Lent and Easter LENT & EASTER Lent 2019: The God Question Science, God and the Search for Truth Can science and faith exist well together? The greatest challenge to belief is often thought to come from science. This series investigates whether 21st century science supports or removes the case for a creator. Each session begins with video input in which prominent atheists and theists take a scientific journey and debate the case for God. Tutor: Dr Paul Pritchard Venue: The Parliament Suite Our focus for this weekend will be 5th c. Athenian theatre in all its forms. After discussing the social context and the venue in which the plays were performed, we ll take in Plato s attack on the theatre and Aristotle s defence. Thus warned and maybe reassured, we ll go on to read from some of the tragedies about Oedipus and his family. We ll also look at an example of a Satyr play, and Homer s use of what later became elements of Athenian tragedy. Finally, we ll read from Aristophanes comedy Frogs, in which two of Athens greatest tragedians are made to go head-to-head in a line-for-line duel in Hell. No previous knowledge is required, and all texts are translated into English. Course fee: 100.00 ( 75.00 unwaged). Expert tutors will combine a short tour of the Cathedral with collection handling sessions (artefacts provided by the Gloucestershire Archaeology Service), a mini sandpit dig and a craft activity to really have fun whilst learning! These sessions are designed to encourage adults and children to learn together to boost confidence and improve communication whilst also developing numeracy and literacy skills. learn about carving and masonry Relief Stone Carving Course Events MARCH Saturday 2 & Sunday 3 March and Saturday 30 & Sunday 31 March 9.00am - 4.00pm Relief Stone Carving Course Gloucester Cathedral s Stonemasons Yard, Pitt Street Held over two weekends, local artist and sculptor Ann-Margreth Bohl will lead this four-day course that gives participants the opportunity to learn techniques to create a relief carving. Participants will learn about carving and masonry on bespoke Cathedral tours and carve their own relief piece, inspired by designs in the Cathedral Crypt. Relief carving is a technique between 2D and 3D carving, made up of sculpted elements which remain attached to a solid background and is a good introduction to sculpture. The course is aimed at beginners and those with some experience in stone carving. Over the two weekends participants will: draw from an original relief create a model transfer measurements from the model to a block of stone carve a relief sculpture to take home All materials and tools provided (with the option to purchase tools at the end of the course). Arriving by Public Transport The Cathedral is located in Gloucester Town Centre and is located within easy reach of the main railway and bus station. It is a 10-15 minute steady walk. Look out for Finger sign posts that will point you in the right direction. There are several public car parks within easy walking distance of the Cathedral.
