RENEWAL m i n i s t r i e s Proclaiming Jesus through Catholic Renewal and Evangelization January 2018 Dear Partners in the Journey, A letter from Ralph Martin INSIDE THIS ISSUE Words of Thanks Page 3 A Survival Plan for 2018 & Beyond Page 4 Mission to Haiti Page 6 On the Road Page 8 I m writing this while flying over the far eastern provinces of Canada on my way to Bari, Italy, to speak to 5,000 people on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR). As I fly over each province and the multitude of cities, I remember with great affection the many years of FIRE rallies, conferences, and clergy study days in those locations that I ve been blessed to participate in. And I think of the noble brothers and sisters in Christ who have loved and served Him for many years. As I fly over Nova Scotia and Halifax, I think of my most recent trip there just a few weeks ago and Fr. James Mallon, Fr. Simon Lobo, and Fr. Ken Lau, who are serving there generously, strengthened by the Holy Spirit. As I fly over parts of New Brunswick, I think of the FIRE rallies there and Bishop Faber Macdonald, a very dear friend of Renewal Ministries, who was first in Grand Falls, Newfoundland, and then in St. John s, New Brunswick, who supported us in so many ways. And as we fly over Prince Edward Island, I think of Fr. Gerry Tingley and Fr. Blair Bernard, who were pioneers of the Renewal in Prince Edward Island and helped serve so many people. And I think of Doug and Helen Cherry and their son Fr. Mark, who have served so many people for so many years Doug now from the other side and Helen and Fr. Mark still with us! The reunion in heaven is going to be so, so, so, so great!! I can t wait, and I think I ll cry when I see so many dear brothers and sisters, but I am very grateful to be able to continue to serve the Lord on this earth as long as He wills. Steve Clark, Jim Cavnar, & Ralph Martin THEN & NOW In 1967, Ralph and three others started working together for the Lord. Three of the four of them recently attended the Word of God s Jubilee celebration. (shown right) This is certainly a big year for significant anniversaries. Many of us at Renewal Ministries have had the chance to participate in some wonderful fiftieth anniversary celebrations for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. As I write this, we have team members in Hungary with our dear Hungarian friend, Country Coordinator Deacon Zoli Kunzabo. (Pictured below, left to right: Deacon Zoli Kunzabo, Sr. Ann Shields, SGL, Peter Herbeck, Kathleen Kittle, and Fr. Graham Keep) Locally, we celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of The Word of God Community and all the wonderful ministries and communities that came from its humble beginnings, when four of us moved to Ann Arbor after being fired from our jobs as campus ministers in East Lansing due to the initial controversy concerning the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. continued on page 2 Gerry Rauch, Steve Clark, & Ralph Martin

Ralph s Fatima talk inspired local students. Continued from page 1 Fruit from The Word of God includes parishes and churches that came into being, as well as wonderful ministries to the poor, Renewal Ministries, and many vocations to the priesthood and religious life. A very special surprise during our local celebration was that the graduate student who insisted that I make a Cursillo weekend when I was a senior at Notre Dame the weekend that truly changed the course of my life came to the celebration. I hadn t seen him for many, many years, and I was overwhelmed with gratitude when I saw him. I felt like kissing his feet, but was dissuaded from doing so! And the graces of the one-hundredth anniversary of Mary s apparitions to the three children of Fatima continue to be powerful. As you know from our November newsletter, the visit that Anne and I made to Fatima this past September really released some powerful graces into my life. Every chance I get, I go to one of our local churches, St. Thomas the Apostle, to pray the rosary before a wonderful banner with a photo of the three children and a depiction of the beautiful lady from heaven. I also am volunteering to speak anywhere I can in the local area on the message of Fatima and the remarkable response of the three children that so inspires me. I recently spoke to the fifth through eighth graders of a local Catholic school run by the Sisters of Mary Mother of the Eucharist. I felt inspired as I spoke and since have been further inspired by the response that some of the children made to my presentation of our Lady s message. Two of the teachers sent me the following unsolicited emails: Thank you very much for coming today. You shared such a meaningful message for all of us, especially for our kids. It is so important for them to get the message early in life. Today was All Dominican Saints Day, so at the end of the day, Sister Maria Faustina offered an Oreo cookie to each student. One of the boys went to grab one and stopped short of grabbing it. Sister asked him if he didn t like Oreos. The boy replied that he does, but he was doing a little sacrifice in reparation for sinners! The students were riveted as you spoke, incredibly quiet and attentive, it was really amazing! My kids all started spontaneously telling me how much they enjoyed the talk yesterday. They said it felt so short, and they wished it could go on for much longer. They said it was very meaningful to them. And they told me that all of the boys decided yesterday afternoon to give up water during basketball practice, prompted by the same student who wanted to give up his Oreos. They told me all of this on their own; I hadn't even mentioned the talk. Let s each of us not waste our suffering. As I write this, I have a very bad cold and cough and just hope I can give the two talks tomorrow, but I feel more able to offer this small suffering after learning more about the example of the Fatima children. Let s offer the sufferings that come our way in reparation for our own sins and the sins of the world, and in supplication for the conversion of sinners, as Mary requested. When we poder Mary s request, tremendous joy can come to us even in the midst of misery. This is because offering our suffering in union with Jesus' suffering helps other people, maybe even making the difference between heaven and hell!!!! Very grateful to be with you on the journey. Let s keep on! Your grateful brother, Ralph P.S. A SURVIVAL PLAN FOR 2018 & BEYOND By Lloyd Greenhaw Renewal Ministries' Country Coordinator It appears the world is out of control. We have only to look at the TV and ask, God, what are you doing? Signs of a Great Tribulation are all around us. Many prophetic words speak of a chastisement that God is pouring out to get our attention and bring us back to Him. Whether we are in The Tribulation or merely a dress rehearsal for it we need a survival plan. First, remember that God sees things differently than we do. He says we only receive when we give, we must humble ourselves to be exalted, and we are strong when we are weak. Consider His Word: Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the Gospel will save it (Mk 8: 35). A comprehensive survival plan consists in living exclusively for Jesus! We who believe in Christ will never die. Jesus says, Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna (Mt 10: 28). We will either live in heaven or face eternal death in hell, depending on how well we carry out our survival plan. Threats of war and terrorism open the door to anxiety, but we find our hope our only hope in the truth of God's Word. None of these things can touch us unless God permits it. Everything passes through His all-powerful hands. With God, we can confidently say, Death, where is your sting (1 Cor 15:55)? And, My refuge and fortress, my God in whom I trust (Ps 91:1-3). We must talk confidently to the Lord and trust in Him alone. We must get rid of our laundry list of needs. God knows what we need before we ask. We must let Him know that we know He's the winner and announce to ourselves that everything is OK. God is in charge. This is not some happy delusion; it is the Truth! We must announce to demonic spirits who would control us through fear and anxiety, which cause isolation, hoarding, selfishness, and desperation that they are not welcome. Name and renounce them out loud and command them to leave in Jesus' name! We must not accept their report of doom and gloom. God's report is much better, and it's true! 4 God gives promises to those who do this: You shall not fear the terror of the night nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that roams in darkness, nor the plague that ravages at noon. Though a thousand fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, near you it shall not come. You need simply watch; the punishment of the wicked you will see. You have the Lord for your refuge; you have made the Most High your stronghold. No evil shall befall you, no affliction come near your tent. For God commands the angels to guard you in all your ways. With their hands they shall support you, lest you strike your foot against a stone. (Ps 9:5-12) That's Good News that the world needs to hear! People live in fear and desperation, and we have the only answer that will bring peace to their souls. How do we lose our lives for the sake of the Lord? First, we must take ourselves off the throne and put Jesus there, where He belongs. This requires self-examination. Here are a few starter questions: Do I spend more time preparing for Sunday tailgate parties than I do getting ready for Mass? I give less at the offertory than what I spend on Did luxuries? How often do I go to Confession? heart touched by the suffering of others enough IsthatmyI am willing to do without so they can at least live? These are small questions compared to what will be asked of us at the Final Judgment. The troubles we see all around us ought to be a wakeup call. They are not meant to be a condemnation, but a much-needed reminder of who is in charge. God is not primarily interested in our bank balance, our homes, our cars, or our clothes. He is interested in our souls: Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. (Mt 6: 19-21)

Jesus came that we might have life and have it abundantly, but there is a condition: Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. (Mt 6: 33) The key is: Are we seeking God's kingdom and righteousness first? We can t dodge that supreme call. Everything depends on it! Are we going to procrastinate until calamity is on us, or are we going to implement our personal survival plan now? True change requires commitment! Freeing ourselves from slavery to things is not easy. When God delivered the Israelites from Egypt, they remained attracted to the things they had left behind. They complained about their food, saying Egypt s food was much better. God sent Sarap serpents to bring them back to their senses. And when Moses received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, the people worshipped a golden calf, an animal that pagan Egyptians considered divine. Like the Israelites, we can t give up things that keep us from loving THE THINGS the Lord with all our heart, mind, THAT and strength without God s grace CONTROL US and the sacraments of the Church. This is why, when God instituted ARE the sacrifices that atoned for sin, OUR GODS! He went directly to the old sinful practices that held people in bondage. He imposed upon Israel an all-encompassing regimen that minutely prescribed new customs for diet, hygiene, sex, and worship. Our survival plan requires that we too go directly at those things we have made idols. We may not bow down and worship these things directly, but the things that control us are our gods! Early Church Fathers saw our condition of original sin reflected in Israel's bondage. They saw our deliverance through baptism in the parting of the Red Sea. Israel had to conquer seven nations before entering the Promised Land; each of us must conquer seven deadly sins. The job is difficult, but not impossible. Begin with frequent participation in Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Consecrate yourself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and ask for her intersession every day.* Additionally, have your family pray together. Put on the full armor of God before you get out of bed (Eph 6:10-20). Pray to St. Michael the Archangel every morning, read Scripture daily, and share this message with others. Stand your ground, do all your duty requires, and the evil one must flee! You will be amazed at the promises God has hidden not from you, but for you! Leave a Legacy of Faith We are extremely grateful for the generosity of so many people who strive to be the Lord's light in this world and who recognize Renewal Ministries' instrumental role in keeping the flame of faith burning through our efforts to: Share the Word of God Across the World Offer formation for Priests, Deacons, Religious Sisters, and Laity Evangelize and Educate through TV and Radio Programs Provide Young Adult Outreach Be a Light in the Darkness For the same reasons you support Renewal Ministries now, would you consider remembering us in your will? Spreading the GOSPEL in Haiti 6 By Nancy Greenhaw Country Coordinator for Haiti Lloyd and Nancy Greenhaw minister in the United States, Haiti, Papua New Guinea, Ethiopia, and several other countries in Africa. They conduct missions, conferences, and retreats for adults and youth. They also are involved in prison ministry and work with the homeless. Nancy and Lloyd live in Texas and have two daughters, fourteen grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. We are here on earth to help carry the cross of Christ, the Christ hidden in other human beings, and to help in whatever way we can. We may, like Simon, have literally a strong arm to give. We may have material goods to share. We may have time we can give to Christ for others. Suffering contains in itself all that Simon gave: our mind and body, our frustrations, and our identification with other souls who are carrying a heavy cross. Caryll Houselander (+1954) British mystic & poet Once again, we flew into the disaster-stricken country of Haiti and saw blue tarps, no power, no sewers, and twisted roads filled with potholes. It would seem that after the millions of dollars poured into this country, the poor people would see a better quality of life but that never seems to be the case. Thankfully, we partner with Haiti Missions INC (HMI), which responds quickly during times of disaster and helps people at other times. When Hurricane Matthew s winds destroyed most of the homes in one community, only three of the eighty-four homes HMI had built were hurt beyond repair. In this community, not one person died! And thanks to fifty-three wells of clean water drilled by HMI, there was no cholera! To survive, the people ran to the sturdy cement buildings constructed by HMI and stood together as the world outside was destroyed. In trying to understand why nobody died, I realized that every HMI house was consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I think our Queen sent angels to protect them! As we visited people with our team and HMI founders Deacon Lloyd and Faie Duplantis, we watched people run to the deacon, thank him, and cry for joy. They know they are probably alive because of the generosity of HMI donors. Deacon Lloyd thanked me several times for the humanitarian aid Renewal Ministries sent; it was a blessing for us to see what God can do with people who trust Him and dare to hope for more. This trip was a real faith builder. Our team spent its first morning there serving spaghetti to school kids. No students ate until all were served they can teach us manners! One classroom was missing a roof, steel girders were twisted like pretzels, and blue tarps covered many of the kids, but school went on. Then, we stopped at the house of a woman who was very excited to see us. She had been attending a Seventhday Adventist Church, but said nobody there cared about how or where she was living. Now she is overjoyed and amazed at God s providence! She became Catholic on her own. The priest had said, Don t come to our church because of the house. We will give you the house at an appropriate time. He also gave her vegetables when they had extra. She would eat some and sell some to provide food for her children. Real Christianity draws people to Him! JONAS' STORY... There is a blind boy named Jonas that is very special to Deacon Lloyd and Faie. They have known him most of his life. Even though his story was never verified, Jonas fell off of a porch as a child, and a stick was embedded in his eye. Someone took it out and put bleach in both of his eyes to clean them and he was blinded as a result. The team spent its first morning serving spaghetti to students.

Candlelight service during the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Conference Jeremie, Haiti The deacon flew Jonas to America, where the doctor confirmed he will never see again. Jonas has a gift of singing worship music, and he always sings to the deacon and whatever group is with him. The deacon wanted Jonas to sign a poster for an American fundraiser, so he handed Jonas a pen. However, Jonas didn t know how to hold it or what his signature was. Some of our team members cried at the realization that Jonas has no access to any written materials. Nevertheless, he was happy, joyful, and blessed that the deacon had come. GRATEFUL FOR THE SIMPLE THINGS... Each year, Deacon Lloyd and Faie bring duffel bags filled with playing cards, clothing, shoes, and other supplies like peanuts and Slim Jims. We spent a couple days preparing these materials for distribution. Another day, we inspected a well being drilled by HMI. The people are so thrilled with this well, even though some of them must walk over two hours to get water! YOU VISITED ME IN PRISON... We also visited the prison. After the hurricane, HMI restored the roof and the guards quarters, and built a yard so the men have room to move. Earlier, Deacon Lloyd also had a well drilled for the prisoners. Lloyd shared the Word and his testimony with the prisoners. He said prison can be a blessing, because it gives a person time to think about whether their previous life was lived in freedom or deep slavery to drugs, alcohol, and violence. He said God loves them and wants eternal life for them, but they have to make a choice. Suddenly the noise stopped, and every bar-covered window and door was crowded by men who knew they had made mistakes and who now wanted a better life. Lloyd shared how Jesus had they also wanted a miracle, they needed to put their lives in Jesus hands. Lloyd then led them in a prayer of accepting Jesus. It seemed everyone in every cell repeated it. There was hope, peace, and quite a few tears in the eyes I looked into afterward. This year for the first time, we also laid hands on the prisoners and prayed for them. CCR CONFERENCE... Lloyd and I also spoke at all three days of the twenty-fifth annual Catholic Charismatic Renewal Conference of Jeremie, Haiti. Lloyd talked about the great power available to those who work with the Lord to make disciples, and on the many new gifts the Holy Spirit wants to pour on the Church in Jeremie. He especially stressed holiness. He then invited the large crowd to the front of the stage. Hundreds came forward in great expectation. Lloyd led them in a prayer of commitment to Jesus and for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. He asked for gifts of healing, faith, prosperity, prophesy, preaching, teaching, and many others. It was a blessed and lively night! The next night, we were blessed to speak onstage with Bishop Joseph Gontran Decoste. I led the people in a prayer of forgiveness, and Lloyd did a time of renunciation. We renounced Satan, sickness, the spirit of disaster, and more. The people really entered in. After our talk, Deacon Lloyd and Fr. Jomanas blessed everyone with holy water. That was powerful! see they made a connection. Later, they brought her clothes and a hat. With some inquiry, our tender-hearted friends discovered she had lost her only daughter in the earthquake in Port-au- Prince and could live there no longer, due to many painful memories. We had to leave the next day, so we do not know what will happen to her, but I m proud to be part of the team that helped one life from aching. From the poem by Emily Dixon, If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; if I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin into his nest again, I shall not live in vain. SEEING WITH HIS EYES... A couple people on our team had radar for the poor. While driving, they saw a woman in the bushes, who we had passed many times without seeing. Our team members were touched by this homeless woman who seemed alone. They asked us to gather the food we given him a miracle, and he said that if had, and they gave it to her.
