the trees and spreading them in his path. The crowds who went in front of him and those who followed were all shouting: 'Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessings on him who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heavens! ' And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil. 'Who is this?' people asked, and the crowds answered, 'This is the prophet Jesus. from Nazareth in Galilee. ' A POEM FOR PALM SUNDAY (The Donkey - G.K.Chesterton) When fishes flew and forests walked and figs grew upon thorn, some moment,,,hen the moon was blood, then smely I was born. Wit.h monsttous head and sickening cry and ears like errant wings, the devil's walking parody of all fom-footed things. The tattered outlaw of the earth of ancient crooked will: starve, scomge, deride me: I am dumb, I keep my secret still. Fools! for I also had my hom; one far fierce hour and sweet: There was a shout about my ears, and pahns before my feet. The ceremony today when the palms are blessed recalls the dramatic occasion when Jesus entered Jerusalem the week before he died. He came humbly on a donkey, yet he was acclaimed by the people as son of David, therefore heir to the kingdom. It is a stark lesson after this to listen to the story of the Passion of Jesus; we learn of the fickleness of human nature and our own weakness. It is customary to take your blessed palm home with you and place it in some prominent place to remind you of the story ' and its message. L-D-S
