Westminster Presbyterian Church February 2019 The Broadcaster "Making Disciples by Celebrating the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ" The Pastor s Page -New Members, New Leaders, New Season February 2019 will be a big month for us at Westminster Presbyterian in terms of welcoming new faces. On Sunday, February 3rd we will be celebrating with the Jaegle Worship Plan family and Tufford family in baptizing their newborn son. It's also going to be a busy Sunday with Communion and the Souper Bowl of Caring. But what a wonderful day to celebrate so many relationships we have as a church family! The next week on February 10th, will be Scout Sunday Later in the month, on Sunday, February 17th we will be celebrating Confirmation Sunday. This past fall, five of our young people: Ellie Bredenberg, Eric Green, Hannah and Hope Smith, and Jordan Tufford completed the confirmation course and were invited to become members of our church. That Sunday our young people will lead worship with us as we celebrate their commitment in faith and to the life our congregation in membership. On a later Sunday we will also be welcoming new members to our church who have come to us from other congregations. This is also the season for us to welcome and encourage our new leaders. The January annual meeting is a time when our congregation affirms the leadership gifts and entrusts new Elders and Deacons to lead our congregation, many of who have never previously served as Elders or Deacons in our church. Some are even newer members of our congregation who are so passionate about the mission of our church that they are willing to take on the responsibility of leadership through ordination. As members of our congregation, let s do our best to encourage these new leaders as they get to know "the ropes", recognizing that their ideas may be different from the way we have always done certain things. And that is more than okay: it is wonderful for us to have new leaders, fresh ideas, and the trust to change as we grow together in faith. So please do your best in the month ahead to extend your welcome and encourage new faces. It is vital to us as a congregation that we allow seeds of faith to grow without squelching them. It is an exciting time to be your pastor and a wonderful new season for us as Westminster Presbyterian Church. Peace, David INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Dates to Remember 2 News 3-4 Calendar 5 6

From our beginning in December 1996 we just used "hey you" or "that project". Then came February and our 501C3 status and we named Have A Heart to express a new Mission for the Presbyterian Church. With the help of the Westminster School District and Smith World Travel we are still providing food and clothes to those in our area who need it. This month s Communion Offering is Souper Bowl of Caring. SOUPER BOWL OF CARING SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3 A simple prayer: "Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat" is inspiring a youth-led movement to help hungry and hurting people around the world. This prayer, delivered by Brad Smith, then a seminary intern serving in Columbia, SC, gave birth to an idea. Why not use Super Bowl weekend, a time when people come together for football and fun, to also unify the nation for a higher good: collecting dollars and canned food for the needy? Once again, the youth group will be collecting cans of food on Super Bowl Sunday, February 3, before church. In addition, the Communion Offering will be collected in the name of the national Souper Bowl of Caring. All funds will be donated to the Westy Pres FISH Food Bank. Bob s Musings A year ago, on the first Sunday in January 2018 the Westminster Presbyterian Church started a new journey when the Rev. David Wright became our spiritual leader. Under his leadership our church has had an outstanding year. He has made the Westminster Presbyterian Church his church and has taken us to new heights. For example: our first Easter Sunrise Service in a long time, a bible study with B nai Torah Congregation, a new community awareness of our mission outreach to our community and its homeless, and most important is David s Family and what they mean to all of us. Some new things for 2018 include a nursery attendant, new Christmas lights, roping and trees, new windows in Nickless Hall, two new office computers, a membership class that will soon bring us 10 new members and the ability to say that we completed, successfully, our 126 th year as a congregation. One of the things that you and I can do as members of the congregation is to ask past members, friends and neighbors to join us in worship and learn about our new church, and remember that we need to attend on a regular basis as well. As we start 2019, we ask God s blessing as we start the church s 127 th year that he be with us on our journey to 2020. God Bless you all!!!! - Bob Briggs, President Karen and I wish to express a heartfelt and grateful thank you to all who donated money, garage sale items, and purchased dinner tickets as we raised funds for the beautiful new windows, which are now installed in Nickless Hall. - Don Goodman Do you love to read? Do you like to get together to talk? If you do, you should come to the book group! We are meeting on March 10, at 7:00 pm, at Pauline and John Maurer s home to discuss our latest selection, Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens. It s a story about an abandoned child, Kya, who lives in the marshlands of North Carolina. Will she be able to learn to trust human connections? How does a murder mystery tie in? Read the book to find out, then join us to talk about it. We re a friendly bunch, and we would love to see new faces. 4
