HISTORY OF PLEASANT GROVE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 2-14-1984 Compiled by-hannah Gilbert Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church was established in 1871. Most of the charter members of the newly constituted church.came from Old Cool Springs Methodist Church which was located about three miles east of present church, however, a few of.her first members came by transfer from Andrew's Chapel Methodist Church located near Franklin Gold Mines in Cherokee County, Georgia. The Church is built on a hill in a beautiful grove of oak trees. It is in the North Georgia Conference, Atlanta/ Marietta District, Holbrook Charge which is composed of Pleasant Grove and Macedonia Churches. The Charter Members were: Samuel A. Holbrook Mary J. Holbrook Redd Mahulda C. Holbrook Josiah Redd Hannah T. Holbrook Karr Mary Creamer Nancy L. Creamer L. Bright Monroe Rosetta Creamer Susan A. Monroe Elizabeth Frances Haygood Wilbur Monroe E. Mabry Sara E. Monroe Katherine Mabry Mary A. Chastain John P. Holbrook Amanda S. McDaniel The above Charter members and their descendants should be remembered and held in elevated reverence for their lay leadership in the spiritual growth and development of the Church and Community. The land for this church was donated by two very devout Christians: Samuel Asbury Holbrook-one acre and Milt Echolsthree/forth acre. A few years later William A. Holbrook gave one acre joining this property. In 1949 the Church purchased additional one and six/tenth acre. Ben H. Gilbert donated $500. toward this purchase in memory of his wife Minnie Karr Gilbert. In 1972 the Church purchased 2.76 acres. Total acreage in 1984 seven and one/tenth acre.

The first building erected was small wood structurewithout a steeple. An arbor stood across the yard where campmeeting was held annually for many years. The arbor burned around 1912 and was never rebuilt. The present building was erected in 1928. It is located a short distance and to the Northwest of previous building. The actual cost of this construction is hard to pinpoint since labor and material were donated by members of the church and friend~. Committee was: The building H. Grady Bramblett R. Lee Holbrook Wayne Stewart Arthur Williams J. Roscoe Holbrook Jay Holbrook, Treasurer In 1957 Church School rooms were added and the interior of the building refurbished at which time beautiful memorial windows were placed in the sanctuary. was $6566.00 added. The estimated cost A few years later central heat and air was A Fellowship Hall has been constructed near the church which is used for Church related and community purposes. In June, 1981 the parking area and driveways were paved which was a badly needed project to cover our red clay soil. The Parsonage, which is occupied by the Pastor in charge of Macedonia and Pleasant Grove churches, is located on property of Holbrook Camp Ground on the Cherokee and Fors~th County line. It was remodeled in 1949/50 at a cost of $5000.00 which was shared by the churches on the charge at that time. In 1971 a new parsonage was built (3 bedroom, 2 bath, plus full size basement) at a cost of approximately $20,000.00 which was shared equally by Macedonia and Pleasant Grove churches. A cemetery fund was begun in 1975. The goal set was $6000.00. This amount has been surpasse~. In the earlier days of the church a log cabin shcool house stood at the east side of the present cemetery which indicated that the members were interested in the cultural life of their children. The ladies of our Church began meeting as a group between 1915-1920 under the leadership of Mrs. Onie Holbrook. From the

earliest written records available the Women's Missionary Society at Pleasant Grove was officially organized and chartered in 1925 with about 17 members. The organizational meeting was held on front porch of home of William A. and Onie Holbrook with Mrs. Thigpen from the North Georgia Methodist Conference as Director. Mrs. Maude Karr was elected and served as first President and this group has been active for the past 59 years. Eight (8) of the Charter members are still living (1984)-Ruth Stephens- Geneva Holbrook, Edith Bramblett, Eula Holbrook, Hannah Gilbert, Ruby Holbrook, Dessie Whitt, and Velvie Holbrook. The first written record of Sunday School is June, 1927 which showed an enrollment of 122 members. The church school has always been a very important part of the church services. Much interest is still shown in the study of God's Holy Word. Mid-week services have been held consecutively for many years. Numerous persons have received spiritual blessings and guidance through the prayers, singing of gospel hymns, Bible Study and the proclamation of the Gospel in these services. The Young People have met regularly since the early 1920's. Today the United Methodist Youth Fellowship continues to grow. In 1980 the United Methodist Men was organized under the leadership of Rev. Bill Boggs, with 26 Charter Members. Lanier Gilbert was elected to serve as first President. It has created alot of interest and enthusiasm among our male members. It could rightly be called the "Busy-Bee Club". Singing and playing of instruments have always been a prominent procedure of Praising the Lord in the Church. Many singers and musicians have and still do contribute inspirationally and effectively to the worship service, plus lending their talents to other area churches. Some of our early members, William A. Holbrook; H.W. Holbrook; and R. C. McDaniel were considered outstanding Bibical Scholars in this section of the Country.

Records show our members have a strong sense of Civil responsibility. Two of our members have been elected to represent Forsyth County in Georgia Legislature: R. C. Me Daniel (in the late 1920's) andjay L. Holbrook (1946 to 1947). Hiriam Pledger Holbrook served as Tax Collector in early 1900's. Two members elected and served as County Sheriff: R. Lee Holbrook (1921-1924) and Wesley C. Walraven (1976-198 ); and presently serving Forsyth County as Probate Judge--Joyce Hawkins (1976 198 ). Joyce first filled the unexpired term of her father Broguhton B. Wallace (1969-1976). Many members have taught in the public schools and many have given their time and talents to various other civic and cultural organizations. Pleasant Grove is the home church of Rev. Lawrence Crane member of North Georgia Conference. The late Rev. John Elmer Holbrook served as Pastor in many churches in North Georgia Conference (1927-1954). Rev. Jerry Newton, grandson of member Jim A. Holbrook, is a minister innorth Georgia Conference. Rev. Bill Boggs, son-in-law of member J. Carl & Geneva Holbrook, is a member of North Georgia Conference. Rev. Boggs has served as Pastor of Holbrook (1977-198 ). Rev. Charles Groover, grandson of member Bailey & Pauline Groover, is a member of North Georgia Conference serving in the Dalton District. The late Rev. Jesup Holbrook (1874-1961) joined Pleasant Grove in 1883- moved to Florida and served in the Penecostal Church in Florida Conference until his retirement. He has four grandsons serving as Ministers in the Florida Conference 1984. Rev. Lynn Holbrook, a former member, is a very successful Baptist Minister serving Forsyth and surrounding Counties. James McBrayer and Otis Mason are local home Ministers. It is hoped the present and future leaders of this Church will not lose sight of the fact that the church is a divine institution and will do all in their power ever depending on God's help to maintain the rich heritage that has been entrusted to them. We pray that Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church will continue to be a guiding light and a spiritual blessing to those WRO enter her Holy Sanctuary.
