1 Sunday, May 20, 2018 - Pentecost Sunday PENTECOST...THE FEAST OF THE SPIRIT AND THE BIRTHDAY OF THE CHURCH: In this feast, we celebrate the beginnings and the birthday of the Church. The physical body of Christ was conceived and began to grow in the womb of the Virgin Mary when the Spirit came upon her at the Annunciation. On Pentecost, the Spirit came upon the Apostles for the first time and upon Mary with them for the second time to form the new Body of Christ among the small community of His followers. The gift of Pentecost through our Baptism and Confirmation makes us the Body of Christ a community driven, empowered and guided by God s Spirit. Jesus told His initial group I will not leave you orphans, I will send you the paraclete who will teach you all things. We are the adopted sons and daughters of God, adopted into this wonderful new reality the Body of Christ, the Church a community enlivened, empowered and guided by the Spirit of Pentecost. The following prayer is a Catholic traditional prayer to the Spirit. Individuals and families are encouraged to find time to pray this prayer quietly: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful - And enkindle in them the fire of Your love - Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created - And you shall renew the face of the earth. Amen. OMOS CHURCH DEDICATION ANNIVERSARY: Our present Church which I still find myself calling the new Church, was dedicated on Pentecost Sunday, May 26, 1985. This Sunday, Pentecost Sunday is the birthday of our Universal Church as well as the 33rd Anniversary of the dedication of our Parish Church where God dwells among His people. There have been many, many wonderful celebrations of our faith in this new Church over this past thirty-three years. All the Sacraments except for the Sacrament of Ordination to the Priesthood have been celebrated here. There have been an endless series of weddings, funerals, Quinceñeras (15th birthday celebrations), the Seven Stations of Mary, Rosary rallies, May Crownings, Scripture/Communion services, 40 Hours of Devotion and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, benediction and special anniversary celebrations. The annual cycle of Baptisms, Confirmations and First Communions are always special gatherings and blessed times within the Church. Our church (the building) is truly a holy ground place where we come to offer the gift of our lives to God and where God offers the gift of Himself to us. BACK TO BEGINNINGS: All our parish liturgical services are now being celebrated in the original church space of the parish, now the parish hall. The parish hall was the original church space of the parish for 27 years. The current church space which has been in service for worship for 33 years is undergoing remodeling. Thanks to all of our parishioners for your patience and understanding during this relocation to the parish hall for all our liturgical functions. What remains consistent during this time of transition is our coming together through God s presence with us in the Mass...in Word, community, and Sacrament, calling us and leading us to loving service. Whenever God s people come together in His name, Jesus assures us there I am in your midst. It is our hope that the remodel within the church space will be concluded by the middle of August. The initial phase of the remodel is progressing according to plan. Let s pray that it will continue to progress favorably on the time schedule that has been set forth. PETITIONS FOR LOURDES: I will be leaving the last days of June to do two weeks of ministry in Lourdes again this year as an integral part of my vacation time. I would be happy to bring personal petitions on behalf of Parishioners to the shrine. Petition forms on which you may list your petitions are available in front of the icon of Mary in the Church. Please complete your petition forms and return them to the church no later than Sunday, June 24th. ABSOLUTELY NO ACCESS TO CHURCH BUILDING DURING REMODEL: The church is now fenced off as the renewal projects commence within it this week. The subcontractors participating in the construction management committee meeting this past Tuesday morning were emphatic in asking assurances from the parish of totally restricting parishioners access to the church space during the remodel projects. Our Sunday Bulletin will have a weekly progress report. This week, all the pews and flooring will be removed and remodel in the restrooms will commence. PRIESTS TRANSITIONS: Fr. Richard Awange will be taking up his new assignment in pastoral ministry at St. Margaret s parish in Tucson on August 1 st. The parish is most grateful to Fr. Richard for his very generous spirit of service and ministry during these past two years. He has been very available for a wide range of priestly ministries during this period of time. The parish will host a bon voyage reception for Fr. Richard after the 9am Mass on July 29 th. Deacon Thomas Quirk will be ordained to the priesthood at the Cathedral at 10am on June 2 nd. Parishioners who have never experienced the beautiful ritual of an Ordination Mass and who may have a desire to participate are encouraged to do so. Fr. Quirk will be taking up his first priestly assignment with us here at Our Mother of Sorrows on the first week of July. Many thanks for Fr. Richard s presence in ministry here at Our Mother of Sorrows and prayers for Fr. Quirk s first priestly assignment in ministry.

EUCHARISTIC ADORERS SPACE RELOCATED: The door to the space in the southwestern corner of the parish hall has a handicap ramp and is secured at all times by a keypad on the door. The combination of the keypad is available to Eucharistic Adorers through the parish office. I am hopeful that the relocation of the exposition space during this period of time will not change the weekly practice of adorers in the presence of the exposed Sacrament. Let s continue to draw close to the Lord during exposition times and be joyful in His companionship. 2 Scripture Reflection May 20, 2018 - Pentecost Sunday John 20:19-23 A 50-day celebration of Easter follows the 40 days of Lent. Most Catholics probably do better at keeping Lent than celebrating Easter. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days we feel guilty about not observing in some way. However, the Church celebrates Easter longer and with greater enthusiasm than Lent. Easter celebrates the central mystery of our faith: Jesus resurrection from the dead. The Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday evening inaugurates 50 days of joy that culminate on Pentecost when Christians celebrate Jesus sending of the Holy Spirit on His followers. During this season we read from Jesus farewell to His disciples in John s Gospel, chapters that explore our continuing relationship with the Risen Jesus, His Father, and Spirit. The Church father Athanasius refers to these 50 days of Easter joy as the Great Sunday. The joy of the Risen Jesus continuing presence and the Spirit s coming affected how early Christians prayed. The Pentecost Scriptures envision a transformation of the world in Christ by a community whose members are always in need of transformation themselves. The Spirit provides the gifts for renewing the face of the earth. ***How have you experienced coming to life again and finding joy this Easter season? Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. Kindle in us the fire of your love. DID YOU KNOW... Regarding sacred images and art, the mind of the early Christians was clearly a Catholic mind with the treasury of paintings depicting scenes from the lives of Christ, Mary, the Apostles and other persons of the Old and new Testaments found throughout the Catacombs.
