IT s WORTH A THOUGHT The urban dictionary defines the expression it s just not cricket as follows: Australian slang: Having something that is unjust or just plain wrong done to someone or something. This comes from the game of cricket, which is regarded as a gentleman s game, where fair play was paramount. Now I note that the second-last word in the definition is past tense, but I m optimistic that we can return to a more honourable situation in the future we just need a little courage when we face the options of wining or losing. I recall when an Australian cricketer created international headlines for his actions Adam Gilchrist who was known for walking. When he considered himself out, regardless of what the umpire did or didn t say he walked. That s integrity and it takes courage, especially when the game is in the balance and you ve walked back to your mates in the pavilion in spite of the umpire not seeing or hearing anything. Today we hear the expression Everyone else is doing it! Have you ever heard that line before? Regrettably we hear it more often these days but only when someone feels the need to justify that, which is unjustifiable. But there is an element of truth to that comment because it was back in 1994 when England s captain, Michael Atherton, was caught rubbing dirt on the side of the ball. Then India s Sachin Tendulkar was found guilty of scuffing the seam of the ball causing a backlash and the ruling being overturned in controversial circumstances. Following this Rahul Dravid was found to have rubbed a lozenge on the shiny side of the ball and then England s Marcus Trescothick admitted to tampering with the ball during an Ashes series. In 2010 Pakistan s Shahid Afridi used his teeth to bite on the seam and then South Africa s captain, Faf du Plessis was found to have tampered with the ball on two occasions, firstly in 2013 and then in 2016. Finally South Africa s fast bowler Vernon Philander was found guilty of scratching the ball with his fingers. And here s the required response so what?! It doesn t matter because it s just not cricket! Whether a lot of people or just a few significant people or everyone else is doing it we should never use the behaviour of others as our benchmark or to excuse our own mistakes. Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft have dropped the ball, disappointed us all and ruined their reputations. Regardless of country or culture all people will be tempted at some point and find their character being tested. Rather than point the finger at others, perhaps we should take the opportunity to ask ourselves what will we do when faced with overwhelming pressure and remind ourselves that when in doubt do the right thing. It s worth a thought. Mark B Vodéll, Gilson College Principal Deborah and Don during the recent Christmas concert
