HELP WANTED We are looking to fill the position of Caretaker for our church with an anticipated start date in early December. If you know of anyone who is interested in the position, please contact Paul Sikoryak - 908-534-2685. Please pass the word around. The Compensation for the Caretaker Position would include the apartment in the church, all utilities paid (except phone), and a small monthly salary. SAINT HILARION Saint Hilarion the Great was born in 292 AD at Tabatha, a town near Gaza in Palestine. While he was raised in a pagan family, he converted to Christianity and was baptized after studying in Alexandria. While in Alexandria, St. Hilarion found himself drawn to the assemblies of Christians who met often to worship. These people became his friends and his guides in the spiritual life, particularly, the famous monk, St. Anthony the Great who made his home in the forbidding Egyptian desert and lived a wonderfully simple, prayerful life there. St. Hilarion became a disciple of St. Anthony the Great. When his parents died, he returned to Gaza and sold all of his inheritance, distributing all of his wealth to the poor. He then departed for the desert of Palestine, devoting himself entirely to prayer and fasting. He fasted daily, reportedly only eating 15 figs a day, lived in a hut made of reeds and practiced unceasing prayer. Over the years he became a healer, a counselor, and God rewarded his spiritual efforts and bestowed upon him the grace to perform miracles. His fame spread. He founded monasteries all over Palestine and eventually settled in Cyprus. St. Hilarion departed from this world in 372 AD at age of 80.

NEW IDEA FOR COFFEE HOURS A COFFEE HOUR NETWORK Coffee hours are an important part of our Sunday at St. Nicholas. The task to prepare, serve and cleanup has often fallen on a few. Starting mid-november, we are hoping to replace this small, and tired committee with a whole network of people to help host coffee hours. The idea is to create teams made up of one or more families with each team comprised of a Team Captain and 4 to 5 additional members. Teams are being formed now. Would you like to be on a team? See Debbie Derevjanik, Helenka Tymus or Kim Busel. Our new goal is eight teams! Thank you to all who have signed up already. And men you are invited to join the teams as well. We have a few daring men that have volunteered already. Why not form your own team! And thanks to Mike Kelcho who, as chief coffee maker of the church, is a member of all of the teams. COSTUME PARTY LAST WEEK St. Nicholas has a policy not to show pictures of our children on the web. SOBOR News Please visit www.acrod.org for videos and a photo gallery from the SOBOR last week in Johnstown. Of particular interest is the hour+ video of His Grace, Bishop Gregory of Nyssa s opening remarks. It includes the past, present and future vision of the Carpatho-Russian Diocese. Topics include old calendar versus new calendar opinions, creating a unified Orthodox, the needs of the Diocese including priests, a new Library/Learning Center, new housing buildings at Camp Nazareth and the Seminary, and a vision for the youth of the diocese. Diocese News: PROTOPRESBYTER FRANK P. MILORO CELEBRATES FINAL LITURGY AS DEAN OF CHRIST THE SAVIOR CATHEDRAL JOHNSTOWN, PA -- In the presence of His Grace, Bishop Gregory and a large number of Cathedral faithful, family members and friends, the Very Rev. Protopresbyter Frank P. Miloro, celebrated his final Liturgy as Cathedral Dean on Sunday, October 27, 2013. While retiring from active parish ministry, Fr. Miloro, at the request of His Grace, Bishop Gregory will continue to serve the Diocese as Chancellor and Dean of Christ the Saviour Seminary for the forseeable future. Our house is already filled with Christmas Santa Claus figurines are scattered about, cookie ingredients are piling up on tables, banners are being unfolded and inspected and all eyes are focused on the tasks at hand to get 30,000 cookies baked by December 14 th. Select your favorites from our Christmas Cookie Wonderland 50+ varieties of homemade goodies INGREDIENTS I have been asked by several people how many pounds of ingredients it takes to make as many cookies as we do. When you are lugging it, I can tell you that it feels like tons, but I would guess the number would be around 1200 pounds. To see the amount, take a look in the Choir room, starting today. The will be storing ingredients to keep the kitchen free for production. A small team has been out buying ingredients armed with coupons. We pounce as soon as there is deal. If you are planning on being at church on those Sundays, bring some work clothes and join right in while drinking your coffee. With the new freezer, we will be taking your work and freezing the prepared dough until baking. BAKING AT HOME Last year, we were blessed with an AMAZING group of women and men who volunteered to bake cookies at home. And, we ask a lot - 500-600 cookies. For many, it is much easier to bake at home than to have to come to the church, find parking and drive home. On the Volunteer Board, there is a sign-up sheet to be a member of the elite bake-at-home team. We will give you the ingredients and containers to bring the cookies back to us. These cookies are so appreciated and take tremendous pressure off from the three marathon baking days. THREE MARATHON BAKING DAYS Yes it is going to be another campout at the church starting on Tuesday evening through Friday, December 13th. There are bakers working during the day and in the evening and you are welcome to join us at any point during the day. It s hard work, no doubt, but there is a great sense of accomplishment seeing thousands of cookies cooling on racks. It is okay if you are not a baker. There are many tasks to be done during those days. Please sign-up on the Volunteer Board to let us know you are coming. The more hands, the more cookies are done. It is an experience to see this much production in such a short time. The Volunteer Board is filled opportunities to help with the. All ages are welcome we can find fun activities for everyone. DECEMBER 14-15th If you have never seen the in action, promise yourself that you will this year. It is FUN. The smiles of the people who come to the event are genuine. Although I will probably jinx it by saying this, we have never had one complaint only compliments. There are a cast of characters that visit the Cookie Walk each year which will be even more punctuated by the fact that it is SANTACON 2013 on Saturday. There will be literally thousands of Santas and their reindeer/elves on the streets of the East Village. It makes for a very colorful day, to say the least. From what I understand, we are going to have a contingency of Cookie Monsters join us again. Believe me, for two days, you say to yourself only in New York. 40 Days COUNTDOWN We need volunteers on Saturday and Sunday although the best day for people watching is definitely on Saturday. We know it is a busy time of year, but you will enjoy yourself. Please volunteer to help one or both days! As for God, His way is perfect; The Word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. Psalm 18:30 A king who did not believe in the goodness of God, had a slave who, in all circumstances would always say My king, do not be discouraged, because as for God, His way is perfect. He makes no mistakes! One day they went hunting and along the way a wild animal attacked the king. His slave managed to kill the animal, but could not prevent his majesty from losing a finger. Furious and without showing his gratitude for being saved, the nobleman asked "Is God good? If He was good, I would not have been attacked and lost my finger." The slave replied:"my king, despite all these things, I can only tell you that God is good, and he knows why these things happened. As for God, His way is perfect. He makes no mistakes! Outraged by the response, the king ordered the arrest of his slave. Later, the King left for another hunt, this time alone. He was captured by savages who engaged in human sacrifices. On the altar and ready to sacrifice the nobleman, the savages discovered that their victim did not have one of his fingers. According to them, only a whole person with all his/her parts intact could be offered to the gods. The King without a finger was deemed an abominable sacrifice for their gods. So they released the King. Upon his return to the palace, the King authorized the release of his slave. He received the slave affectionately. God was really good to me! I was almost killed by the wild men, but for lack of a single finger, I was let go! But I have a question: if God is so good, why did he allow me to put you in jail?" The slave answered, "My King, if I had gone with you on this hunt, I would have been sacrificed instead because I have no missing finger. Remember everything God does is perfect. He is never wrong. He made you keep me in jail so I would not be with you on the hunt." Often we complain about life, and negative things that happen to us, forgetting that nothing is random and that everything has a purpose. Every morning, offer your day to God. Don't be in a rush. Ask God to inspire your thoughts, guide your actions, and ease your feelings. And do not be afraid. He is a shield to all who trust in Him. As for God, His way is perfect; The Word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.
