The password for the guest network is johncalvin Announcements As a Reformed church, Presbyterians approach Lent as a time to become more committed to practicing their faith rather than giving up something. To help us do that as a community of followers, Richard J. Foster s, Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth, will serve as our guide for growing in the Spirit during this Lenten and Eastertide season. Meeting in Hollis Hall, come join the journey each Sunday at 9:15 a.m. This year we invite you to give to One Great Hour of Sharing a denomination wide mission effort that raises money for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, hunger programs, and cooperative development work with communities experiencing poverty around the world. Make a gift through the website or leave a check with One Great Hour of Sharing in the memo line. We will receive collections for this special offering through Easter.

SUNDAY, MARCH 10, 2019 PRELUDE Aus der Tiefe rufe ich Out of the depths I cry, Lord, to Thee C.P.E. Bach (1714-1788) WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. THE GREETING At the sound of the bells, please prepare your heart and mind for worship. INTROIT Processional Psalm for Lent *CALL TO WORSHIP Is not this the fast I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice; To share your bread with the hungry; To bring the homeless and poor into your house; When you see the naked, to clothe them? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, And your healing shall spring up quickly. your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am. R. Proulx (1937-2010) Sally Burran *UNISON PRAYER OF INVOCATION Gracious God, lead us through wilderness ways: through distance and distraction; through apathy and closed-mindedness; through sadness and sin; through the obstacles of life and the things that hold us back from you. Encourage us by your Spirit into a place of worship that we would discover you in our midst, that we would recognize your guiding hand, and that we would be changed, in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. *HYMN 65 Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah Cwm Rhondda Cover Art: Kramskoĭ, Ivan Nikolaevich, 1837-1887. Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. The Introit is from Psalm 130. The Call to Worship is from Isaiah 58:6-9. *Where you see this notation, please rise in body or in spirit.

SCRIPTURE LESSON Romans 10:8b-13 NRSV 8b The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. 11 The scripture says, No one who believes in him will be put to shame. 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. 13 For, Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM Ave Verum Corpus SCRIPTURE LESSON Luke 4:1-13 W. Byrd (1538-1623) NRSV 1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. 3 The devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread. 4 Jesus answered him, It is written, One does not live by bread alone. 5 Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And the devil said to him, To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours. 8 Jesus answered him, It is written, Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him. 9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written, He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you, 11 and On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone. 12 Jesus answered him, It is said, Do not put the Lord your God to the test. 13 When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Anthem: Ave verum corpus, Natum de Maria virgine; Vere passum immolatum In crucis pro homine. Cuius latus perforatum Unda fluxit sanguine. Esto nobis praegustatum In mortis examine. O dulcis, o pie, O Jesu Fili Mariae, Miserere mei. Amen. Translation: Hail, true body, Born of the virgin Mary; Who has truly suffered, slaughtered on the Cross for humanity. Whose side was pierced, Pouring out water and blood. Be a foretaste for us During our ordeal of death. O sweet, o holy, O Jesus Son of Mary, Have mercy on me. Amen. SERMON Worship the Lord your God *HYMN 166 Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days Rev. Will Scott St. Flavian

Affirmation of Faith: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. The Lord s Prayer: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Lord in your mercy Hear our prayer. THE LORD S PRAYER THE OFFERING OFFERTORY Meditation: Love Unknown *DOXOLOGY Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
