Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018
Anti-Life Rally at RI Statehouse I never in a thousand years thought I would see the day when a bishops name was projected onto the front of the Rhode Island statehouse espousing the taking of innocent unborn life. All the while, the rainbow colors of non-traditional marriage surrounds the dome. We live in strange times where civility and respect are out of fashion. There is a great disdain and increasingly overt penchant against opinions that inform the public square infused by revelation and concluded by reason. This past year, several legislators had introduced a bill called the Reproductive Care Act which sounds quite lovely but is nothing other than a local statewide Roe v. Wade, extremist abortion bill. This bill would have been far outside the mainstream position held by most Rhode Islanders and a severe attack on all unborn female and male children. We are grateful that the leadership did not let this bill go to the floor. The winds are getting stronger against life. The public square mistakenly is represented as freedom from religion not of religion. We do not seek a theocracy but merely human rights for all. A healthy Christian feminism is one that enables women s rights that in accord with human dignity and the common good. The women s rights movement has accomplished great things but some of late have re-branded women s rights to be trumping anti-unborn life. The mother and her womb are sacred places for us all and the measure of how we function as a society in how we treat the most vulnerable among us. This includes the poor, the immigrant, the elderly, sick and disabled and most especially the unborn. This July 4 th week gives us pause to reflect on what is a human right? What is human dignity? What is the genius of women? What is religious freedom? We need to maintain a spirit of respect and kindness. Those of us who follow Christ and want a truly just society will not be quiet as some wish to take the lives of innocent unborn children in the name of rights. I wonder if we could project on the front of the statehouse an ultrasound with the line, who will speak for me in this building? God bless America! Fr. Taillon

We can not support those we serve with out the generosity of our donors. Once again, thank you for your support. Obstacles The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today's scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are "[hard of face and obstinate of heart" (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a "thorn in the flesh" (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. T he Gospel tells us that "[he] was amazed at their lack of faith" (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). St. Catherine of Siena: If you are what you should be, you will set the whole world ablaze!
