September 3, 2017 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH Stewardship Reflection on Readings JER 20: 7-9; PS 63: 2-6, 8-9; ROM 12: 1-2; MT 16: 21-27 Our Second Reading from St. Paul s letter to the Romans is quite short, but as is ever the case with Holy Scripture it contains a central message which is quite important to us. One of the ongoing challenges of being Catholic and Christian in today s society is that society, cultural norms, sometimes seem to work against our efforts to live as followers and disciples of Christ. Paul sums up that struggle succinctly as he says, Do not conform yourselves to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. Paul offers two suggestions in terms of combating the temptation to conform and agree. First, he calls for a renewal of our minds. Often in today s society the standard opinion is that it is feelings, how we feel, that are most important. Living in that way ignores the mind approach. Second, if we do try to sort things out intellectually we can only be successful in God s eyes if we seek truth. The question we must pose to ourselves and to which we need to seek a conclusion is not How do I feel? or even What do I think? The important question for us is What is true and what does God s Word say? The philosopher and author C. S. Lewis defined truth simply when he wrote: No philosophical theory which I have yet come across is a radical improvement on the words of Genesis, that in the beginning God made heaven and earth. Respect Life The sufferings caused by chronic or terminal illness cry out for our compassion, a word whose root meaning is to suffer with another person. True compassion alleviates suffering while maintaining solidarity with those who suffer. It does not put lethal drugs in their hands and abandon them. The Great Adventure Bible Timeline Study Have you always wondered how the New and Old Testaments of the Bible come together to reveal God s love for His people, Israel, and the Catholic Church? Do you desire to better understand your Catholic faith and to grow deeper in your relationship with God? The Great Adventure Bible Timeline is a Catholic Bible Study which helps unlock how the mysteries of the Old and New Testaments create a unity of God s Word. The study takes you on a 24 week journey through the entire Bible, through each period of Salvation History. You ll explore the major people, places and events of the Bible and learn how they form the foundation of our Catholic faith. Reading, praying, and studying God s Word will lead you to a profound encounter with God and to a deeper understanding of God s loving plan for your life. TWO CLASSES will be offered beginning the week of September 18. Evening class Monday evenings, 7:00-9:00pm Facilitator: Diane Littleton, diane.littleton@gmail.com 719-201-6174 Morning class Tuesday mornings, 9:30-11:30am Facilitator: Vicki Kapron, vickikapron@gmail.com, 282-7696. Weekly faith topic Parent Questions Paul Turner At the start of a baptism, parents hear two questions. The first is, What name do you give your child? The is a no-brainer; by this time family and friends knows the sex, height, weight, and name of the baby. Still, naming the baby in the church is a formal act of presentation. This is the name by which the child will be known and called, even with the very words of baptism. The answer to this first question is easy, but speaking the child s name is profound. The second question is deceptively simple. What do you ask of God s Church for N.? Many parents give the obvious answer, the one the rite offers as the first choice: Baptism. It s correct. And profound. But parents may give another answer, and the rite suggests these: faith, the grace of Christ, entrance into the Church, or eternal life. These options make this question provocative. Just what do these parents want? What do they want of the church gathered here? If the baptism takes place during Sunday Mass, the parents have an opportunity to speak their preference to the church gathered before them. Imagine the priest or deacon asking the question this way: What do you parents ask everyone else gathered here to do for your child? Imagine the answers. Set an example of prayer and service. Teach my child by your words and actions what it means to love Christ. Be there for my child when I need someone to help. The first question is easy to answer. But the second deserves some preparation. Before coming to the church that day, parents should prepare a good answer to a good question: What do you ask of God s Church for your child?
