2 Welcome to St. Margaret Mary Parish From A Grateful Heart : For many, as I have often told you and now tell you even in tears, conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction. Their God is their stomach; their glory is in their "shame." Their minds are occupied with earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ." (Philippians 3:17 4:1) When we realize who Jesus is, do we fail to find the right words? Jesus takes Peter, James and John (his inner circle) up the mountain and is Transfigured in His glory between Moses and Elijah as they talk to him. Peter is dumb-founded! He stammers with the hope of honoring this moment and fails to find the words to express the awe in what he has just witnessed! Words fail to express this theological moment of Jesus revelation so the disciples try to put into human opinion the explanation of a theological truth. Doctrine will later be formed by the Church to express this wonder. But, for the time being, Peter uses his personal thoughts to express a doctrinal truth of God. Language has the job of giving a word to every idea or expression, whether in fact or thought. Often these are nouns. A noun puts a name to a perceived thing. The English word noun comes from the Latin word meaning to name. A person, place, thing or idea is given a name in order to discuss or describe what language needs to share. I have always tried to find new words to give expression to my thoughts. That is one reason I love listening to Bishop Robert Barron. He has a capacious vocabulary to elucidate his every cognition! Now that is a mouthful!! What Peter has done to give a personal imagination to Jesus revealing of a Theological Doctrine (e.g., that He is fully God and fully Human, proved by his transfiguring), has a word to describe it!
