Dodgeville United Methodist Church 327 North Iowa Street Dodgeville, WI 53533 Prepared especially for Newsletter February 2019 Members & Friends of Dodgeville United Methodist Church

The 2018 Dodgeville United Methodist Church Report Card By the time this newsletter comes out the National Basketball Association (NBA) season will be a little over half way done, and the Milwaukee Bucks are doing very well, doing much better than anyone expected under new head coach Mike Budenholzer. I was checking out a website that had given the coaching staff and players of the Milwaukee Bucks a letter grade based on their performance through half the season. Players like Giannis Antetokounmpo scored very well J. With the Packers season over, however, and no playoff appearance to speak of, the report cards for the 2018 season are not so good. Between playoff football, NBA and college basketball, and baseball spring training coming sooner than you think, I have had sports on the brain, and thinking about all these team grades had me thinking about Dodgeville United Methodist Church as we reflect on 2018. I don t necessarily plan on giving out grades, but with 2018 statistical reports due at the end of January, I can t help but do some comparison and evaluation. Church Attendance: In 2017, we averaged 88 people in worship, which for the first time in many years saw an actual increase in attendance. At the end of 2018, we averaged 86 people in worship. Statistically, I would say that we are about the same, but it is certainly my hope that we turn the page into 2019 that we will see this number trending up consistently. My messages throughout the month of January and into February will be emphasizing our strategy as a church to do this!

Membership: When I first arrived as pastor of Dodgeville UMC, our statistical report said that we had a membership of 220. Carla and I quickly discovered that these numbers were an inaccurate reflection of our membership; it was actually about 190 at the time. Through the hard work of the Membership Care and Concern Committee we have been in contact with some of our members that we have lost touch with, to see if they have found a new congregational home or were no longer interested in being connected to the church. At the end of 2017, our membership was 174. At the end of 2018, it was 172. We have taken quite a few folks off our membership who were not active, but have also added several new individuals and families as well. Financial Giving: At the end of 2017, we ended the year pretty close to balanced, but were just a little bit behind. It also required us to make a strong push at the end of the year using the Christmas offering to do so. At the end of 2018, we ended the year $9,000 ahead of expenses, and we were able to give a $1,200 Christmas offering to mission organizations as well. We also paid 92% of our apportionments in 2018 and we are planning to move to 100% payment moving forward in 2019. Missions: Feedings Friends, by far our most impactful ministry as church, continues to grow in the number of people that it reaches. In 2017, we averaged around 100 people served each week at the meal. In 2018, we averaged 120 people served each week. How exciting to see this ministry continue to grow! I am certainly encouraged by our financial situation as a church. We will be seeking to pay our apportionments in full this year, hiring a part-time custodian, and encouraging the Trustees to begin work on some much needed projects around the church. We are being optimistic in our projections for 2019 and I am hopeful that our giving trends continue. Certainly our membership numbers and worship attendance numbers are steady, but we would like to see them grow as well. Where is God leading us as we begin 2019? I look forward to the opportunities that we will have to pray about this, and discover it together. ~ Pastor Jim

We re Hiring: Part-Time Custodial Position I realize that when the newsletter comes out, there will only be one week left, but we want to get the word out as much as we can! Dodgeville United Methodist Church is looking to hire a part-time custodian for the church. The position will be 10 hours per week at $14 per hour. The work hours are flexible. GIVING Prayer and Gratitude Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! (2 Corinthians 9:15) Henri Nouwen has said, As our prayer deepens into constant awareness of God s goodness, the spirit of gratitude grows within us. This implies a cause and effect relationship: prayer causes gratitude. Therefore, it seems that just saying, or praying, Thanks is not enough. What does prayer do to grow gratitude? Focuses us on God. Prayer moves our focus from ourselves to God. It reminds us that we are not intended to be selfsufficient, rather, God provides us with we need, sometimes, even with the gift that moves us toward God s grace. Reminds us Who is the Giver. God is the giver of all good gifts and graces. All of our blessings come from God. Through prayer, we come to recognize that we have so much to be thankful for just pray for the most important people and blessings in your life and you will find that the list gets very long very quickly. Keeps us Positive. With our eyes on our blessings, we have little room for complaining and negativity. One cannot be thankful and negative at the same time. Moves us closer to God. Debbie McDaniel has pointed out that prayer, opens up the door for continued blessings. It invites His presence. Our spirits are refreshed and renewed in Him. God loves to give good gifts to His children. He delights in our thankfulness and pours out His Spirit and favor over those who give honor and gratitude to Him. This is what Stewardship looks like in the Kingdom of God. Let us pray ourselves and our churches into the Kingdom. Jim Wells, Wisconsin United Methodist Foundation
