D. Shivers, and Minister E. R. Shivers Proverbs 11:3 The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them. Bobby Jones was one of the greatest golfers to ever compete, uniquely known for winning the "Grand Slam" of golf winning all four major tournaments in the U.S. and Britain in a single year. In 1925, early in his career, having reached the final playoff in the U.S. Open, at a certain point in the match, Jones was setting up to strike his ball which was in the rough just off the fairway. His iron accidentally touched the ball. He immediately became angry with himself, turned to the marshals, and called a penalty on himself. But the marshals had not seen the ball move, so they left the decision to Jones, whether to invoke the penalty a two-stroke penalty. Bobby called the penalty on himself, not knowing that he would lose the tournament by a single stroke. When praised for his honesty, he replied, "You may as well praise a man for not robbing a bank!" Jones may have lost the tournament, but his character was legendary and today the United States Golf Association's award for sportsmanship is known as the "Bobby Jones Award. It's been said, "Character is what you do when nobody is watching. Character is how you treat people who can do absolutely nothing for you. Character is how you react when the pressure is on. Character is deciding beforehand that you are going to do the right thing. Every day we're faced with decisions many of which are made when no one is watching, at least no one we can see. But let's purpose in our hearts to do the right thing because character truly counts. We may not see the dividends immediately but be assured that God is keeping track of our decisions, and He will make good on every one.

Yearly Reading Plan and Daily Devotion Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby. (1 Peter 2:2) If you haven t begun this one year reading program of the New Testament, it is never too late! Come on and jump on board! This plan is designed to help us not only read through the new Testament in a year, but to help us apply God s word to our everyday life and develope a deeper relationship with our Heavenly Father. Since this plan includes only the New Testament, each segment can be read in 5-8 minutes, and will allow you the opportunity to actually study the portion of Scripture you are reading, instead of reading only If you choose to dig deeper, (and hopefully you will!), a 20-30 minute/day study can increase your knowledge of the Bible as well as your love for the Lord. The goal should not be quantity (how much you read), but quality in what you read, learn and apply. The reading plan is divided into 52 weeks, with readings for each day. Follow these steps in Bible study: Pray - confess sins before you begin; ask for the Holy Spirit's illumination of God's Word Observe - read the text over & over (repetition); take notes, ask questions Study - underline key words and/or phrases. Ask, "What is the passage saying?" Evaluate - cross-reference the text with other portions of Scripture. Find what others have said about the text (commentaries, Bible dictionaries) Meditate - what principle or command can be applied? Is there a promise or basic doctrinal truth to lay hold of? Remember, DO what you have learned. Dose of Laughter The Children of Israel Mr. Goldblatt," announced little Joey, "there's somethin' I can't figger out." "What's that Joey?" asked Goldblatt. "Well accordin' to the Bible, the Children of Israel crossed the Red Sea, right?" "Right." "An' the Children of Israel beat up the Phillistines, right?" "Er--right." "An' the Children of Israel built the Temple, right?" "Again you're right." "An' the Children of Israel fought the 'gyptians, an' the Children of Israel fought the Romans, an' the Children of Israel wuz always doin' somethin' important, right?" "All that is right, too," agreed Goldblatt. "So what's your question?" "What I wanna know is this," demanded Joey. "What was all the grown-ups doing?" Whose Dad is the most talented 3 kids are sitting on the curb, the first one says "guess what? my dad is so talented he writes stuff down on paper calls it a poem and they send him $100 for it!" the second kid says "oh yeah? my dad is so talented he draws squiggly lines on a notebook calls it art and they give him $300 for it!" "that's nothin" the 3rd kid says, "my dad writes some words down calls it a sermon, and it takes five guys to collect all the money!" Devotional Back To School II Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. New clothes are in the closet, and the books and backpacks are out and ready to go. Summer vacation is over and it s back to school! Weeks of summer pleasure gave young minds a chance to rest, but now it s back to work. It s time to study again. There is one book that we should never get tired of studying and learning from. That, of course, is The Holy Bible. Sixty-six books in one, this text gives us history, poetry, prophecy, and doctrine. From Genesis to Revelation the continuous story of man s relationship to God and His plan for redemption unfolds. This incredible book provides great mystery and at the same time delivers unalterable truth penned under the inspiration of God by forty-four writers spanning over twenty centuries of time. Though written thousands of years ago, the Bible clearly presents God s commands for successful living and wisdom for every step of life s journey. And these truths are as relevant today as they were the day they were recorded. When was the last time you really took the time to dig in and study God s Word? Did the busyness of summer cause you to slack off of your study of God s Word? Vacations? Travel? Kids at home? Extra outside work? No matter what the season, there are plenty of things to distract you and keep you from studying, but it s time to put away the excuses and get into the Word. As fall arrives, I encourage you look around and find a good Bible study group and dig in. Mark it on your calendar and make that study a part of your regular routine. If you do, you ll experience fresh blessings from your Heavenly Father, and the fun and fellowship of meeting with other believers. What are you waiting for? It s time to study! Prayer for the month: Precious Lord, Your Word is my source of strength and wisdom. Let me never be so unwise as to think that I know enough of it. Let me never neglect studying it. Let me never stop loving it. In Jesus name, amen.

Points to Ponder There is no test of faith so true as the grace of thanksgiving. Are you praising God enough? Are you thanking Him for your actual blessings that are more than can be numbered, and are you daring to praise Him even for those trials which are but blessings in disguise? Have you learned to praise Him in advance for the things that have not yet come? - Anonymous " A man ought to live so that everybody knows he is a Christian...and most of all, his family ought to know.." - Dwight L. Moody There is a battle going on for the minds of people. We do need to be alert to the devil's schemes and subtle teachings that masquerade as truth in our society. But the way to resist such mental error is not with emotional diatribes. Instead there needs to be a clear understanding of the Bible's teaching about demonicerror, accompanied by a committed submission to the commands of scripture. - Gary R. September 13, 2011 Edith Shivers! Celebrate our Leading Lady this month!

Back to school Tips 1. Get Enough Sleep. (Rest in the Lord) As parents we all know the benefits of getting our children to bed early on a school night. They need that added rest in order to get up early in the morning. A good night's sleep will work wonders on your attitude the next day and it will help your whole disposition. Resting in the Lord will also make you fit and ready for the day. It will recharge you. "Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him..." Psalm 37:7 2. Get a Healthy Breakfast. (Have Prayer and Bible Study) The experts all agree that giving a child breakfast before school helps in knowledge retention, test scores, and overall learning. As Christians we need to get a healthy breakfast of Bible study and prayer. Having some type of personal devotions will fuel you for the day. My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. Psalm 5:3 3. Follow The Rules. (Use the Bible as Your Guide) School couldn't be productive if it weren't for the rules. We can all remember some of the basics. No fighting. No talking during class. No chewing gum. As Christians we have the best rule book of all. It covers all of the basics. We need to use it as a guide on a daily basis. All of those do's and don't in God's Word are there to help us live productive lives. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. Luke 11:28 4. Develop Good Work and Study Habits. (Develop Good Bible Study Habits) Children that develop good study habits are the ones who sail through school without major problems. We as Christians need to develop good study habits when it comes to God's Word. Knowing the Word is what is going to make or break us. We've got to know the Word of God in order to live it. "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15 5. Try Your Best. (Do Your Best for Christ) Teaching our children to do their best will bring results and they can be proud of themselves. It's rewarding to do your best. As Christians we need to strive to do our best in whatever we do. After all we are doing it to honor God. And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance:for ye serve the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23,24 6. Get Along With Your Classmates. (Fellowship With Other Christians) When children are taught to get along together at school it causes such a good atmosphere for learning. When we as Christians get along with each other and fellowship with one another, it causes more productive lives, which helps further the cause of Christ. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 1 John 1:7 7. Get To Know Your Teacher. (Know Christ More) One of the first things a student needs to learn is what is expected of him from his teacher. How does that teacher deal with homework? With classroom policies? With grades? We need to know what Christ expects of us. Getting to know God will help us serve Him better. And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever. 1 Chronicles 28:9
