Presbyterian Connection MAY 2015 Volume 22 Issue 5 The Merry Month of May The popular saying and later (song) The Merry Month of May has its popular beginning with a love poem written by Thomas Dekker back in 1599. It was part of the play he wrote called The Shoemaker s Daughter. The first two lines with which we are most familiar are: O, the month of May, the merry month of May, So frolic, so gay, and so green, so green, so green! This is what came to my mind when thinking about our Golden Opportunity Days annual celebration. This year it is 3-19 May. This is an annual event that had its beginning in our church possibly as long as 16-18 years ago. It has been an exciting and uplifting adventure that we look forward to every Spring. This year the theme is Come to the Garden. The Garden, of course, is our Meditation Garden. It is so green, so green and blooming with flowers. The first day, May 3rd, we will be having an outdoor brunch following the worship service. At 2 p.m., we will be dedicating our Meditation Garden to the Lord. People from the church and community have already been enjoying it since we began serious work on its development last summer. The community is being invited to come for the dedication. Following the worship on April 12 th, when my sermon topic was The Road to Emmaus, in which I suggested that the meditation walkway could be a place to encounter the Lord while meditating and thinking about the Lord, some of our visitors walked the Garden. Betty Arron s granddaughter and husband, both Air Force captains, visiting from their assignment in Okinawa, thought it was beautiful. I m sure they wanted and had an experience with the Lord on their personal Emmaus Walk. About a month ago I met a lady at the Bull Shoals Food Pantry who told me that a friend pushes her in her wheelchair up to the Garden where she likes to sit in the swing and take in its beauty, calmness, and comfort. Begin the Merry, Merry month of May enjoying the activities of Golden Opportunity Days. Walk the Garden. Have a talk with Jesus there. Enjoy the Golden Opportunity of lunch out at Sean s Thursday with the group going there as part of our celebration. Let us always remember that through our faith in Jesus Christ every day can be a Golden Opportunity of encounter with Him. God bless! Fred 1

MISSION MINUTE MAY-2015 "Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear." Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa. Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Family Services strives to provide a compassionate and nurturing environment for children and youth between the ages of 8 to 21. With a dedicated staff of trained family teachers and professional counselors, we strive to fulfill our mission to share Christ s healing love with children, youth and families in crisis. Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Family Services accomplishes its mission through several programmatic ministries. These include long-term residential care for youth ages 8 to 21, an emergency shelter program for both boys and girls and a transitions program for boys and girls re-entering the community from youth detention. Vera Lloyd uses a teaching family model of childcare as the heart of the Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Family Services program. Youth are referred to Vera Lloyd through the Department of Human Services, courts, emergency shelters and by private professionals. Youth are frequently victims of physical or sexual abuse, neglect or abandonment. Eight boys or girls live with a couple, called family teachers, in one of five singlefamily homes on the Vera Lloyd campus in Monticello. Within a nurturing, structured, family-style environment, youth learn to modify their behavior in order to function well in the family, community and school. Spiritual development is an integral part of daily life at Vera Lloyd. From family prayer and devotions to weekly church attendance and Bible study, young people are guided toward a life of faith. Vera Lloyd s on-campus school has proven success in helping youth who are struggling academically to reach their appropriate grade level and/or to earn a GED. Vera Lloyd's Transitional Living Program is designed to help older youth aging out of care at Vera Lloyd, learn life skills and receive guidance and encouragement during their transition to adulthood. It is designed for males and females 18 to 21 who have been prior residents of Vera Lloyd. Submitted by the Mission Committee 6

Till We Speak Again Question: Millie, how was your vacation? Millie: Great, except for the long car trip and thank you for asking. Everywhere you go from here is a challenge and a chore. I went down south to visit my kids, grandkids, and to get a much needed break from the cold, icy weather. One nice day we went fishing. I love fishing as long as the fish are biting. I don t even have to catch any as long as there is some kind of action going on. After a full 8 hours of nothing, the next day we went shopping. I must say the stores were biting much better than the fish, and I spent way too much money on me, the kids, and the grandkids, even the dog. These were things we wanted but didn t really need. Vacations are also a time to relax and reflect. I came to realize two things: 1. If I had to make my living as a fisherman I d starve to death. 2. I m not a very good steward with my money. Back to the fishing, Jesus said to be fishers of men. I m not really good at that either. I ll have to either try harder or give up on reflective vacations. Shopping was fun, and I might have the plastic paid off before the items wear out or get lost. A better choice would have been to have visited the other side of town and given that money to the homeless shelter, the food pantry, or the battered woman s crisis center. That might have been a better lesson for the grandkids than shopping for wants. See what I mean about reflective vacations? Oh well it s a done deal now, live and learn you re never too old!! I do hope this has answered your question. Luv, Millie aka-meg Thought for the Day: : A nickel saved is a nickel earned, but it sure burns a hole in your pocket. 7

MAY PUZZLE 8

DAY OF PENTECOST When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine."but Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: `In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' BULL SHOALS FOOD PANTRY During the month of March, the Bull Shoals Food Pantry served a total of 385 persons from 163 households. (12) were new clients. Age groups as follows: 0-18 19-64 65+ 99 245 41 (24) of these served were Veterans. (23) Volunteers worked a total of 420 hours. 9

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN & MEN General Meeting of Presbyterian Women and Men April 14, 2015, Village Wheel Restaurant Our April breakfast meeting of PW&M was attended by 15 members, including first-time attenders Bob Wiles, Johnnie Fletcher, and Norm Hockley. Our hosts today were Linda Allensworth and Norma Taylor. Dr Fred Taylor opened our meeting with prayer and a blessing for our meal. Acting Moderator, Amy Johnson brought the meeting to order at 9:40 AM. Vicky Bair brought us a devotion. Announcements included our church's Golden Opportunity Days events for May 3 through 10, 2015. Norma Taylor reminded us of garden work at the Meditation Garden at church that she will be doing every Tuesday morning if weather permits and asks anyone to join her. The Mtn Home Presbyterian Church is holding a Garden Getaway Retreat for all area women on April 18 from 3 to 6 PM. Reports: Secretary, Amy Johnson, presented the March meeting minutes. There were no changes so they will be placed on file, and a copy will be posted on the PW&M bulletin board. She passed the host sign-up sheet one more time to fill needed slots for the June meeting. She also read a note from former PW member Mary Lou Guthrie. Irene shared verbally news from Mary Lou, as well as Dot Pitts and JoAnn Kahm. Treasurer, Mary Kerr read her March report. The beginning balance was $1062.18 with receipts totaling $135.50 to give us an ending balance on March 31 of $1197.68. This report will be placed on file and posted on the PW&M bulletin board. Missions: Past chairperson, Betty Aaron was pleased to announce that Linda Allensworth has agreed to serve as our 2015 Missions chairperson. Betty will give her any necessary training and give a job description to her. Thank you, Linda, for stepping into this valuable position. OLD BUSINESS: Jeni Sass has stepped up to chair the Baked Potato Bash fundraiser one last year. She has selected the date for October 24, 2015. She needs a co-chair who will be willing to take over her position for 2016. We are still waiting for a person to step up to chair the Ice Cream Social fundraiser, usually held in July. It is a vital part of our fund raising for the year. This can be anyone in our church. PW&M will honor our church secretary again this year. Mary Kerr has a gift card and greeting card for Christi Partee and will give it to her this month. We all signed the card today. It was announced at the March general meeting that we would stop handing out the minutes and treasurer's report at the meetings and instead post them on the PW&M bulletin board. Also, the minutes will be printed in the monthly Connection newsletter to replace the Moderator's article since we will have a different Acting Moderator each month. We encourage each member to read these reports and discuss any questions at the next meeting. Con t. 10

Con t from previous pg. PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN & MEN NEW BUSINESS: The No-Bake Bake Sale will be advertised from April 26 through June 7 in our church. Nothing to buy or bake. A donation is all we need. This is considered our third of three fundraisers for our year. The PW&M Team met to recommend to the general membership today a list of ministries we pledge to support with earning from our fundraisers this year. Betty Aaron made a motion to accept the recommendation and Steve Broskovak seconded the motion to support these ministries with these dollar amounts: Bull Shoals Food Pantry $300.00 Christmas Baskets 200.00 Flippin Schools Lunch Program 200.00 Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home 100.00 Baxter Day Service 100.00 Our Kids of Marion Co. 100.00 Our church? Total $1000.00 And to drop four formerly supported ministries which include: Haiti Edu. Fund, Mtn Home Christian Clinic, Food Bank of NCA Bridge Bash, and Kindness, Inc. After discussion the vote was unanimous to accept this recommendation with the exception of support for our church. The PW&M Team will address this again in their April 30 meeting to decide if it should be dropped or reduced. Any funds earned above the amounts allocated here will be used for emergency needs and may be channeled through our presbytery's Disaster Relief Fund. A final decision will be brought before the general membership at the May meeting. Another idea brought up by Pastor Fred was to have a poster letting partakers at our fundraisers know the list of ministries we support with their donations. Amy offered to make up such a poster. Irene Bere will locate a list of ministries that our coin tubs support and provide that at the May meeting. OTHER BUSINESS: Next General Meeting will be Tuesday, May 12, at 9:30 AM at the Village Wheel. Our next meeting's hosts will be Mary Kerr and Amy Johnson. Steve Broskovak will give the devotion. Acting Moderator for May: Irene Bere Closing prayer was given by Amy at approximately 11:10 AM. Respectfully submitted by Secretary, Amy Johnson 11

RECIPE FOR MAY French Onion Soup Casserole Why would you make plain old French onion soup when you can make French Onion Soup Casserole? This casserole recipe has all of the best components of traditional French onion soup, but the way it's made drastically improves its quality. Because it's baked in a casserole dish, the bread really soaks up the soup and becomes extremely flavorful. The cheese melts and browns in a perfect layer on top. Best of all, making the soup in a casserole dish makes it so much faster and easier than preparing individual servings. Serves: 6 Preparation Time: 10 min Cooking Time: 1 hr 30 min INGREDIENTS 3 medium sweet onions, sliced 3 tablespoons butter 4 cups beef broth 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Approximately 6-8 slices French bread, about 1/2-inch in thickness 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese DIRECTIONS Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Add onions and cover. Cook for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the beef broth and the Worcestershire sauce. Heat the broth mixture until it boils. Reduce heat to low. All to simmer, uncovered, for about 30 minutes. The broth will reduce. Pour onion and broth mixture into a greased casserole dish. Lightly toast the slices of bread. Place toasted bread in a single layer on top of onion/broth mixture. Cover bread with a thick layer of the shredded mozzarella and top with grated Parmesan. Bake, uncovered, in a 350 degree oven for 20 to 30 minutes, or until cheese is melted and brown on top. 12
