G-d Warns & Disciplines 08 / 23 / 14 Deuteronomy 28:15-68 Larry Feldman We should follow and obey G-d because brings suffering and His judgment A. Moses gives Israel warnings A. Moses gives Israel warnings Deuteronomy 28:15 15 "But it shall come about, if you do not obey the L-rd your G-d, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes with which I charge you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you: Deuteronomy 28:16-19 16 "Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the country. 17 "Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. 18 "Cursed shall be the offspring of your body and the produce of your ground, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock. 19 "Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out. 1

B. Moses describes G-d s judgments B. Moses describes G-d s judgments Deuteronomy 28:20 20 "The L-rd will send upon you curses, confusion, and rebuke, in all you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have forsaken Me. Deuteronomy 28:21-24 21 "The L-rd will make the pestilence cling to you until He has consumed you from the land where you are entering to possess it. 22 "The L-rd will smite you with consumption and with fever and with inflammation and with fiery heat and with the sword and with blight and with mildew, and they will pursue you until you perish. Deuteronomy 28:21-24 23 "The heaven which is over your head shall be bronze, and the earth which is under you, iron. 24 "The L-rd will make the rain of your land powder and dust; from heaven it shall come down on you until you are destroyed. Deuteronomy 28:25, 26 25 "The L-rd shall cause you to be defeated before your enemies; you will go out one way against them, but you will flee seven ways before them 26 "Your carcasses will be food to all birds of the sky and to the beasts of the earth, and there will be no one to frighten them away. Deuteronomy 28:27-29 27 "The L-rd will smite you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors and with the scab and with the itch, from which you cannot be healed. 28 "The L-rd will smite you with madness and with blindness and with bewilderment of heart; 29 and you will grope at noon, as the blind man gropes in darkness, and you will not prosper in your ways; but you shall only be oppressed and robbed continually, with none to save you. 2

Proverbs 1:20, 22-33 20 Wisdom shouts in the street, she lifts her voice in the square; 22 "How long, O naive ones, will you love being simple-minded? And scoffers delight themselves in scoffing and fools hate knowledge? 23 "Turn to my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you. 24 "Because I called and you refused, I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention; Proverbs 1:20, 22-33 25 And you neglected all my counsel and did not want my reproof; 26 I will also laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your dread comes, 27 When your dread comes like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. 28 "Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but they will not find me, Proverbs 1:20, 22-33 29 Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the L-rd. 30 "They would not accept my counsel, they spurned all my reproof. 31 "So they shall eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices. 32 "For the waywardness of the naive will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them. 33 "But he who listens to me shall live securely and will be at ease from the dread of evil." Deuteronomy 28:35-37 35 "The L-rd will strike you on the knees and legs with sore boils, from which you cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head. 36 "The L-rd will bring you and your king, whom you set over you, to a nation which neither you nor your fathers have known, and there you shall serve other gods, wood and stone. 37 "You shall become a horror, a proverb, and a taunt among all the people where the L-rd drives you. Deuteronomy 28:38-40, 42-43 38 "You shall bring out much seed to the field but you will gather in little, for the locust will consume it. 39 "You shall plant and cultivate vineyards, but you will neither drink of the wine nor gather the grapes, for the worm will devour them. 40 "You shall have olive trees throughout your territory but you will not anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives will drop off. Deuteronomy 28:38-40, 42-43 42 "The cricket shall possess all your trees and the produce of your ground. 43 "The alien who is among you shall rise above you higher and higher, but you will go down lower and lower. 3

C. Moses tells reasons for punishment C. Moses tells reasons for punishment Deuteronomy 28:45, 47-48 45 "So all these curses shall come on you and pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you would not obey the L-rd your G-d by keeping His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you. Deuteronomy 28:45, 47-48 47 "Because you did not serve the L-rd your G-d with joy and a glad heart, for the abundance of all things; 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the L-rd will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in the lack of all things; and He will put an iron yoke on your neck until He has destroyed you. Deuteronomy 28:49-53 49 "The L-rd will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as the eagle swoops down, a nation whose language you shall not understand, 50 a nation of fierce countenance who will have no respect for the old, nor show favor to the young. Deuteronomy 28:49-53 51 "Moreover, it shall eat the offspring of your herd and the produce of your ground until you are destroyed, who also leaves you no grain, new wine, or oil, nor the increase of your herd or the young of your flock until they have caused you to perish. Deuteronomy 28:49-53 52 "It shall besiege you in all your towns until your high and fortified walls in which you trusted come down throughout your land, and it shall besiege you in all your towns throughout your land which the L-rd your G-d has given you. 53 "Then you shall eat the offspring of your own body, the flesh of your sons and of your daughters whom the L-rd your G-d has given you 4

D. Moses concludes with the results of sin Deuteronomy 28:58-59 58 "If you are not careful to observe all the words of this law which are written in this book, to fear this honored and awesome name, the L-rd your G-d, 59 then the L-rd will bring extraordinary plagues on you and your descendants, even severe and lasting plagues, and miserable and chronic sicknesses. Deuteronomy 28:62, 64-66 62 "Then you shall be left few in number, whereas you were as numerous as the stars of heaven, because you did not obey the L-rd your G-d. 64 "Moreover, the L-rd will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth; and there you shall serve other gods, wood and stone, which you or your fathers have not known. Deuteronomy 28:62, 64-66 65 "Among those nations you shall find no rest, and there will be no resting place for the sole of your foot; but there the L-rd will give you a trembling heart, failing of eyes, and despair of soul. 66 "So your life shall hang in doubt before you; and you will be in dread night and day, and shall have no assurance of your life. II. In love G-d warns His people of turning from Him II. In love G-d warns His people of turning from Him A. We will experience suffering in the world 5

1 John 2:15-17 15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of G-d lives forever. Ecclesiastes 1:1-2, 14, 16-18 1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. 2 "Vanity of vanities," says the Preacher, "Vanity of vanities! All is vanity. 14 I have seen all the works which have been done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and striving after wind. Ecclesiastes 1:1-2, 14, 16-18 16 I said to myself, "Behold, I have magnified and increased wisdom more than all who were over Jerusalem before me; and my mind has observed a wealth of wisdom and knowledge. 17 And I set my mind to know wisdom and to know madness and folly; I realized that this also is striving after wind. 18 Because in much wisdom there is much grief, and increasing knowledge results in increasing pain. Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 1 I said to myself, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure. So enjoy yourself." And behold, it too was futility. 2 I said of laughter, "It is madness," and of pleasure, "What does it accomplish? 3 I explored with my mind how to stimulate my body with wine while my mind was guiding me wisely, and how to take hold of folly, until I could see what good there is for the sons of men to do under heaven the few years of their lives. Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 4 I enlarged my works: I built houses for myself, I planted vineyards for myself; 5 I made gardens and parks for myself and I planted in them all kinds of fruit trees; 6 I made ponds of water for myself from which to irrigate a forest of growing trees. 7 I bought male and female slaves and I had homeborn slaves also I possessed flocks and herds larger than all who preceded me in Jerusalem. Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 8 Also, I collected for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I provided for myself male and female singers and the pleasures of men -many concubines. 9 Then I became great and increased more than all who preceded me in Jerusalem. My wisdom also stood by me. 6

Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 10 All that my eyes desired I did not refuse them I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure, for my heart was pleased because of all my labor and this was my reward for all my labor. 11 Thus I considered all my activities which my hands had done and the labor which I had exerted, and behold all was vanity and striving after wind and there was no profit under the sun. Ecclesiastes 5:10-11 10 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves abundance with its income. This too is vanity. 11 When good things increase, those who consume them increase. So what is the advantage to their owners except to look on? Ecclesiastes 6:7 7 All a man's labor is for his mouth and yet the appetite is not satisfied. Ecclesiastes 7:29 29 "Behold, I have found only this, that G-d made men upright, but they have sought out many devices." Ecclesiastes 12:7-10, 13-14 7 then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to G-d who gave it. 8 "Vanity of vanities," says the Preacher, "all is vanity! 9 In addition to being a wise man, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge; and he pondered, searched out and arranged many proverbs. 10 The Preacher sought to find delightful words and to write words of truth correctly. Ecclesiastes 12:7-10, 13-14 13 The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear G-d and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. 14 For G-d will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil. 7

II. In love G-d warns His people of turning from Him B. We will receive G-d s discipline 1 Corinthians 5:3-5 3 For I, on my part, though absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present. 4 In the name of our L-rd Yeshua, when you are assembled, and I with you in spirit, with the power of our L-rd Yeshua, 5 I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh Hebrews 3:7-13, 18-19 7 Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, "TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, 8 DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS AS WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME, AS IN THE DAY OF TRIAL IN THE WILDERNESS, 9 WHERE YOUR FATHERS TRIED ME BY TESTING ME, AND SAW MY WORKS FOR FORTY YEARS. Hebrews 3:7-13, 18-19 10 "THEREFORE I WAS ANGRY WITH THIS GENERATION, AND SAID, 'THEY ALWAYS GO ASTRAY IN THEIR HEART, AND THEY DID NOT KNOW MY WAYS ; 11 AS I SWORE IN MY WRATH, 'THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST. 12 Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living G-d. Hebrews 3:7-13, 18-19 13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 18 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief. Hebrews 4:6, 11 6 Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly had good news preached to them failed to enter because of, 11 Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of. 8

Hebrews 6:4-6, 8 4 For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of G-d and the powers of the age to come, Hebrews 6:4-6, 8 6 and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of G-d and put Him to open shame. 8 but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned. Hebrews 10:26-29, 31 26 For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a terrifying expectation of judgment and THE FURY OF A FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES. 28 Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Hebrews 10:26-29, 31 29 How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of G-d, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? 31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living G-d. Hebrews 12:5-7, 9-13 5 and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, "MY SON, DO NOT REGARD LIGHTLY THE DISCIPLINE OF THE L-RD, NOR FAINT WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED BY HIM; 6 FOR THOSE WHOM THE L-RD LOVES HE DISCIPLINES, AND HE SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES. Hebrews 12:5-7, 9-13 7 It is for discipline that you endure; G-d deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 9 new word. 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. 9

Hebrews 12:5-7, 9-13 11 All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. 12 Therefore, strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that the limb which is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed. 1 Samuel 2:30 30 "Therefore the L-rd G-d of Israel declares, 'I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father should walk before Me forever'; but now the L-rd declares, 'Far be it from Me-- for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me will be lightly esteemed. 2 Chronicles 15:2 2 and he went out to meet Asa and said to him, "Listen to me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: the L-rd is with you when you are with Him and if you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you. We should follow and obey G-d because brings suffering and His judgment 10
