Knights of Columbus Cd913.org Issue No. 8 APRIL 2017 2017 Greetings From the Navigator My Brother Sir Knights, Joined the Knights in 2006 Received my 4th Degree in 2007 Became an Assembly officer in 2011 The spring season is upon us which brings about the rebirth of nature. I see it as God s way of letting us know that we have much to look forward to. The sleepiness of winter gives way to the awakening of spring. The beauty of God s creations blossom with their brilliant color. The birds sing as the morning sun rises to bring a new day. And soon, we celebrate God s son rising to bring the world new hope for the future. The word, rejuvenation comes to mind as spring arrives and the Easter season approaches. I hope all of you feel the rejuvenation of God s hope and look forward to the new life that sprouts all around us in the weeks ahead. Here is wishing all of you a Buona Pasqua, or Happy Easter. Beyond Easter Sunday, we as Knights anticipate a busy spring season. The Exemplification for Knights receiving their Patriotic Degree is scheduled at the end of May. Do you remember what it was like to be called Sir Knight for the first 1 time? The support of the candidates from your Council is important for these Knights to feel appreciated. They need affirmation that they are making the right decision to become a Sir Knight. If you have even one (1) candidate from your council, I encourage you to place a congratulatory ad in the dinner program. That acknowledgement will go a long way to give your candidate a true sense of brotherhood and unity. We need to grow our ranks, but not just to make our numbers increase. We need to obtain the support of our fellow man so we can project the strength of our Order through the positive message of the principles we are sworn to exemplify. Please read the Captain s Chronicles below from your Faithful Captain, SK Fran O Hara, PSW. We are going to establish a fund whereby we can assist each other in times of need. There have been many times when a fellow Sir Knight could have used a helping hand from his brother Knights. The creation of this fund will be designed to be that source of help. During the month of April, we will form a kickoff committee to get this up and running. May through July will be the planning of events to raise money for this fund. Somewhere between September and November is when we will hold these events. Feel free to contact any Assembly Officer to get involved with this process. All are welcome to be a part of the development of this new charity for members of the Cardinal Dougherty Assembly.

This month we will begin the process to elect officers to serve for the 2017-2018 Columbian Year. If you have someone you would like to nominate, please submit their name to one of our current officers or come to the Conclave on April 6 and deliver your nomination in person. I look forward to seeing more of your at our next Conclave meeting on April 6. Vivat Jesus, Neal Pizzano Faithful Navigator, CDA 913 A Message from our Faithful Friar The Sacred Triduum As we are approaching the end of the Lenten season, it gives us pause to reflect on one of the purposes of the season of Lent-that of preparation for the celebration of the Sacred Triduum. The Sacred Triduum is the most solemn of times during the Church s liturgical year and it may be seen as the summit or pinnacle of the liturgical year. With the conclusion of Lent, we begin the Triduum with the celebration of the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday evening, continuing with the Good Friday liturgies, followed by the celebration of the Solemn Easter Vigil on Saturday evening and then concluding with the joyous observance of Easter Sunday, the Resurrection of Our Lord. These most holy of days encapsulate, to a great degree, a compendium of our Catholic faith and some of its central truths. The Mass of the Lord s Supper is marked by the washing of the feet which is recounted in the Gospel passage of that Mass. It represents the example given by Jesus to his apostles in that Gospel of a life of discipleship through loving service by which we are called to imitate Jesus. This Mass also recalls for us the institution of the Eucharist as well as the sacred priesthood by our great High Priest, Jesus Christ, which took place on that first Holy Thursday at the Last Supper. Good Friday is that day in which we call to mind the Lord s Passion and Death and the Good Friday liturgy brings that into focus with the proclamation of the Passion as well as the veneration of the Cross and the reception of Holy Communion, the true body and blood of Jesus which he offered up for us on the cross. On the next day, we are led into the ongoing celebration of the Sacred Triduum which is highlighted by the Easter Vigil. This solemn liturgy begins with the lighting of the fire in preparation for the lighting of the Paschal candle and the singing of the Exsultet; continues with an extended liturgy of the Word which recounts the outstanding deeds of salvation history; followed by the reception into full communion of candidates and the catechumens into the Church and concluding with the Liturgy of the Eucharist. This liturgy is a most fitting celebration in preparation for the most solemn of liturgical celebrationsthat of Easter Sunday when the Church joyously commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. As Knights of Columbus, our participation in the life of the Church should be a hallmark of who we are as Knights. Participation in the Sacred Triduum allows us to enter more deeply into central truths of our faith. I encourage you, where possible, to conclude your Lenten preparation with active participation in the liturgies of the Sacred Triduum. In closing, I would like to leave you with this thought that paraphrases a reflection of many spiritual writers throughout the years- There is no Resurrection without the Cross and there is no Cross without the Resurrection. Vivat Jesus, Fr. Dennis 2

Captain s Chronicles Check our website, cd913.org. The Cardinal Dougherty Assembly website is the easiest way to get information about the Assembly. If anyone has pictures that they want to share, send them to fran@ridleypa.us. Membership The Exemplification of the Fourth Degree is scheduled for Sunday May 28, 2017 at the Doubletree Hotel in King of Prussia. Our Assembly has pledged 26 new members. Four have already signed up; so, we will probably make 30. Please give the opportunity to all Brother Knights to make the Patriotic Degree. The first step in a man s journey to the Patriotic Degree is to become a Knight of Columbus. There is still time for a Catholic man to become a Knight in time to make the Patriotic Degree in May if you give them the opportunity. There are Admission (1 st ) and Formation (2 nd ) Degrees scheduled for 8:00 PM on Tuesday April 11, 2017 at Peace Council. A Knighthood (3 rd ) Degree is scheduled for 2:00 PM on Sunday April 23, 2017. Candidates are asked to report 30 minutes prior to the start of the degree. Knights helping Knights / Keeping Father McGivney's Dream Alive Many things have changed since March 29, 1892 when Father McGivney called a small group of men together in the basement of Saint Mary's church. Their mission to help Brother Knights and their Families remains as critical today as it was then. As we approach the 100th Anniversary of our founding, Cardinal Dougherty Assembly is re-energizing ourselves to help the Brother Knights of Our Assembly through Volunteerism and raising money for Brothers in need. We are establishing a Charity Fund and a Committee of Volunteers to be ready when a need arises. The Assembly Officers are putting together plans to kickstart this effort in the next several months. Please consider participating with your time, donations and prayers. Thank you. Dinner Dance 2017 The 97 th Annual CDA Dinner Dance was held on February 25, 2016 at a Peace Council, 1195 Haverford Road, Crum Lynne, PA. This year s Honoree was Past Faithful Navigator Mike Vecchione! Thanks to the committee, Peace Home Association, and Edie s Catering for making it a great evening. Get yours in the narthex after mass or by contacting Joe Fagan at (484)574-1012 or via email joefagan1@verizon.net. Youth Program. Youth Committee Report In the past Fraternal Years it has been hard to coordinate a patriotic trip for the Youth Program due to the present social climate in which we live. The amount of vetting would be too extensive for the Assembly to complete in order for our members to participate in a patriotic youth group retreat. In order to circumvent this procedure the Youth Program Committee has decided to donate funds to a youth organization that already has the required vetting and a patriotic trip planned. The Assembly during the March Conclave has voted to sponsor The Penn Valley Cub Pack 247 field trip to Fort Mifflin planned in the fall of 2017. A five hundred dollar check will be presented to Cub Scout Pack Leader Bill Hillman and a few Cub Scouts at our April 5 th Conclave. The Penn Valley Cub Scout Pack 247 encompasses St Colman Parish Home of The Bishop Kenrick Council #2256 which is one of the charter Councils of our Assembly.
