The Manse Guthrie August 2014 Dear Friends I hope that you have had a good summer and have been able to enjoy the sunshine, although I know that the last few months have been a sad time or many families in our parishes. August has seen us remember the beginning of the First World War and we marked this anniversary ourselves with a special service at Guthrie on the 3 rd August. It has been a time to remember the courage, devotion to duty and personal sacrifice of many from our parishes and beyond. It should, however, also be a time for us to remember those who serve today in our armed forces, the police and fire and ambulance services. They too show the same qualities of those we have been thinking about. When I was a young minister, Remembrance Sunday was one of the best attended Church services of the year. It would be nice to think that this year more people would make the effort to take the opportunity to remember and to give thanks for the freedom so dearly bought that we enjoy. God bless you all Brian

GUTHRIE HALL July has been a glorious month. Unfortunately the hall BBQ held on 29 th June was not a glorious day, however, it did not put off a good crowd from turning up and eating a great feast of food inside out of the rain. Thank you to all intrepid adventurers for supporting this event. Our next fund raiser is the annual craft fair. This will be from 12.00pm to 4.00pm on the 25 th and 26 th October. As most of you know this is a big event for both the hall and church and takes a lot of hard work and organisation by many. There will be a second hand book stall again this year. Approximately 250 books were sold last year so let s see if we can beat that and all money raised will be split between the church and hall funds. Any donations of books would be most gratefully received and can be given to any committee member. We look forward to seeing you. Steven Carcary Scottish dancing evenings every second and fourth Wednesday of each month. 7.45pm to around 10.00pm. All welcome. For more details contact Steven on 079520 26633. The Men s Club every Tuesday evening. All welcome. Contact Neil Ross 01241 828323 for information. Aldbar WRI hold their meetings in the hall and would welcome new members. Contact Mrs Allan for more information on 01307 830246. Angus Embroiderer and Textile Artists now hold their meetings regularly at the hall please phone Pat Beaton on 01241 828092 for more details. Guthrie Hall is available for private hire very modest rates which have remained static for many years. A superb venue with first class facilities. Please telephone Christine Shand on 01307 819473.. Event for 2014 Craft Fair 25 th and 26 th October 12.00 pm-16.00pm both days Family Dance 12 th December bring your own food and drinks. Children are welcome so no need for baby sitters! We were hoping to hold a musical evening with Steven Carcary during the winter however, this has been postponed until 2015.

ABERLEMNO CHURCH TREASURER S REPORT Having been asked to take on the role of Treasurer for Aberlemno Church, I duly accepted and will carry out my duties to the best of my ability. Good news regarding our fund raising efforts Our annual coffee morning was held on 12 th April in the Guide Hall in Forfar and raised a total of 927. Thanks go to everyone involved for all their hard work. On 7 th June a 6 mile walk took place in Edzell area, through the Blue Door and up to the Rocks of Solitude. About 30 of us thoroughly enjoyed the day. The amount raised was 885. On 22 nd June we had our Strawberry walk which is always enjoyable. As the Proclaimers say And I would walk 500 miles! especially when one of Helen s strawberry tarts were there to greet me. We have to thank Lyall and Helen for their hospitality and the lovely setting in their garden. The afternoon raised 300. On 3 rd August we had a successful Duck Race within the grounds of Melgund Castle. We were blessed with the weather as the rain showers were skirting the area. Again it was a very enjoyable afternoon and raised 881. Thank you to Mr and Mrs Gregory and to everyone who helped on the day. As we all know, fund raising is an essential part to enhance the strength of the finances in our Church and I think the above shows the support and generosity of our congregation, our families and our friends. Lorna Hooghiemstra Treasurer August 2014

GUTHRIE & RESCOBIE CHURCH TREASURER S REPORT It is always difficult in August to predict where we will be at the end of the year. However, the figures so far look promising. The Walk this year, thanks to the weather, proved a financial success realising 1,187. Well done to all who took part and helped to raise funds for the Church. We have also been fortunate in that we can now claim tax back on Open Plate collections which has boosted the Inland Revenue Recovery by 1,400. However, it is the special events that help us over the line. Please do come up with ideas that might assist. James Osborne Treasurer August 2014 Hi Folks GUTHRIE & RESCOBIE GUILD It is that time of year again. The Church Guild starts on Tuesday 9 th September at 7.30pm in the Church hall. Hot chocolate is the topic (helping young people in Dundee). 14 th October Craig Paterson from Angus Archives at 7.30pm 11 th November A talk on Remembrance 19th November Afternoon tea in village hall 7 th December Christmas music in Guthrie Church Everyone is most welcome to any of these meetings. All those who willingly support the guild by taking a sunshine bag every year, can hand them to any Guild member on or before the Harvest Thanksgiving on 19 th October or at the Communion on 2 nd November. With the lovely summer we have had I am sure they will be as full as ever. Other dates for your diary Craft Fare on 25 th October- Anyone willing to help on the Church stall please contact Brian Ramsay or Joyce Smith. Donations for the stall can be handed in on Saturday morning at the hall. Guild week afternoon tea at 2.00pm on 19 th November in the village hall. Christmas Music in Guthrie Church at 2.00pm on 7 th December. Look forward to seeing you and thank you for your support. Joyce Smith

Aberlemno Hall Committee The Hall Committee were delighted with the response to The Stories in the Stones both in terms of numbers and the people who turned up to help many thanks. We will now review what did and didn t work with a view to developing the idea of events based on our history and surroundings. We have had offers of support and there are a number of possible speakers we hope to get involved. A number of other ideas were also suggested slimming class, book exchange, pilates etc. so we will look to get some taster classes underway. The hall is there to meet the needs and wants of the whole community so if you want to try something, join the Committee or just suggest any ideas you can contact us via the Aberlemno website at www.aberlemno.org. We hope to organise some events over the autumn so watch the hall notice board and we will be reassessing our plans for the hall. The disappointment at finding we were not eligible for the Big Lottery fund does not mean we can t make progress so we will look at funding for a feasibility study to review how to take the hall forward as a community asset. Once again thanks for your support with our new venture. A Poem A wee man sits in the corner o oor herts, Wae a pencil in his haun He sits and watches and listens tae aw that s going on. He awards us points for the guid we dae and for ony badness taks points away. Nothing fae him is a secret, fae him ye cannie hide, Whether it s in a hovel or mansion ye bide Even oor deepest thoughts tae him are as clear as day. The man who sees inside oor herts is never far away. He watches parents, how they behave, in the hoose and outside tae. They re building the character and standing of their offspring on life s way. They re constructing the family s highway, by the type of life they ve led The make life a hill, a steepish climb or a gentle path to tread. So gather your points as you journey through life Remember we reap as we sow, Be honest and truthful, avoid any strife And you ll find contentment wherever you go. At the end of the day we ll meet the wee man, We ll be welcomed wae open embrace, For the effort we ve made, while treading this earth, We re assured of a heavenly place. By Daniel
