Revelation Part 4 Lesson 14 DAY ONE Judgment seat of Christ Q1. What do we learn about the judgment mentioned in these two passages? a. 2 Corinthians 5:9-10 9 Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. b. Romans 14:7-12 10 But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11 For it is written, AS I LIVE, SAYS THE LORD, EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW TO ME, AND EVERY TONGUE SHALL GIVE PRAISE TO GOD. 12 So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God. Paul asked the weak Christian, Why are you judging your brother? Then he asked the strong Christian, Why are you despising your brother? Both strong and weak must stand at the Judgment Seat of Christ, and they will not judge each other they will be judged by the Lord. The Judgment Seat of Christ is that place where Christians will have their works judged by the Lord. It has nothing to do with our sins, since Christ has paid for them and they can be held against us no more (Rom. 8:1). 1 Q2. 1 Corinthians 3:1-15 Do you think this relates to the judgment seat you just read about? How? When we stand before the judgment seat of Christ, we will be given a reward for our works that remain. We will suffer lose for our works that are burned up, even though we are still saved. 13 each man s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man s work. 14 If any man s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. 15 If any man s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. (rapture) (marriage supper, 2 nd coming) Q3. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and Revelation 19:7-21. When do you think the judgment set of Christ occurs with respect to the event described in Revelation 19:15? Rev. 19:15 From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. The judgment seat of Christ occurs after the rapture and before the marriage of the Lamb DAY TWO Judgment of the nations What do we learn in Matthew 25:31-46 about the judgment of the nations? Put On Timeline Right After 2 nd Coming WHEN 31 But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. WHO 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; 33 and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left. 1
Outcome for sheep 34 Then the King will say to those on His right, Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Outcome for goats 41 Then He will also say to those on His left, Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; DAY THREE AND DAY FOUR Resurrections Q1. What do we learn in these passages about resurrections that are coming? a. Daniel 12:1-2 1 Now at that time Michael, the great prince who stands guard over the sons of your people, will arise. And there will be a time of distress such as never occurred since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the book, will be rescued. 2 Many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt. b. John 5:28-29 28 for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment. Believers will be given resurrection bodies so that they might reign with Christ in glory. Unbelievers will be given resurrection bodies but not glorified bodies that they might be judged and then suffer punishment in those bodies. Bodies that were used for sin will suffer the consequences of that sin. 1 Q2. Keeping in mind what we have learned about the Church and the first resurrection When does 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (rapture) occur relative to Revelation 20:4-5 (millennial reign)? BEFORE Q3. In John 5:29 Jesus speaks of a resurrection of life and a resurrection of judgment. a. Do you think these happen at the same time? (Revelation 20:4-5) NO b. Resurrection of the judgment Who participates in Revelation 20:11-15? The dead What is their fate? The lake of fire Why? name was not found written in the book of life Q4.Why does God judge unbelievers according to their deeds? YES DO! a. Matthew 10:5-15 heard the disciples, the gospel message, do not receive, or heed 5 These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them: Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans; 6 but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 And as you go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. 14 Whoever does not receive you, nor heed your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake the dust off your feet. 15 Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city. b. Mathew 11:21-24 Heard Jesus, saw His miracles, did not repent 20 Then He began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles were done, because they did not repent. 1 Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). The Bible exposition commentary (Vol. 1, p. 307). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books. 2
21 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had occurred in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 Nevertheless I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. 23 Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will descend to Hades; for if the miracles had occurred in Sodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this day. 24 Nevertheless I say to you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for you. c. Matthew 12:38-42 Jesus greater than Jonah, Solomon, yet the Pharisees wanted a sign 38 some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, Teacher, we want to see a sign from You. 39 But He answered and said to them, An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet; 40 for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise up with this generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. d. Luke 11:31-32 similar to passage above e. Mark 12:38-40 their deeds were all about seeking the praise and honor of men 38 In His teaching He was saying: Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes, and like respectful greetings in the market places, 39 and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 40 who devour widows houses, and for appearance s sake offer long prayers; these will receive greater condemnation. f. Luke 20:45-47 similar to passage above g. John 19:10-11 Could be that Judas sin greater because of the knowledge he had 10 So Pilate said to Him, You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You? 11 Jesus answered, You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin. Q5. Where on your time line would you place the following events? Resurrection of the righteous (Daniel 12:2, John 5:29) at the 1 st resurrection begin of millennial kingdom Great White Throne Judgment (Rev 20:11-15) After the millennial kingdom Judgment seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10; Romans 14:10) After the rapture, before the marriage of the Lamb Judgment of the nations (Matthew 25:31-46) After the 2 nd coming, before the millennial kingdom or at the beginning of it Christ s second coming (Revelation 19:11-16) After the marriage supper of the Lamb, 7 th bowl poured out 3
DAY FIVE Hades / hell / lake of fire & final exhortations and warnings Q1. What does Revelation 20:13-14 say about Hades? 13And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire second death, the lake of fire. Q3. What else does the bible tell us about Hades? a. Luke 10:15 13 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had been performed in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 15 Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will be brought down to Hades! 16 The one who listens to you listens to Me, and the one who rejects you rejects Me; and he who b. Luke 16:23 22 Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham Lazarus in his bosom. c. Acts 2:27, 31 25 For David says of Him, I SAW THE LORD ALWAYS IN MY PRESENCE; FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND, SO THAT I WILL NOT BE SHAKEN. 27 BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT ABANDON MY SOUL TO HADES, NOR ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY. 29 Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 And so, because he was a prophet and knew that GOD HAD SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH TO SEAT one OF HIS DESCENDANTS ON HIS THRONE, 31 he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that HE WAS NEITHER ABANDONED TO HADES, NOR DID His flesh SUFFER DECAY. d. Revelation 1:17-18 17When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, 18 and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades. e. Revelation 6:8 8 I looked, and behold, an ashen horse; and he who sat on it had the name Death; and Hades was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by the wild beasts of the earth. Q4. What does the bible say about hell / lake of fire? Why do you think it is important to know about hell? a. Revelation 20:14, 15 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15And if anyone s name was not found written in the book of life thrown into the lake of fire. b. Matthew 5:22, 29, 30 4
22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, You good-for-nothing, shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, You fool, shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. 29 If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell. c. Mark 9:43, 45, 47 43 If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled, than, having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, 44 [where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.] 45 If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame, than, having your two feet, to be cast into hell, 46 [where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.] 47 If your eye causes you to stumble, throw it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than, having two eyes, to be cast into hell, 48 where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED. d. Luke 12:5 4 I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do. 5 But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him! e. Matthew 25:41 41 Then He will also say to those on His left, Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; f.
