Page 2 READINGS FOR SUNDAY, MARCH 10, 2019 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT First Reading: Deuteronomy 26:4-10 Second Reading: Romans 10:8-13 Gospel: Luke 4:1-13 FOCUS: Jesus Christ freed us from the slavery of sin. As we begin Lent, our penance and fasts seem rather small in comparison with how Jesus suffered for our salvation. Our forty days does not quite compare to his forty days in the desert. We need only to call on Jesus, and he will deliver us from our sins. Each Lent presents a new opportunity to repent and grow in our relationship with the One who gave his all so we could be his. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses instructs the people to offer gifts to the Lord for their freedom from slavery in Egypt, and for God s never-ending care. In his Letter to the Romans, Paul reminds his readers that without any distinction of nationality, all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved. Luke s Gospel tells how Jesus withstood the temptations of the devil. Readings for next week, March 17, Second Sunday of Lent: Genesis 15:5-12, 17-18; Philippians 3:17 4:1 or 3:20 4:1; Luke 9:28b-36 FOSTERING STEWARDSHIP AS A WAY OF LIFE PARISH SACRIFICIAL GIVING As we enter this Lenten season let us allow God into our weaknesses to break us free from all temptations. We cannot defeat sin alone, only God can do that. We need to let God into our lives and clean up the mess within us. Be open to Him in prayer, be yourself and be vulnerable to His Love. Page 3 From the Desk of Father Valentine Dear Friends: I would like to offer a brief word of thanks to everyone in the parish family of St. Mary s, Roslyn, for your warm welcome and kind generosity upon my arrival. I mentioned at Mass this week that I have served in a number of assignments over the past few years. And why not? The Spirit blows where it wishes (John 3:8); still, I like to think of St. Mary s as the safe harbor that follows a lengthy sojourn. Here s hoping that we will enjoy a long, happy collaboration as we seek to do God s will. I would be remiss were I not to acknowledge the loving guidance and prudent leadership of Fr. John McCartney, who has shepherded St. Mary s for lo these past six years. He left God s House in good order, and I am grateful that his stewardship has made possible for me a smooth and efficient transition. Over the course of the next few months, please be assured that, with a few minor exceptions (note the new confession schedule) we will continue the Mass and event schedules as they are. It seems good to get a feel for the rhythm of the community, and keep things as undisturbed as possible. That said, in the near future we will organize various forums for people to express their hopes for the future of our parish. Based on that feedback, we will proceed with the programs that best assist us as we continue the mission of St. Mary s. In the meantime, I am reminded of the words of St. Augustine: With you, I am a fellow Christian; for you, I am a bishop. In this case, we can substitute the term shepherd for bishop. We all share a common vocation as Disciples of Christ. Pray for me as I begin my new duties here. It s great to be on the team! Faithfully, Fr. Valentine

Page 4 LENTEN SCHEDULE The penitential Season of Lent began on Ash Wednesday and ends with the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday. Lent has six Sundays; the sixth of which is called Passion or Palm Sunday and marks the beginning of Holy Week. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics (14 years and older) on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting means limiting oneself to one full meal on a given fast day. Catholics who are between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On fast days, two additional smaller meals are permitted. However, the two smaller meals together should not equal one full meal. The schedule of services for Lent is as follows: Daily Mass Monday through Friday at 9:00 AM ~ Church Stations of the Cross After the 9:00 a.m. Mass ~ Church Friday, March 8 Friday, March 15 Friday, March 22 Thursday, March 28 Thursday, April 4 Thursday, April 11 Confessions Saturdays of Lent: 3:45-4:45 p.m. ~ Hall Monday, April 15 - Diocesan Day of Penance: 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. ~ Church
