RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING THE ST. JEANNE JUGAN CONFIRMATION PROGRAM: Dear incoming 9th graders, REFLECT Today's Gospel offers a rare framework a story in a story. Most of the healing miracles are standalone encounters. One person approaches Jesus, demonstrates faith, and is healed. The evangelist tells the next story. This Gospel, however, is different. Jesus is on his way to heal one person, a young girl of twelve, and is interrupted on his journey by "a woman afflicted with hemorrhages." She bravely approaches Jesus in a crowd, despite being ritually unclean from her bleeding, and stretches out to touch his cloak. She is healed! Jesus meets her eye, confirms her faith, and connues on to resurrect the young girl. Reading this passage, it might be easier to idenfy with one story the longsuffering woman or the young, innocent girl and to move past the other. But here they sit side by side. The girl is twelve. The woman has been suffering for twelve years. For the Gospel writers, number parallels have deep symbolic meaning. Between the woman and the young girl, we are not one or the other. We are both. None of us had a perfect childhood, perfect families, or a perfect peer group. As we endure pain, disappointment, or unmet expectaons, it can feel like a part of our childhood hopes have died. Our coping mechanisms, social adaptaons, and hidden secrets can make us the "walking wounded" in some respects. Jesus wants to do more than simply staunch the bleeding. His healing hand makes dead things come alive. He awakens the dreams that are asleep. This process requires prayer, conversaons with trusted community and spiritual mentors, and crical looks at difficult areas of our life. However, we can believe the words of our Lord. If we approach Jesus in faith, believing that he wants to heal and save, we, too, will hear his calming words spoken over the hurts of our life. "I say to you, arise!" "Go in peace." There will be one last Confirmaon meeng for all incoming 9th graders entering into the Confirmaon Program on Sunday, July 22nd at 12:00 pm at Holy Family Church in Fr. Kerwan Hall. If you have not aended a Confirmaon parent/student meeng yet, please plan to join us. CCD REGISTRATIONS: For planning purposes, please send in CCD registraons (mailed out to current CCD families back in May) as soon as possible. Registraon for new CCD students will be held in the Fall, details to follow. PARISH LISTENING SESSION August 6, 2018 What are you thinking? The Archbishop of Harord wants to know. We invite all St. Jeanne Jugan parishioners to express their opinions at our Listening Session on three crical quesons: What are we (as an Archdiocese) doing well? What are we (as an Archdiocese) doing not so well? What are we (as an Archdiocese) not doing that we should be? The Archdiocesan Synod tled Stewards for Tomorrow is considering the future from the perspecve of the New Evangelization, a missionary challenge articulated by Pope Francis. On August 6, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, we will hold our Listening Session in Father Fitzmaurice Hall at St. Bernard Church, beginning with a light meal. If you are willing to parcipate, please respond to Sally at the St. Bernard rectory at 8607498353 by August 1st. Thank you! NEWLY ORDAINED PRIESTS On Saturday, June 23, 2018 at St. Joseph s Cathedral in Harord, CT, Reverend David Madejeski and Reverend Joshua Wilbur were ordained by the Most Reverend Archbishop Leonard Blair. Prior to his priestly ordinaon, Fr. David Madejeski was assigned as a seminarian to St. Bernard Church. Fr. David Madejeski s first Mass was at Holy Cross Church in New Britain, CT on Sunday, June 24th. We wish both Fr. David and Fr. Joshua the very best. May God bless them.

St. Bernard School & Lile Angels PreSchool SBS Graduate Aurelie Barry Valedictorian of Enfield High School I grew up in the St. Bernard School community. One of the classrooms is where I lost my first tooth. The gym is where I spent every third Friday night of the month as my mother worked BINGO, building Legos and rolling down the hill outside. The first room on the le of the junior high wing is where I began to develop my love for biology. I have spent countless hours in the St. Bernard s building, and that me has led me to be the person I am today. The environment you are in as a child helps shape who you become as an adult. I spent onehundred and eighty days a year for nine years at St. Bernard School, so I credit SBS with a lot of my personality and habits. It was at St. Bernard School that I was given a nurturing environment by presenng me with posive examples. Every teacher and administrator who was concerned about me and guided me, not only as a student, but as a person, has impacted my life significantly. It was at St. Bernard School that I formed the study habits which have helped me achieve the posion as Enfield High s class of 20172018 Valedictorian. When I went into high school I learned that not everyone had the opportunity to pracce good study habits and discover how they best learned new informaon. I was able to figure out how to review for each class in order to maximize the informaon I retained for each subject style. I would help my friends with their studying because I knew through Mrs. Renner s vocab tests that I needed to make flashcards and study them for a half hour every night. In math, because I struggled at first, I knew that I would need to stay aer school with my teacher, because that is what I did in previous years with Miss Landry. These are just examples of the tools St. Bernard School gave me to excel in high school level academics. My me at St. Bernard School was not just about academics, though. It was also about developing strong morals. I remember recing the golden rule treat others the way you want to be treated in Mrs. Taylor s Kindergarten class. The most beauful thing about the St. Bernard s community is the fact that not only did I recite those words, but I had a desire for helping others inslled in me. I spent the Sundays before holidays packing baskets of food and delivering them to community members who otherwise would not have had holiday meals. Coin collecons were oen being run for the benefit of community members in need. I have fond memories of the days where the enre school parcipated in the Walk for Abby because I knew how much it meant to her family. Today, I look back at my high school career and realize I stayed acve in the community without even thinking twice, because I learned how important that is. Currently, I am in a few different organizaons through the high school that are dedicated to community service, such as Naonal Honor Society, Rachel s Challenge, and the Enfield Youth Council, and I love every second of it. St. Bernard School prepared me not only for my academic future, but for moral growth as well, due to the Catholic community I was surrounded by. Every teacher, administrator, deacon, and priest knew me by name and supported me as I grew, which was an incredibly powerful force. It is why I am going to be aending Emmanuel College, a Catholic college, for the next four years. Thank you, St. Bernard School, for helping me achieve my goals!
