Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

THE GOSPEL OPPOSES LEGALISM Galatians 2:15-16

Galatians 2:15-16 We who are Jews by birth and not 'Gentile sinners' know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

CONTEXT OF GALATIANS False teachers (Judaizers) had gone to the new believers in Galatia. They taught that in order for Gentiles to be saved, they had to follow Jewish laws. Many believers were influenced. The church was split. Some were discouraged as well. To enhance their own authority, these Judaizers undermined the authority of Paul, representing him as an inferior teacher and apostle. When Paul heard this news, he wrote immediately to the Galatian believers, denouncing the Judaizers and their false teachings and emphasizing his credentials as an apostle.

CONTEXT OF CHAPTER 2 In this chapter, Paul defended his credentials and his gospel of grace by offering 2 proofs to the Galatians : The apostles and leaders in Jerusalem approved Paul s gospel of grace and authenticated his apostleship. Paul s confrontation & correction of the apostle Peter who was showing preference to the Judaizers and their false system of legalism validates Paul s apostolic authority and message.

ONE KEY LESSON FROM GALATIANS 2: SALVATION IS BY FAITH IN CHRIST, NOT BY GOOD DEEDS Galatians 2:15-16 We who are Jews by birth and not 'Gentile sinners' know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

Justified - dikaioo `to be pronounced and treated as righteous

DOCTRINE OF JUSTIFICATION Justification is the act of God whereby He declares the believing sinner righteous in Jesus Christ. Warren Wiersbe

DOCTRINE OF JUSTIFICATION The act of God - It is not a process but a one-time judicial act of God, by which he pardons all the sins of those who believe in Christ, and accepts/treats them as righteous in the eye of the law.

DOCTRINE OF JUSTIFICATION The act of God not the deserving efforts of man.

DOCTRINE OF JUSTIFICATION `whereby He declares not `whereby He imparts. In justification, God declares/pronounces the believing sinner righteous; He does not make him righteous. (Rom 10:3-9).

DOCTRINE OF JUSTIFICATION `the believing sinner The sole instrument on which the righteousness of Christ is credited to the believer is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

DOCTRINE OF JUSTIFICATION `righteous in Christ - The law is not relaxed or set aside but justification is a declaration that the believing sinner is credited with and now possesses the righteousness of Christ which perfectly and for ever satisfies the law. As such, the person justified is declared to be entitled to all the advantages arising from perfect obedience to the law (Rom 5:1-10).

DOCTRINE OF JUSTIFICATION Being justified by faith in Christ does not result in sinful behaviour. Romans 6:1-2,14 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

DOCTRINE OF JUSTIFICATION Being justified by faith in Christ leads to intrinsically motivated morality/good works. Romans 7:6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

Application: ENSURE LEGALISM DOES NOT CREEP INTO OUR LIVES AND INTO GOD S CHURCH TODAY. Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

What is legalism?

Legalism is Faith in Jesus Christ ++

Scot McKnight Legalism is any practice or belief that is added to the gospel that compromises the sufficiency of Christ as Savior and jeopardizes the adequacy of the Spirit in moral guidance. Secondarily, legalism demands that one adopt a group s special markers in order to be fully acceptable to God.

Though legalism s concerns are nearly always good things, there are some valid concerns: Legalism always ends up adding something to the gospel. Legalism often is noted by an overemphasis on performance. Legalism always erects boundaries between people. Legalism creates an atmosphere that is pervaded by judgmentalism. Legalism often goes beyond the Bible in order to protect the Bible.

QUESTIONS WE NEED TO ASK

AM I TRUSTING IN MYSELF FOR MY SALVATION? Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast.

The essence of legalism is trusting in the religious activity rather than trusting in God. It is putting our confidence in a practice rather than in a Person. And without fail this will lead us to love the practice more than the Person. -Jack Deer, Surprised by the Power of the Spirit

AM I TRYING TO ADD LAW TO GRACE? Romans 11:6 And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.

Rules and standards are not the problem. They have their place in the home, in schools, and in your personal life. It s fine to have personal convictions that you hold dearly. The issue is insisting that compliance with rules makes one spiritual or right with God. Donald Grey Barnhouse

AM I REJOICING IN THE FACT THAT I AM JUSTIFIED BY FAITH IN CHRIST? Romans 8:1-2 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

Chuck Swindoll Legalism is a killer. It kills congregations when a pastor is a legalist. It kills pastors when congregations are legalistic. Legalistic people with their rigid do s and don ts kill the spirit of joy and spontaneity [and] drain the very life out of a church, even though they may claim they are doing God a service.

AM I WALKING IN THE FREEDOM OF GRACE? Romans 7:6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

I have found, in my own spiritual life, that the more rules I lay down for myself, the more sins I commit. The habit of regular morning and evening prayer is one which is indispensable to a believer's life, but the prescribing of the length of prayer, and the constrained remembrance of so many persons and subjects, may gender unto bondage, and strangle prayer rather than assist it. Charles Spurgeon

AM I BEING GRACIOUS TO OTHERS? Matthew 23:23 Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
