March 17, 2019 Second day of Lent ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH Stewardship Reflection on Readings Ex 3: 1-8A, 13-15; Ps 103: 1-4, 6-8, 11; 1 Cor 10: 1-6, 10-12; Lk 13: 1-9 Our Old Testament Reading, the First Reading, on this Third day of Lent, relates the narrative of Moses and the Burning Bush. Like many readings which we hear throughout our lives, this is an image and a story with which most of us are familiar. Also, through Moses experience there is a stewardship message for each of us. As Moses approaches the bush, God calls out Moses, Moses! The fact that the Lord repeats Moses name gives the situation a sense of urgency. Perhaps God feels the same sense of urgency in relation to each of us. God calls us, and He calls us by name, but too often we do not hear, or we do not pay attention. Probably most often we are not even listening. The second aspect of stewardship indicated in this passage from Holy Scripture is found in God s next statement, Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. Removing sandals was an act of respect, a sign of humility. To fully live lives of stewardship requires these traits from each of us to be alert and aware that God is speaking to us, but we must listen, and to live our lives, especially our stewardship lives, with a sense of humility. That is, after all, how we really show love for our God and for one another. DAILY MASS FOR ANNUNCIATION On March 25th, there will be a Mass at 12:15 for the Annunciation of the Lord. There will also be Confessions at 11:50am. This is a Solemnity not a Holy Day of Obligation. The Annunciation of the Lord is when the angel Gabriel visits Blessed Virgin Mary to inform her that she was to be the Mother of the Savior. After giving her consent to God s word, Mary became the Mother of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. It also brings change to our environment and music during the Mass. Have you noticed these changes? * Our banners and clergy vestments are violet, the color of penitence. * We fast from the Gloria, and the acclamation Alleluia! * We sing a different Gospel Acclamation: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory! * We fast from instrumental music, providing only enough accompaniment to support the singing. * This year, we will end our Mass departing in silence, to focus our thoughts on our Lenten practices. When we go without these sounds during Lent, their return at Christ s Resurrection brings us increased joy! Allow the change of sounds to help you center your prayer, and relish their return at Easter! JOB OPENINGS St. Joseph s in Colorado Springs is seeking a PT Facility Manager. The Angelus will be prayed at 12:10pm, before Daily Mass THE ANGELUS V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary, full of grace, The Lord is with Thee; Blessed art thou among women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now and at the hour of our death. Amen V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord. R. Be it done unto me according to thy word. Hail Mary, etc. V. And the Word was made Flesh. R. And dwelt among us. Hail Mary, etc. V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. LET US PRAY Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts, that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ Thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen Although the Angelus has been traditionally said three times daily, at 6 am, noon and 6 pm, you can pray it at anytime! It is still accompanied by the ringing of a bell (the Angelus bell) in some places such as Vatican City and parts of Germany and Ireland. The Angelus reminds us of the Annunciation when the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary with great (if somewhat startling) news! The Angelus pays tribute to a crucial aspect of Mary s role in the Incarnation, when it quotes from Luke s Gospel be it done to me according to thy word (Lk 1:38). This wonderful event could not have happened without her consent, without what is known as her fiat. By saying yes to God in allowing herself to become His mother, she showed us the ultimate example of trust in our Creator! Download the Angelus app at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.angelus and get reminders to pray. SISTERS OF MERCIFUL JESUS The Sisters of the Merciful Jesus will be coming to our diocese from March 21-26. The following is a list of their activities and devotions at St. Patrick Catholic Church while they are with us. In addition they will be visiting St. Peter Catholic School and Catholic Charities. Please join us and welcome them to our Diocese. ST. JOSEPH Everything we know about the husband of Mary and the foster father of Jesus comes from Scripture and that has seemed too little for those who made up legends about him. We know Joseph was a compassionate, caring man. When he discovered Mary was pregnant after they had been betrothed, he knew the child was not his but was as yet unaware that she was carrying the Son of God. He knew women accused of adultery could be stoned to death, so he resolved to send her away quietly to not expose her to shame or cruelty. However, when an angel came to Joseph in a dream and told him, 20 "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins," he did as the angel told him and took Mary as his wife. (Matthew 1:19-25). When the angel came again to tell him that his family was in danger, he immediately left everything he owned, all his family and friends, and fled to a strange country with his young wife and the baby. He waited in Egypt without question until the angel told him it was safe to go back (Matthew 2:13-23). We know Joseph loved Jesus. His one concern was for the safety of this child entrusted to him. Not only did he leave his home to protect Jesus, but upon his return settled in the obscure town of Nazareth out of fear for his life. When Jesus stayed in the Temple we are told Joseph (along with Mary) searched with great anxiety for three days for him (Luke 2:48). We also know that Joseph treated Jesus as his own son for over and over the people of Nazareth say of Jesus, "Is this not the son of Joseph?" (Luke 4:22) We know Joseph respected God. He followed God's commands in handling the situation with Mary and going to Jerusalem to have Jesus circumcised and Mary purified after Jesus' birth. We are told that he took his family to Jerusalem every year for Passover, something that could not have been easy for a working man. Since Joseph does not appear in Jesus' public life, at his death, or resurrection, many historians believe Joseph probably had died before Jesus entered public ministry. Joseph is patron saint of the Universal Church, the dying, families, fathers, expectant mothers (pregnant women), travelers, immigrants, and house sellers and buyers.
