Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Sunday, December 18th, 2016, Sunday of Advent: When he discovered that Mary was with child, Joseph resolved to end their engagement with as little disgrace as possible. But obedient to the voice of God, he changed those plans and became instead the protector of the child Jesus and His mother, Mary. God grant that I may be as open to the leading of the Holy Spirit! SUMMONED BY GOD As Christmas draws near, Advent's scriptures lure us into a world of dreams, signs, wonders, and the miracle of the virgin birth. Too often we allow the great stories of our faith, the ones that are most familiar, simply to wash over us. Today's Gospel account of the events leading up to the birth of the Lord reads like a present-day soap opera. Yet Joseph's courage, even in the midst of what must have been an incredibly confusing time, provides a model for us. Each week, we are summoned by God to embrace the way of goodness and truth through the proclamation of God's holy word. Like Joseph, we are called to do as the Lord commands us. As we stand at the threshold of Christmas, let us have the courage to be open to whatever it is that the Lord will require of us as we celebrate the miracle of Bethlehem. Copyright (c) J. S. Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... This Week: Saturday, December 17th / Sunday, December 18th Fourth Sunday of Advent Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: God is with us, and we are called to live in His presence and take joy out into the world. God promised to send a Savior to the world, and Jesus came among us. In return, we are called to serve Christ and proclaim Him to all. This is easily overlooked as we get caught up in our own pride, or focus on worldly matters. As we look to the Nativity of the Lord, let us shake off distractions and strive to serve Jesus and share Him with others. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The first reading reminds us that the promised Messiah was to be born of a virgin, and was to be named Emmanuel. The second reading exhorts us, as followers of Jesus, to lead lives which are holy and pleasing to God. Today s Gospel tells of Joseph being faithful to the command he received from the angel of the Lord to take Mary into his home as his wife. A New Year s Resolution You Can Keep Want to start the New Year in a way that will transform your work, your marriage, your family, and your life? Are you ready to learn the quickest, surest, and easiest way to holiness? In our hectic day and time, Pope John Paul II and Blessed Mother Teresa knew that the quickest way to be transformed into a saint is through a relationship with Our Blessed Mother, Mary. Join us on Jan 12th or 13th as we begin a 33-day preparation for Marian Consecration. Each day we ll individually follow four great Marian giants: St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian Kolbe, Blessed Mother Teresa, and Pope John Paul II. They ll teach us the secrets to drawing closer to the Heart of Jesus through the Heart of Mary. In our weekly meetings, either Thursdays at 7:30 pm or Fridays at 10 am we ll share our insights within our small group and then watch a 30- minute video. The video by popular author and speaker, Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC, brings our individual reflections and group experience into a clear and live-able focus. If you want to transform your relationship with Christ, this is a perfect New Year's Resolution. Contact Kelly at (323)304-0139 prior to December 19 th, our deadline to order materials. Kids Living Faith: Sunday, December 18th, Fourth Sunday of Advent When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him. Matthew 1:24 It wasn t easy for Joseph to care for Mary and Jesus and keep them safe. But at least he knew what God wanted. An angel told him, after all! It can be hard for us to know what God wants. We usually have to figure out for ourselves. Angels might not appear to us, we do have the Bible, the Church, our parents and our own hearts. They can all help us to understand what God wants, if we listen. Loving God, help me know what you want. JOIN OUR ST. FACT OF LIFE Macy s Defunds Planned Parenthood Public pressure is believed to be responsible for a recent decision by Macy s department store to stop donating money to Planned Parenthood. Macy s confirmed that the company no longer gives and no longer matches donations to Planned Parenthood. Large corporations have been slowly dropping off the list of Planned Parenthood donors after a list of 41 companies that had direct financial ties to the largest abortion provider in the nation was published. Coca-Cola, Ford, Xerox and AT&T all stopped donating in the wake of the publication of the list. To see the list, visit the website 2nd Vote. David Bozell, President of the nine-million member group, ForAmerica, released the following statement congratulating 2nd Vote on their successful campaign to convince Macy s to terminate donations to Planned Parenthood. It is a Christmas miracle indeed to see one less corporate donor to the abortion mill that is Planned Parenthood.
