Page 4 NO HOLDS BARRED By M. A. SADANAND D-vitaminised terrace My son, who is not only a mere creative adman but a health freak, can diagnose what ails me by a mere look. All right, tell me what ails me, I ordered with a gasp, clutching my painful back. Done. You have all the illnesses that 80-plus age people have, minus even a fleeting kiss of the great Sun on your daily living in this 4-floor shelf you have chosen as your home, though it has a wide terrace that has a flood of sunlight. The only people who get the sun to warm up their bodies are the charwomen who go up the terrace to dry the clothes of the occupants below the tiers of floors. Have you ever heard of these charwomen complaining of backache, carrying all the goods up and down? I don t listen to what charwomen say. Father, don t argue like a rotten lawyer. Look at the beautiful blue sky. It is full of unpolluted hot rays. Your backache will vanish for good in 5 days if you allow the kind warmth of the sun to touch your sore spot every day. Just sit relaxed in a foldable chair for 10 minutes. After a week you will wonder who has stolen your hip bone and muscles! I am telling you of this panacea as a beneficiary since I had experienced hell until my son dragged me up the terrace and now, everyday (except on days of the Vardah cyclone), I have been up there for at least half an hour. Both of us have now turned medical advisors to a number of flatcooped-up people who have ignored the free service provided by our father who art in heaven with love for all the bipeds crawling below holding their painful back. If Sun could speak, he would yell at the poor mutts, You asses, look at the sky which is aglow with beneficial vitamin D you need. All free! Now, I am a sprightly young man of 83 with a back that can bear my weight without bending. Have terraces and good children who open our eyes to the beauty of nature, a salve to soul. Mini bus users rue lack of display of timings Absence of information about departures and erratic operations have become an inconvenience for bus passengers, especially those using mini services. For instance, passengers using the small buses on six routes from Ashok Nagar Metro Station connecting Valasaravakkam, Mahalingapuram, Defence Colony and Koyembedu are clueless about the timings due to lack of display boards in the area. Nesapakkam resident Roselyn, who occasionally takes the Metro, said that she pays Rs. 100 for an autorickshaw in the absence of bus timings in Ashok Nagar Metro Station. The situation is similar at Koyembedu Metro Mtation. As commuters are not aware of the availability of small bus services, they are at the mercy of autorickshaw drivers to reach their destinations. MTC operates more than 200 small buses on around 84 routes across the city linking several areas outside the Corporation s limits. These services largely connect interior localities with bus terminuses and train stations and also link two important bus stops. But irregular timings defeat the purpose of the initiative, which aims to reduce travel time. Rama, a 56-year-old domestic help, shuttles between Kotturpuram, Nandanam, Alwarpet and Greenways Road and uses small buses to get to these localities. The service is very erratic. At times, I have to wait for nearly 90 minutes. Though the bus drops me at my workplace in Greenways Road, it is hard to keep track of the timings, she said. When contacted, MTC officials said that they are taking steps to iron out problems. We have approached Chennai Metro Rail Ltd to display the small bus timings at stations, an MTC official said. Talk on Thiru Arutpa on Tuesday Under the auspices of Vallalar Sanmarga Sangam (V.O.C Street, MGR Nagar, Ph: 94453 43706), Kolapakkam Santhanam will give a discourse on Thiru Arutpa Thiru Arutpavin Maatchimai at 6 p.m on Tuesday, Dec. 27, in Sakthi Vinayagar Temple (P.T. Rajan Salai, K. K. Nagar). By Our Staff Reporter One half of the vacant Corporation building adjoining Siva-Vishnu Temple on Usman Road, T. Nagar collapsed a fortnight back. It is still lying in the same state and the debris is yet to be cleared. A portion of the collapsed structure is resting on the adjacent building which too is in a dilapidated state. Vacant Corporation building on Usman Road collapses Senior cop moved after altercation with inspector The Teynampet Asst. Commissioner of Police has been transferred to the vacancy reserve after he allegedly entered into a fight and exchanged blows with an inspector in Teynampet police station on Dec. 19. The altercation took place after AC Subramanian questioned inspector Chellamuthu and is alleged to have verbally abused him about the slow progress in a case in which miscreants escaped with jewellery from the house of a software engineer in Teynampet last week. According to eyewitnesses, the inspector felt offended and entered into a verbal duel with his senior that then turned ugly and the two exchanged blows. The inspector later lodged a complaint with Police Commissioner S. George. Based on the probe ordered and the report submitted by senior officers, Subramanian was shunted out. Central Crime Branch Asst. Commissioner Kanagaraj has taken charge in place of Subramanian. Axed branches block carriageway of Anna Main Road Manhole cover in 7 th Avenue collapses The manhole cover on 7 th Avenue, near its junction with 49 th Street, Ashok Nagar collapsed at around 2 p.m on Dec. 20. A coconut frond has been placed in the opening to caution motorists. Sabha canteens feel the brunt of demonetisation The sabha canteens in Chennai are a popular destination for music lovers during the Marghazhi music festival. But this year the canteen owners are a disgruntled lot as demonetisation has impacted their business. The response has been lukewarm said a manager of a popular sabha in G. N. Chetty Road. Many just come to feast on the delicacies we offer during this festive season, but this year it has not been very encouraging. We are expecting business to pick up after the 1 st when RBI may pump in a large amount of low currency notes and remove the limitations on withdrawals, he added. Some of the popular items in the neighbourhood sabhas include Kozhukattai and morkali served in the morning in Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, ilai sappadu in the afternoon and onion pakoda and keera vadai in the evening in Vani Mahal, vazhathandu vadai in Chennai Cultural Academy (Karnataka Sangha) and Adai avial in Sri Ramakrishna Mission School (Infosys Hall). Ill effects of mobile tower radiation not proved, says Trai official At a customer outreach program held in Chennai on Dec. 21, Sunil Bajpai, principal adviser to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said harmful effects on humans from the electromagnetic field radiation from cell phone towers have not been proved. He said that while there are several studies on the adverse impact of radiation on humans, little research has been done on how radiation would have positive effects on humans. He further said that the purported evil effects of radiation have created fear among the public on setting up mobile towers which, in turn, is affecting quality of service. Those interested can call 78455 58334 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Corporation s estimate of fallen trees wrong Sir, The Chennai Corporation has announced that it is all set to float tenders to auction an estimated 65,000 tonnes of uprooted trees soon. But with no dedicated weighing bridges in place in dumping sites earmarked for garden garbage, I wonder how the Corporation arrived at this figure. 78 points across the city were earmarked for the public to dump only tree debris. Garden garbage from these points and roadsides were collected and stored in Velachery and Athipatu dumping yards. As per news reports, nearly 900 tonnes of green waste was brought to these sites through 150 trips on a daily basis for the last 15 days. With no weighing bridges in these two dumping yards, the weight noted each day has only been a rough estimate, and it is on this basis that the auction figure has been arrived at since the cyclone. This timber also includes the regular garbage collected and dumped in these yards. Corporation still has to collect a large volume of fallen trees from a number of inner streets in the city that has been lying on the road sides and outside parks. Similarly, some Corporation workers have also dumped unaccounted quantity of timber in Corporation playgrounds and Cooum banks. So the estimate is far from the actual and Corporation, as per the current estimate, is likely to lose a lot of money. R.
