Our Savior Lutheran Church 8001 Northwest 5 th Street Plantation, Florida 33324 Rev. Tony Durante, Pastor Serving Christ-Serving Others-Changing Lives ASH WEDNESDAY March 6, 2019 Preparation for Worship The imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday is a sign of mortality and death. On this first day of Lent, we enter the season with an extended time of repentance and confession of sin. We reflect on Jesus holy Passion as we hear the account of His journey to the cross culminating in His suffering and death. We pray that our Lord might bless this time of penitence and reflection as we await His resurrection. Please take a minute to fill in your Connection Card. ASH WEDNESDAY Due to the solemn character of the day, pre-service music is omitted. The pastor enters in silence. (P=pastor, L=liturgist, C=congregation, R=reader, A=cantor) Please stand Opening Hymn Savior, When in Dust to Thee 4

5 Public domain Invocation L In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. L Dear people of God, it was the custom in the early Church to prepare for the resurrection of our Lord with deep devotion. Believers were invited to perform acts of devotion that included prayer, fasting, and increased private meditation. Today and throughout the Lenten season we will be reminded of the message of pardon and absolution proclaimed in the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I invite you to observe this season of Lent by repentance; prayer, and fasting. This is a time for the reading and meditating on God's holy Word. Let us come together as we humble ourselves before the Lord, our maker and redeemer. Litany of Confession (Please kneel) L Let us pray. Almighty God, our maker and redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. C O most merciful God, who has given Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. L Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Please stand

Create in Me 6 Public domain Salutation and Collect of the Day L The Lord be with you. C And also with you. L Let us pray. L Heavenly Father, through trouble we know Your love. In hardship You treat us as sons. As we come to You in ashes create in us pure hearts and renew a right Spirit with in us that we might have the joy of Your salvation through Jesus Christ, Your Son our Lord. C Amen. (Come forward as directed by Pastor to receive ashes) THE IMPOSITION OF ASHES [The imposition is made in the shape of a cross with the words, "Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return."] Please be seated Old Testament Reading Job 1:13-22 One day when Job s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, 15 and the Sabeans attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you! 16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you! 17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept

down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you! 18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother s house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you! 20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21 and said: Naked I came from my mother s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised. 22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing. R This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Epistle Reading Hebrews 12:7-11 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined and everyone undergoes discipline then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. R This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Please stand L The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 13 th chapter, verses 13:3-9, 18-23 C Glory to You, O Lord. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear. 18 Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. L This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. 7

The Apostles Creed L Let us with one voice confess our faith saying The Apostles' Creed C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. Please be seated Song of the Day 12:15 Great is Thy Faithfulness Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no shadow of turning with Thee. Thou changest not; Thy compassions, they fail not; As Thou hast been, thou forever wilt be. (Refrain) Refrain: Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see: All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above Join with all nature in manifold witness To Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. (Refrain) Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! (Refrain) 8

Sermon Job 2 On another day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them to present himself before him. 2 And the Lord said to Satan, Where have you come from? Satan answered the Lord, From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it. 3 Then the Lord said to Satan, Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason. 4 Skin for skin! Satan replied. A man will give all he has for his own life. 5 But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face. 6 The Lord said to Satan, Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life. 7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. 8 Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes. 9 His wife said to him, Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die! 10 He replied, You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble? Offering and Musical Offering (choir) Ashes Tom Conry Offertory Please stand Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav nly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Ash Wednesday Collect L Almighty and everlasting God, You despise nothing You have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent. Create in us new and contrite hearts and lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness we may receive from You full pardon and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. The Lord s Prayer L Lord, remember us in Your Kingdom and teach us to pray. C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Benediction 10
