NEWS 2017 Pastor Drew s Views: A Journey through Lent It s hard to believe, but Lent kicks off on 1 st with Ash Wednesday. The first Sunday of Lent is 5 th. I am looking forward to a new sermon series starting that Sunday called Psalms for the Journey. The series tags along with Lenten devotional many of us will be doing called, A Journey Through Lent put out by Tim Keller and Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City. Let us know if you would like a copy. The 40 days of Lent remind us of Jesus 40 day wilderness experience at the onset of His earthly ministry, and the selected Psalms for the Journey reflect the struggle of our own spiritual journeys and the wilderness experiences we often face as well. These Psalms address the reality of our broken humanity and recognize the world is not as it should be. However, they also point to an end of the story Easter Sunday and the ultimate restoration of all things. May the Psalms this Lent provide the refreshment your parched soul most needs. I hope you will join us in the Journey, Pastor Drew Philippians 1:3-6 3/1 Ash Wednesday with worship at 6 p.m. 3/5 First Sunday of Lent with communion 3/19 PEACE in Griffin Prayer Gathering at Park & 6 th at 5 p.m. 4/9 Palm Sunday with Egg Hunt for kids 4/13 Maundy Thursday with Twelve Men at the Table at 7 p.m. 4/14 Good Friday with reflection and prayer at noon 4/16 Easter Sunday with Easter Sunrise Service at 8 a.m. followed by breakfast Devotional Book A Journey Through Lent devotional is available. The devotional will go along with Pastor Drew s sermon series called Psalms for the Journey. These books are available in the church office for a contribution of $3.00

Christian Education Church-wide Memory Verse Our monthly memory verse always corresponds with the lesson and verse the children are learning in Hope Town each Sunday Morning. We are teaching the children to revere God's Word by standing to read and recite it. This month we turn to the Psalms: "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you." Psalm 56:3 Please join us in memorizing our verse each month. Come Home to Hope Town This month in Sunday school, we're taking the kids for a sail on the Sea of Galilee. Around the Sea of Galilee is where Jesus spent much of His public life and ministry. This sea was known for sudden and violent storms even when the sky was clear. Jesus has been teaching and healing and casting out demons and He is tired. Soon after Jesus and the disciples set sail, Jesus moved to the stern of the boat and fell asleep. The storm begins, suddenly and violently. The disciples, afraid for their lives, wake the peacefully sleeping Jesus asking, "Do You not care if we die?" The first thing Jesus does is silence and calm the storm. He demonstrates His absolute power over nature in this miracle. Next, He turns His attention to the Disciples. Their lack of faith and their fear stand in startling contrast to Jesus's absolute trust and peace. Finally, they must answer the same question we must all answer, "Who is Jesus?" This is a great miracle to explore as we get ready to dive into the miracle of Easter. You don't want to miss a single week! New Adult Sunday School Study Reminders for parents Please remember to sign your children in and out of Sunday school each Sunday. We are doing this to ensure that as visitors bring their children, they will feel confident entrusting us with their children. Additionally, please bring the number you are given back and collect your kids by 9:45 so the teachers can prepare for worship. Thanks so much for your cooperation, The Christian Education Ministry Team. The Bledsoe Sunday school class will begin a new study on February 26 titled A Journey Through Lent. It will be a combination of a DVD and discussion series by Tim Keller. Each week, we will look at a Psalm and how it relates to the reality of our broken humanity as well as how it points to Easter Sunday. We will learn how the soul is refreshed through repentance, rest, security and hope. Join us as we seek to ready our hearts to remember Christ's death and resurrection. Mission & Outreach Jesus said Go! so we go, Feed! so we feed, Make disciples so we make disciples in His Name. The church is a hospital for sinners and a launching pad for missional service in our community and to the ends of the earth. Here are some opportunities to serve together with agape love (sign ups in the Narthex or just call the church office): Abundant Life Soup Kitchen We will serve together again at the soup kitchen on Wednesday, 3/21 from 10:30 a.m. 1 p.m. If you haven t tried this yet, it is a great opportunity to serve in our community with the love of Christ and also get the word out about who we are. Look for sign ups in the Narthex beginning 12th. PEACE in Griffin Prayer Gathering at Park and 6 th This world needs PEACE and the best way to find it is through prayer. Griffin churches will gather with community leaders at Park and 6 th on Sunday, 19 th at 5 p.m. Let s gather together to show our community (and the world) the only way to save it! A community choir with youth and adults will be featured. Teddy Bear Ministry Facing the Darkness Facing the Darkness is a Samaritan s Purse film about saving Dr. Brantley from Ebola in Africa. The movie will be showing at McDonough Stadium 16 and Tinseltown USA Fayetteville for one night only on Thursday, 30th. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOXES DON T FORGET TO LOOK FOR SHOEBOX ITEMS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR!! Go to samaritanspurse.org Click on Operation Christmas Child Scroll to the bottom of the page, find Resources and Click on Year-round Packing Ideas 11.5 million shoeboxes were collected last year! They are now in the process of handing them out through church partners in 113 countries. We have Teddy Bears sitting on the front pew in the sanctuary. Please take (and replace) a bear to give away as an expression of love from our church! 2 3

Griffin Bible Study Griffin Bible study, which meets here at the church on Wednesday mornings at 9:30, is starting a new study on 29th. We will be studying the letters of 1, 2, & 3 John. We will be listening to videos by Kelly Minter. Here is a summary of the study: "The letters of 1, 2 & 3 John were written to encourage followers of Jesus to remain faithful to the truth. Believers are challenged to look at contrasting themes such as walking in the light instead of darkness, truth versus lies and deception, loving God more than loving the world, and the meaning of true fellowship and community rather than shallowness. This 7 session study reveals not only the heart of John but also the heart of Jesus." It sounds like a great study and it would be a great time to jump in and join us in studying God's word! Dear Pastor Drew and congregation, Special Notes I m so sorry to have taken so long to express my gratitude to you... I pray that you don t misinterpret the belatedness of this thank you as a lack of appreciation for I was and continue to be deeply grateful. The, care and compassion we felt from you, the church staff and congregation was such a ministry to me at 2 of the most difficult times of my life. Please convey my thanks to everyone... We felt surrounded and uplifted with His love through your ministry to us. With a grateful heart, Carole Roddy and family (Freddie Hutson s daughter) Wednesday Mornings starting 29th at 9:30 a.m. 4 5
