Emmanuel College Chapel The Chapel exists as a centre for Christian life and worship. It stands in the centre of the College as a reminder of the spiritual dimension to life, whether we are conventionally religious or not. All members of the College and their friends are very welcome at its services, and are invited to share in its activities. Regular Services Sunday 11 am The Eucharist The Eucharist is the distinctive act of the Christian community. In it the scriptures are read and expounded and the central events of Jesus death and resurrection are re-presented in bread and wine. After the service members of the congregation go into Hall for brunch. Sunday 6 pm Evensong Evensong is service of words words sung, prayed, read and preached. It is the traditional service for evening and is led by the Choir. It includes a sermon, often given by a visitor to the College, designed to promote thoughtful reflection on the Christian Faith and the issues that it raises. The service is followed by drinks in C2, where there will be a chance to meet the preacher. Thursday 6 pm Sung Eucharist A meditative service led by the choir. There is a short sermon and the service lasts about 45 minutes, finishing before the end of informal hall. Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer Morning Prayer is said each weekday at 8.30am and Evening Prayer is said at 6pm (except on Tuesdays and Thursdays). Compline Compline is an atmospheric candlelit service for late evening. It will be sung twice this term on Wednesday evenings at 10pm.

The theme of the sermons at Evensong on Sundays this term is Songs of the Bible Singing, and in particular singing praise to God, is central to the life of faith. Unsurprisingly the Bible is full of songs that different people sing in different circumstances and for different reasons. In the Psalms we have a whole book of such songs. Each sermon is accompanied by the world premiere of a piece that has been specially commissioned from a variety of composers to go with these songs. Thursday 24th January, 6 pm Sung Eucharist with the Harvard University Choir The Choir will be singing jointly with the Harvard University Choir. Their conductor Edward Elwyn Jones a former Emmanuel Organ Scholar. Thursday 31st January, 6 pm Corporate Eucharist for Candlemas The Feast of Candlemas, the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, marks the end of the forty days of celebration that follows Christmas and a turning towards the forty days of Lent that leads up to the commemoration of Christ s passion, death and resurrection. We celebrate with the candles that give the day its name and we follow the service with a buffet supper. Tuesday 5th March, 7 pm Shrove Tuesday Pancakes Pancakes are traditionally eaten on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent starts. Everyone is welcome to a selection of sweet and savoury pancakes.

Wednesday 6th March, 6 pm Ash Wednesday We mark the beginning of Lent with a solemn and reflective service and the imposition of ashes. The Choir will sing Byrd s Mass for Five Voices. Collections this term will be given to Aiducation a student run charity that funds school education in Kenya and the Philippines. Seven New Anthems Accompanying each of our evensong sermons about Songs of the Bible will be the world premieres of seven new anthems commissioned specially from contemporary composers. 20 January a light Oscar Ridout 27 January Psalm 137 Phoebe McFarlane 3 February Psalm 46 Ben Rowarth 10 February The Song of Hannah Emma-Ruth Richards 17 February Rise, rise thou, Peter Foggitt Deborah 24 February A Song of Humility Joshua Balance 3 March A Song of Christ s Glory Grace-Evangeline Mason
