THE TOWER June 25, 2017 T M S H J The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

HEART TO HEART pastor to parish What is so rare as a day in June? The, if ever, come perfect days; Then Heaven tries the earth if it be in tune, And over it so ly her warm ear lays. Retreat Way back at the end of April (oh where does the me go?), I went on retreat to my favorite spot: St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, PA. It s the largest Benedic ne monastery in the world and I very much enjoy praying with the monks three mes daily. (in James Russell Lowell, prelude to part 1, The Vision of Sir Launfal, 1848). It s near Shanksville, where the Flight 93 Na onal Memorial is located. I had visited the site when there was nothing there except a chain link fence on which people placed homemade memorials and tributes. At the me, I became a founding member (like many others) who have helped fund the construc on of the permanent memorial to the heroes of Flight 93. On my recent retreat I was able to make the drive over to Shanksville and see what has been built there. It is truly moving, a wonderful tribute to the genuinely heroic efforts of the passengers and flight crew to prevent Flight 93 from becoming a weapon in the hands of terrorists. If you ever get a chance to visit this na onal memorial, I urge you to do so. And while you are at it, drive the 45 minutes or so to Latrobe and visit the Benedic ne monks and spend some me walking their grounds or in prayer in their basilica church. Summer Here s a nice summer- me quote I found. Something for you to ponder, if you will.

Hearts Alive in Worship My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS On Friday, June 23rd, the Church celebrated the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We at Sacred Heart like to celebrate this solemnity on a Sunday, when all of our parishioners can be here. We joyfully celebrate Christ s redeeming and merciful love for the human race. In the gospel we learn the character and movement of Jesus Most Sacred Heart, of his most loving heart. He praises the Father, knows the Father, reveals the Father all with a meek and humble heart. He offers us rest, learning, an easy yoke, a light burden all with a meek and humble heart. And from the other readings we learn even more about the character and movement of Jesus Most Sacred Heart: chosen, loved, faithful, kind, forgiving, compassionate, merciful, gracious all with a meek and humble heart. Such must be our heart, meek and humble like his, wide open toward God and each other. Our heart must be wide open to love as Jesus did without reserve. (Living Liturgy from Liturgical Press 2017) The devo on to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is rooted in this kind of uncondi onal love. The devo on to the Sacred Heart of Jesus has a long history. Since the year 800, Jesus heart has been used as a symbol on which to focus one s private devo on to his humanity and the (five) wounds he suffered during crucifixion. Other devo ons to the Sacred Heart of Jesus were established over the centuries by various historical figures in our Church including St. Bonaventure (1221-1274), St. Gertrude (1256-1302), St. Catherine of Sienna (1347-1380), and St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622). The first feast of the Sacred Heart was celebrated on August 31, 1670, in Rennes, France, through the efforts of (Saint) Fr. Jean Eudes (1601-1680). From Rennes, the devo on spread, but it took the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690) for the devo on to become universal. St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visita on nun, experienced a series of visions of Christ as she prayed before the Blessed Sacrament. During these visions, Christ pointed to his Heart, as the symbol of his love and mercy. Christ promised Margaret Mary that, in response to those who devoted themselves to his Sacred Heart, he would: establish peace in their homes; comfort them in mes of trouble; bestow abundant blessings upon them; be an infinite source of mercy for sinners; and bless every place in which an image of His Heart was displayed and honored. Some of the devo onal prac ces include: 1) receiving Communion frequently; 2) going to Confession and receiving the Eucharist on the First Friday of the month; 3) par cipa ng in Eucharis c Adora on; and 4) celebra ng the Feast of the Sacred Heart. The devo on became popular a er St. Margaret Mary s death in 1690, but, because the Church ini ally had doubts about the validity of the visions, the feast was not celebrated officially in France un l 1765. Almost 100 years later, in 1856, Pope Pius IX, at the request of the French bishops, extended the feast to the universal Church. It is celebrated on the day requested by Christ the Friday a er Corpus Chris, or 19 days a er Pentecost Sunday. Finally, Pope Pius XII issued an encyclical in 1956 on the Sacred Heart, which can be found on the Va can website under Pope Pius XII. Here at Sacred Heart, we can celebrate our feast day by being more loving, more forgiving, more merciful and more humble. We can try to be more like Christ. We can put on the heart of Jesus, a heart that burst with life for all those he encountered. (Living Liturgy, Liturgical Press 2017) Now that is something to celebrate!

Hearts Alive in Worship My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP AT SACRED HEART Food for Thought from Scripture: Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. MATTHEW 10:32 Do you share your Catholic faith with others? Do you defend your Catholic faith or do you remain silent when the situa on arises? Do you pray in public before meals? Pray for the strength and courage to be a joyful witness of our Catholic faith when the opportunity presents itself. SCRIPTURE REFLECTION Come & Experience the Living Word WEEKLY SCRIPTURE REFLECTION GROUP Consider joining us! Our scripture reflec on group meets Monday mornings a er the 8:30 a.m. Mass in the Fireplace Room. We gather to read and reflect on the coming Sunday readings. No experience in scripture necessary! All are welcome and encouraged to join. It s a great way to ponder the word of God during the week, and hear the perspec ve of other parishioners! JOIN US! NOTE: NO GATHERING JULY 3RD RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY Join our Respect Life Ministry in our weekly prayer for life: That God, who rescues the life of the helpless, may enable us to rescue children from abor on, the sick from euthanasia, the criminal from capital punishment, and the poor from starva on. We pray to the Lord! COME SEE US! Are you someone, or do you know someone, that doesn t come to Church anymore or all that o en? Do you, or do they, feel disconnected? Not sure where the Church fits into your life? Miss receiving the Eucharist? Miss that feeling of community? Our rela onship with Christ needs care and a en on, just like any rela onship in our life. We have to work at it, nurture it, be a en ve to it. A ending Mass, listening to God s word, absorbing the living Christ into our being and si ng in quiet prayer all help to nurture that rela onship with Christ. We realize it can be in mida ng to walk back through those doors, but we encourage you to try it. We encourage our regular a endees to extend a personal invita on to someone who has been away for a while to come back to Mass with you some Sunday...or to a end an event at the Parish with you. The personal invita on is key, as is your offer of friendship and company. Your invita on is Christ s invita on. The welcome we extend as a parish is key as well. We ll do our best to welcome you. We ll be happy to answer ques ons, even the tough ones you might have. We encourage all of our parishioners to greet each other with open hands and hearts. You might not realize that someone si ng next to you at Mass has been away for a long me. Be the face and hands of Christ to that person. Welcome them home. Welcome them to our faith community. Welcome them to Sacred Heart! You can make a difference. Dare to be a Disciple! For I long to see you, that I may share with you some spiritual gi so that you may be strengthened, that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by one another s faith, yours and mine.
