May 2013 Where Hope leads to Destiny Inside this issue: Lady Shulanda s Word Read the Bible in a Year 2 2 Member Spotlight 3 Destiny s Kids 4 Happy Mother s Day 5 Conference Flyer 6 The Leaning Tower of You Workers laid the foundation for one of Italy s most famous structures in 1173, a tower designed to stand next to a cathedral. During construction, however, they discovered the soil was softer than previously thought, and the tower began to sink. Today, the top of that tower is nearly thirteen feet off center. People come from around the world to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and scientists travel to Pisa yearly to measure its slow descent. They calculate that, at its current rate of decline and without taking any countermeasures, it will one day collapse. Nothing is more important in construction work than making sure you have the foundation right. If you don t get that correct, then nothing else will matter. It may be more fun to decide what color to paint the rooms and how you will decorate the finished structure, but without a proper foundation, nothing else you do will last long enough to make any difference. Smart and successful Christians build their lives on the right foundation. Scripture makes it clear that the only foundation possible for a sound spiritual life is Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11). And where you do you learn about Jesus? In the Word of God. The Word is Truth and it will never lead you astray. If you are building your life on the right foundation, which is Jesus Christ, then you re also regularly getting into the Word. Only that foundation will stand the test of time. Build your life on the foundation of Jesus Christ, as you learn of Him in Scripture, and stand straight and tall as the years pass. Church Announcements 7 Bishop Maurice Keller

As much as you want to see Him...He wants to see you more! YOU have been chosen by Christ...He has claimed you for His beloved! Member Spotlight Mrs. Sherrion Threatt Fomby GNDCC praise God for our own Sister Sherrion Threatt Fomby! Sister Sherrion Threatt Fomby is originally from Pell City, Alabama, and now resides in Lincoln. She celebrates her birthday on September 23, and enjoys food of all kinds, but especially chicken. For over ten years she has worked as a cook, and currently works at Duran South as part of the lunchroom staff. Yes, Sister Sherrion is a wonderful cook and can bake a mean yeast roll, but her favorite pastime is singing the gospel. She is a loving wife and caring mother of two children, Sheree and DeMarcus Fomby. DeMarcus, her son, is married to Yashika Fomby, and they have two handsome sons. Judging from the smile that crossed her face when she mentioned her grandsons, they are the apple of her eyes! When asked what she likes most about being a member of GNDCC, Sister Sherrion Threatt Fomby said that she loves the freedom in worship!

Page 5 Happy Mother s Day! What the Bible Says about Christian Mothers Being a mother is a very important role that the Lord chooses to give to many women. A Christian mother is told to love her children (Titus 2:4-5), in part so that she does not bring reproach on the Lord and on the Savior whose name she bears. Children are a gift from the Lord (Psalm 127:3-5). In Titus 2:4, the Greek word philoteknos appears in reference to mothers loving their children. This word represents a special kind of mother love. The idea that flows out of this word is that of caring for our children, nurturing them, affectionately embracing them, meeting their needs, and tenderly befriending each one as a unique gift from the hand of God. Several things are commanded of Christian mothers in God s Word: Availability morning, noon, and night (Deuteronomy 6:6-7) Involvement interacting, discussing, thinking, and processing life together (Ephesians 6:4) Teaching the Scriptures and a biblical worldview (Psalm 78:5-6; Deuteronomy 4:10; Ephesians 6:4) Training helping a child to develop skills and discover his/her strengths (Proverbs 22:6) and spiritual gifts (Romans 12:3-8 and 1 Corinthians 12) Discipline teaching the fear of the Lord, drawing the line consistently, lovingly, firmly (Ephesians 6:4; Hebrews 12:5-11; Proverbs 13:24; 19:18; 22:15; 23:13-14; 29:15-17) Nurture providing an environment of constant verbal support, freedom to fail, acceptance, affection, unconditional love (Titus 2:4; 2 Timothy 1:7; Ephesians 4:29-32; 5:1-2; Galatians 5:22; 1 Peter 3:8-9) Modeling with Integrity living what you say, being a model from which a child can learn by catching the essence of godly living (Deuteronomy 4:9, 15, 23; Proverbs 10:9; 11:3; Psalm 37:18, 37). The Bible never states that every woman should be a mother. However, it does say that those whom the Lord blesses to be mothers should take the responsibility seriously. Mothers have a unique and crucial role in the lives of their children. Motherhood is not a chore or unpleasant task. Just as a mother bears a child during pregnancy, and just as a mother feeds and cares for a child during infancy, so mothers also play an ongoing role in the lives of their children, whether they are adolescents, teenagers, young adults, or even adults with children of their own. While the role of motherhood must change and develop, the love, care, nurture, and encouragement a mother gives should never cease.
