A Message from: Sister Mary Alyce September MARCH 10, 16, 2019 2018 During the 10:00 Mass this weekend, Julianna Bresko and Dawn Marie Estrate were formally enrolled as Catechumens in the Catholic Church. Bishop Murry will accept their Enrollment this afternoon at St. Columba Cathedral, along with about 100 other Catechumens (those receiving Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist) and Candidates (those receiving First Eucharist and/or Confirmation) from all the parishes in the diocese. There will also be another Rite of Election this evening in Canton for those living in Stark and Portage Counties. Let us continue to pray for Julianna and Dawn throughout Lent that they may be open to accept the call of the Gospel to be faithful followers of Jesus. They will receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. Just a few more points concerning the Bishop s Appeal. If you already volunteer in a ministry at Saint Luke Church, and there are many of you, please indicate this on the form by changing the words I would like to volunteer to I already volunteer, and list the committees or ministries. If you are able to make a one-time financial contribution (or a pledge) to the Bishop s Appeal, please indicate this on the envelope, also. The money collected in the diocesan Bishop s Appeal helps to support many diocesan ministries. Among them, Catholic Charities, Office of Pro-Life, Marriage and Family Ministry, Office of Vocations, Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Office of the Tribunal, Seminarian Formation, Catholic Network of Youngstown, Office of Religious Education, Office of Evangelization and Lay Formation, Office of Social Concerns. At various times, Saint Luke Parish and Parishioners receive services from one or another of these offices. The support of these departments is dependent on ALL OF THE PAR- ISHES of the diocese sharing the costs. Please return your Bishop s Appeal envelope in the collection basket or mail it directly to the diocese. Thank you to all who supported the Saint Luke Mardi Gras last Saturday. The spirit of fun was palpable! Thank you to Sonny and his friends and business associates who were a big part of the success of the event with the pasta, wings and beer set-ups and gift baskets. Thank you to all who attended and who helped in any way: pre-mardi Gras planning/ preparation, set-up, clean-up, cupcake bakers, cheese and vegetable trays, sausage and peppers. Final figures for profit won t be available for another week or so. This event is a major financial boost to the parish. Mark your calendars for February 22, 2020. Thank you to all who supported the Holy Land ministry by purchasing religious items this weekend. In mid-february a letter was sent to all parishioners who did not respond to the first invitation to participate in the Vision 20/10 Campaign in the parish. Our goal was to get 100% response rate from all registered parishioners. To date we have received an additional 25 Vision 20/20 Response cards back from this second mailing. Thank you to all who responded. You are invited to join with The Ursuline Sisters on Tuesday, March 19 from 7-8:30 p.m., when the Ursuline Education & Wellness Center welcomes Fr. George M. Smiga for "Surprise, Shock, & Gospel: Reinterpreting the Parables of Jesus." There's no cost to attend, but free will offerings will be accepted. Fr. Smiga is a national speaker, pastor at St. Noel Church in Willoughby, professor at St. Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology, Cleveland, and an author. He is an excellent storyteller and speaker. The 13-week novena to St. Anthony begins on Tuesday, March 19. Saint Luke Parish will pray the Novena prayers after the mass each Tuesday until June 11. The Feast of St. Anthony is Thursday, June 13. There will be a St. Anthony Feast Day mass at on June 13, also. All are welcome to some or all of the novena weekly prayers. Until next time Sister Mary Alyce CHANGE OF ADDRESS: It is important to notify the parish if you have moved or left the parish. Each time a packet of contribution envelopes is returned to the parish office by the postal service the church incurs a $1.24 expense. You may call the parish office or email any household status changes to saintlukes@zoominternet.net. IF YOU ARE ENTERING AN ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY OR NURSING HOME or know of a parishioner who entered either, please call the parish office. We will gladly share your name with our deacons who attempt to visit regularly. PLEASE REMEMBER TO SILENCE YOUR PHONE RINGER WHEN ENTERING THE WORSHIP SPACE.

(Deuteronomy 26:10) This line from the Old Testament offers two challenges. First, do you give to God from your first fruits, the best that you have to offer, or do you give from what is leftover? Second, do you recognize that everything you have has been given to you by God? Ask God for a grateful and generous heart, every day, in all circumstances. VOCATIONS: In the same way that the devil tempted Jesus to turn away from His Father, so he tempts us to turn away from the path God calls us to follow. Like Christ, push the devil aside so that the way of God wins out. As temptations fall away, consider how God may be calling you to serve in a religious community, as a priest or as a deacon. For help with your discernment contact Fr. Christopher Luoni at (330) 7448451 or by email: cluoni@youngstowndiocese.org. For all men and women being chosen by Christ to follow Him as priests, deacons, sisters and brothers, that they will persevere in the face of temptations against faithfulness to their call, we pray to the Lord. Please call MaryAnn Dulay at the parish office if you would like to schedule any of the above listed. Please pray for our Christian Initiation Catechumens as they continue their Catholic faith formation sessions that will end at the Easter Vigil on Saturday, April 20th. Julianna Bresko Dawn Estrate A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar Jesus was led by the Spirit in the wilderness. What is the wilderness in your life to which the Holy Spirit is leading you this Lent? Perhaps there are uncharted areas in your marriage or family relationships. Spend this Lent in your wilderness with God. Where is the Spirit leading you this Lent? Something to think about this week Growth is painful. Change is painful. But nothing is more painful as staying stuck somewhere you don t belong. Mandy Hale SAINT LUKE BOCCE LEAGUE will meet on Tuesday, March 19th at 6pm at the Fireplace. RSVP Bill Schiraldi at 330-726-6079. OFFICE SPACE FOR RENT: Two adjoining rooms, can be separated. LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE: Catholics traditionally observe the penitential season of Lent through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. In regard to fasting, Catholics in the United States who are 14 and older are to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during the season of Lent. Those who are between the ages of 18 and 59 are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In keeping with the penitential nature of the season voluntary fasting on the other weekdays of Lent is encouraged. The law of fast prescribes that only one full meal a day may be taken. Two lighter meals are permitted. Eating between meals is not permitted but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are permitted. As we continue on our journey into the desert with Jesus for Forty Days to find our true selves again in him, to deepen our faith in him and to die and rise with him to a new level of life, Saint Luke Parish offers these opportunities to grow in spirit: Reconciliation every Wednesday following the 5:30pm Mass. Wednesday Evening Mass: Mass will be celebrated at 5:30. Additional opportunities listed in upcoming bulletins. Soup Suppers every Wednesday evening in the Martha and Mary Room at 6pm. Stations of the Cross every Friday during Lent at 6pm in the Church. Saint Anthony Novena following the 8am Mass on Tuesdays beginning March 19th. Please make time for this sacred time of the year! On Wednesdays of Lent, we will have our Soup Suppers in the Martha and Mary Room, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Why not volunteer to bring a pot of soup or a loaf of bread to share. Bring the family, your place settings, and put the money saved on dinner in your Rice Bowl. CRS RICE BOWL: In Guatemala, we encounter Norma, who as a young mother supports her family and shares her skills with her community. SAINT ANTHONY NOVENA: A Novena in Roman Catholic practice is a period of time specifically put aside to pray for particular needs, asking God s direction and help in those needs. The first Novena is rooted in sacred scripture, in the Acts of the Apostles, as the Apostles and Mary the Mother of Jesus waited and prayed together in the upper room after Christ s ascension into heaven until the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. The Latin word Novena means nine and refers to that prayerful waiting of nine days for the outpouring of God s spirit. Saint Anthony of Padua, the Franciscan priest who served the poor, challenged the corrupt, preached the Gospel with power and by God s grace worked miracles of conversion and healing, passed into eternal life on Tuesday, June 13th, 1231A.D. and so instead of nine days, a novena in honor of Saint Anthony is held for thirteen Tuesdays. Our Saint Anthony Novena this year begins on Tuesday, March 19th. Bring a specific intention and focus on it in prayer with Saint Anthony for thirteen Tuesdays and trust that God will answer in God s mysterious but perfect way! The Novena will be held in Saint Luke Church in the morning after the 8am Mass and in Saint Charles Church in the evening after the 6pm Mass. Pease come! Rise Up, O Men of God It s not too late to register and join the men of the Diocese of Youngstown at our Annual Catholic Men s Conference on Saturday, March 23, 2019. 9:00 a.m. start with closing with mass at 4:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Parish Mission Statement We are members of Saint Luke Parish, a Roman Catholic Christian Community of Faith within the Diocese of Youngstown. We are deeply rooted in both Scripture and Tradition. Born in Baptism and sustained by the celebration of the Eucharist, we embrace our life in Christ through prayer and sacrament, service and outreach, proclamation of the Word and formation in faith. Guided by the Holy Spirit and motivated by our love of God and of all people, we are both sign and an instrument of the Kingdom of Promise. Our unique blessing and gift is that we are a parish family which creates a warm and welcoming worship environment and participates fully in the planning and celebration of the Liturgy.
