CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION 13216 Detroit Avenue Lakewood, Ohio 44107 www.ascension_lakewood.org August 2015 FROM FATHER VINCENT: On August 23 we will read from Ephesians including verse 18 from chapter 6 which states, Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. The Spirit of God unites us all in one Body of Christ, the Church. We are saints of God, redeemed and transformed by Christ, and connected with all the saints who have gone before us and all those who will come after us. The Spirit unites us in prayer, song, and sacraments with all the people of God. The Church of the Ascension is filled the Spirit in a special way this month. We celebrated with Dave and Sue Campion as they were married on August 1st and the breath of God echoed through brass instruments making lively music at the 10:30am service on August 2nd as we sent Lauren off with our prayers and love as she prepares to move to Hawaii. We are blessed to have Kelly with us preaching and teaching as she experiences parish life at Ascension before heading back to seminary for her third and final year. We will finish up our summer lunch program and are gathering supplies to support students our school partners. We are preparing to open our nursery on September 6th and every Sunday thereafter from 10:15-12:15 for children 0-4 years old and gearing up for Sunday school and youth group! On August 9th we will have one service at 10:30, an open lunch for all at noon, and a jazz concert from 1-2pm. We are feeding and being fed, making and enjoying music, playing and learning with children and adults of all ages. We are in the Spirit at all times it seems, living life as the Body of Christ, persevering in supplication for one another as we make community. News from Gil Newlands, Senior Warden: Senior Warden s Message O.K. Give me a break! It s O.K. to start the Stuff the Bus campaign for school supplies that one of the local TV stations is promoting, but to start advertising for Christmas Tree ornaments in July! That s a little much. I know the summer has sped by. Many people are already returning from their summer vacations, as families with school-age children are preparing for school start-up later this month. Here at Church of the Ascension plans are already underway for Sunday School start-up in September. For the first time in a number of years, we ll have not only a Sunday School but also a Nursery Room for pre-schoolers. We are still looking for volunteers to assist with the programs. If you re interested, please get in touch with either Fr. Vincent, Rita Rozell, or Margie Hildebrandt. For those of you who haven t been at church this summer, we ve been worshipping in a nice, cool, air-conditioned space, thanks to our new HVAC system. In the offices, Debbie and Fr. Vincent now have comfortable work spaces, thanks to the Air conditioning system. I feel we should also (again) thank Debbie Bethea at this point for her services as defacto parish secretary I think going on two years now. Debbie shows up every Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., to answer phones, take messages, open up for the AA groups, check in the lunches for the summer lunch program, and numerous other duties, and without her services we would not be able to continue many of our outreach programs. Debbie will be on vacation later this month and we still need one volunteer (on Fridays) to man her post. Please contact me if you are able to help. I m pleased to announce that we now have a fifth Twelve-Step group meeting in Strohm Hall, and the North Coast Men s Chorus has elected to renew their contract with us for practice space in the Undercroft. I m sure you will agree, it certainly is wonderful to be using all of our space again! Incidentally, the new windows in Ascension Hall will be installed later this month, providing the Messianic congregation with an even more comfortable worship space. Finally, I should mention that coming-up on the agenda is our annual Stewardship Campaign, which will be starting earlier this year. I m sure you all realize we need to start planning for the future, and once-again having a full-time priest here at Church of the Ascension. Sincerely, Gil Newlands Senior Warden

TIMES FOR SERVICES! Services are at 8:00 and 10:30 am unless noted Help us Grow! Be joyful in the Lord, All you lands; Serve the Lord with gladness, And come before his presence with a song. (Psalm 100) Now is the time for those who would like to join the choir to let Margie or Linda know. We will begin singing for services on September 6th, so we ll need to know the number of our singers to get organized. Come and join the fun!!!!! REMINDER: Next Service, Lunch & Concert Sunday, August 9th David Kasper and the Friendly Ghosts. Kasper & the Friendly Ghost started in the neighborhoods of Lakewood and Rocky River when a demand for Dixieland and New Orleans music was requested. I contacted 3 of the most ghostly characters I knew who like the bounce of the old street-beat, and we started to jam. This has continued for the past 6 years, and not a moment of it goes by without a thought of my grandfather, who used to play Pete Fountain records for me. The Friendly Ghost's and I love this musical tradition and are grateful to continue it. Davey Gravy Kasper, woodwinds (Saxophones, Clarinets, Flutes and EWI), has been privileged to play with the Temptations, Noel Gallagher, Al Martino, Guy Lombardo, Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra (Playing the role of "Jimmy Dorsey), Tito Puente Jr., Either Orchestra and has opened up for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Pancho Sanchez and Tony Bennett. Kasper grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland and received his degree in music from Cleveland State University in the summer of 2006. Active on the local music scene, Kasper enjoys teaching saxophone, clarinet and flute in Downtown Cleveland and the Suburbs. A journey man musician since his early teens, Kasper is involved playing with many groups in town regularly including: Revolution Brass Band, Velvet Voyage, Ernie Krivda and the Fat Tuesday Big Band, Eddie Brunswick and the Hot Rod Lincoln's and several creative projects created for events. Dave always looks forward to putting out new and original music! Keep posted for new releases at: DaveKasper.net!

Outreach at Ascension Community Meal The community meal this month will be on Thursday, August 13th. Our dessert will be ice cream. Let Margie know if you would be willing to bring a bag of ice cream cups! I will need 80 cups. Thanks. As we know, many hands make work light! Margie What a team we have!!!! Our summer lunch program continues to be a blessing to those who come. We have a family with 6 kids who have been daily visitors. We also have a family of 3 little boys whose dad had to be out of work due to an injury to his hand. Some skate boarding high school boys brighten our day frequently. One consistent thing about each client is their genuine appreciation for the food. They never forget to say THANK YOU as they leave. Warms one s heart!

< Hospitality Roster We give thanks every day for all the volunteers at Ascension! SPEAKING OF VOLUNTEERS: August Music This fall, we will be opening the Nursery for children who come to church ages 0 4 years. We are going to hire an adult to be there every Sunday. NEWadults LIST to COMING! What we will need are volunteer be the 2nd adult in the room. This policy is in Accordance with Safeguarding God's Children. It is necessary to have 1 person for each Sunday to commit to be in the nursery to help. That would mean the volunteers would only have 1 Sunday every month or so depending on the number of volunteers. This ministry is so important to all of us. It allows not only parents but the congregation to receive the word of God with a spirit filled, uninterrupted church service. Please prayerfully consider this request! If you choose to participate, please contact either Fr. Vincent, Rita or Margie to put your name in.

The second Monday of this month, August 10th, our "Ascension Night Out" dining group will meet at 6:00 at Carrabbas Italian Restaurant, 25054 Sperry Rd., Westlake, Ohio 44145. New Faces at Ascension Melissa grew up in Fairfield, OH (north of Cincinnati) and lived in the area until just recently. Bret grew up in Westlake, went to college in Toledo, and ended up taking a job in Cincinnati. It was while working there that he first met Melissa. She was an intern and they worked on projects together, becoming friends. However they didn't date until well after Melissa's internship. A couple years later they were both out with friends and randomly bumped into each other. Right about this time, Bret received a great job offer in Cleveland. Melissa encouraged him to take it, and now they are both here! A FOND FAREWELL TO LAUREN DOCKERY Best wishes, Lauren, on your new endeavor. A wonderful lady in a beautiful place with The Episcopal Service Corps in a camp! Sounds like this opportunity was made in heaven!!!! YOU. WILL. BE. MISSED.
