Early Life Melcina Throckmorton Yancey was called home to be the Lord on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 surrounded by her family. Mother Yancey was born on October 3, 1927 to parentage of the late Graham Throckmorton and Pearl Harris Throckmorton. To this union was born eight siblings: Zora Throckmorton and Essie Throckmorton of the home and Catherleen Washington of Clinton, MD; Glanzy Throckmorton, Symiter Throckmorton, Isabell Throckmorton and Elnora Throckmorton who preceded her in death. Mother Yancey was educated in the Granville County Public School system attending Symrnal Branch as a child and later on graduated with the class of 1947 from Joe Toler High School. She entered in Holy Matrimony with the late Willie Graham Yancey whose union started at a community carnival at Joe Toler School, which later led to her proposing to him. To this matrimony was born eleven children: Susie, Mary, Willie, Willard, Gwen, Lilly, Gloretta, Larry, Joseph, Melcina and Detroit. A Praying Mother of Faith Often called, Momma Yancey or Little Girl by her children and her spiritual sons and daughters, Mother Yancey was a praying woman who feared God and exemplified faith in her daily walk with Christ. She believed God in spite of the imminent threats against her children, her church and her community. Mother Yancey sacrificed public work to be a devoted wife and mother. She often prayed and voiced her desires to see her children saved and spreading the Gospel to the world. She was a mighty woman of God who touched three generations of Levites: Musicians, Psalmists, Preachers of the Gospel, Ministers of Music and church leaders in various churches throughout the community. A psalmist in her own right, she was instrumental in developing three singing groups from her eleven children. A Mother of the Church Mother Yancey gave her life to Christ at an early age. She was a devoted member of St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church and enjoyed attending Sunday school and church services until her health declined. She served as a member of the senior choir and the missionary circle. As the Mother of the Church, she dedicated herself to prayer, studying her Sunday school lesson and encouraging others to Stay with God! She often imparted wisdom about raising children, marriage, singleness, how ladies should dress and loving one another. Mother Yancey often expressed her love for her pastor and church family, and enjoyed her spiritual role as Mother of the Church. A Mother of the Community Mother Yancey loved her community and trained her children to use their gifts and talents to benefit the sick and those who were less fortunate. She had a huge heart for people and was mission-minded. She believed in treating others as you wanted to be treated. She initiated her children into singing groups and traveled with them on many engagements. Mother Yancey encouraged her children to spread the love of God through prayer, service, and time to support the poor and less fortunate. She was instrumental in forming the Yancey Family Ministries that serves community outreaches; such as, The Willie Graham s Legacy Musical Program, which is held bi-annual at St. Matthew Baptist Church and the Harbour House Convention, which is held annually at Cornerstone Christian Community Church. In her later years, she enjoyed family gatherings, opening her gifts and greeting cards with money, listening to gospel music, reading the scriptures and praying. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many. Mother Yancey was a strong woman of God and will be greatly missed.
