Chapter U Christmas Party Montana Mike's December 9, 2017 New Braunfels, Texas FUN U U HO, HO, HO! It s that time of year again! Tux and I want to wish a Merry Christmas to all Riders and Co-Riders of Chapter U and their families. We are well into the out with the heat and in with the cold and wetter portion of the year. There s never a bad time to ride your bike/trike, but here in Texas some of our best rides are in the cool, brisk days centered around Christmas. Along with our riding agenda, Tux and I have already experienced Halloween and Thanksgiving, and we re really gearing up for the Best Season of Them All, Christmas! Tux and I normally miss only one thing that makes the Christmas holiday season so special, and that is snow. When riding we are especially glad to miss snow and it s frozen, slushy byproducts, but when we want to sit by the fire and look out the window, we expect to see the countryside covered with the white stuff. So, if you are thinking of snow, enjoy those thoughts and delight in the musical sounds of the season, the winter wonderland, and the welcome awareness of friends and family. But, if you are on the road, be careful, ride according to your limits and the weather, and bring yourself safely home. These ladies helped to make the Yuletide bright

The Riders and Co-Riders of Chapter U capped off 2017 with their annual Christmas Party at Montana Mike's in New Braunfels, Texas. Sixty-four GWRRA Riders, Co-Riders, guests, and assorted spouses and significant others welcomed the Christmas season with their motorcycling GWRRA family. A special thanks to Montana Mike's for their hospitality, superb service, and allowing Chapter U to partake of another well-prepared meal in their establishment. They really set the stage for the rest of our party activities. Setting the stage for our Christmas party activities, Sheila Morris encouraged us to Thank the Lord for a memorable and Safe year, and gave thanks for all the members and friends (new and old) who were in attendance. Retired elves? Chapter Director s, Steve and Donna Van Gilder, made administrative remarks and recognized the following outgoing members of the Chapter U staff for their work in 2017: Court and Diane van Sickler - Assistant Chapter Directors Ken and Connie Jordan - Rider Educators Helen Smith - Treasurer, Chapter Activities Coordinator Pat and Rick Kendrick 2017 Chapter U Couple of the Year Tom Hendricks 2017 Chapter U Individual of the Year

Honoring our outgoing Chapter Director s Steve and Donna Van Gilder - Chapter Directors. Steve and Donna were presented with a Chapter U Certificate of Appreciation and a mixed bouquet of flowers for their two-year tenure as Chapter Director s. The Chapter is appreciative of their guidance and leadership, and looks forward to their wisdom and sage advice regarding chapter activities in the future. Sal and Phylis Pesta 2018 Assistant Chapter Directors

The new staff positions in Chapter U were also announced. These folks will be the Chapter Directors and supporting staff for 2018. Tux says please give them your support in the upcoming year as we ride, meet, greet, and have another year of unmitigated FUN. Ed and Helen Smith - Chapter Directors Sal and Phylis Pesta Assistant Chapter Directors Pat and Carol Wall - Chapter Ride Coordinator s Tom Hendricks - Membership Enhancement Coordinator Scott and Debbie Hay - 2018 Chapter U Couple of the Year Donna Van Gilder - Chapter of the Year Coordinator Phylis Pesta - Chapter Historian Debbie Hay Treasurer/Facebook Coordinator Ed Smith - Webmaster Pat and Rick Kendrick - Hospitality Ambassadors Scott Hay - Newsletter Editor/Chapter Photographer Your 2018 Chapter Director s, Ed and Helen Smith Steve introduced our newest member, Dwaine Smith, who was attending his first GWRRA and Chapter U event. Welcome aboard Dwaine! Steve also introduced old friends and Riders Skip and Beth Surre; Macey Moore, grand daughter of Pat and Carol Wall; and from the Texas District staff, Texas Assistant Directors Tom and Dawn Sprague. It was also good to see Clint and Michelle Carlton back to the Chapter U vicinity from their journeys throughout the United States. The Chapter also honored Riders with December birthdays and anniversaries.

GWRRA Texas State Assistant Director Tom Sprague playing Christmas games One of the novelties of our Christmas party program was honoring the 2017 Chapter "U" Couple of the Year (COY) and presenting the 2018 COY. The COY program began as a way to honor couples at the local level, and to select enthusiastic duos to serve as ambassadors and spokespersons for GWRRA. It has evolved into a useful tool for identifying and helping prepare couples for leadership positions within the GWRRA organization. Tux photo bombing last year s COY

Chapter U was well represented in 2017 by Rick and Pat Kendrick who received a certificate of appreciation and recognized for their tenure as the 2017 COY. The Kendrick s are two of the stalwarts of the Chapter U team, and were seen throughout the year at most of the Chapter, District, and Regional activities. Great job Rick and Pat! 2018 Chapter U COY Scott and Debbie Hay Congratulations to the 2018 Chapter U COY Scott and Debbie Hay. Chapter U is looking forward to the representation you bring to the Chapter. Tux wants to be the first to congratulate the Hay s on being honored by our chapter for their efforts, support, and representation in 2018 while focusing on Fun, Safety and Knowledge. A patriotic wreath was also given to the Hay s in honor of their becoming Chapter U s 2018 COY. The following activities were discussed and some highlight the start of the 2018 Chapter U riding year (Updates and additional information can be found on the Chapter U website): 1 January, Monday - 2018 Blessing of the Bikes at Javelina Harley in Boerne, TX. Following the Blessing of the Bikes, Rider s will have lunch in the area. Depart from Kent Power Sports at 8:00 a.m. 6 January, Saturday - 9:30 a.m. - Road Captain Training and Refresher Course will be at Kent Power Sports at 9:30 a.m. Weather permitting, a ride for lunch will follow. 13 January, Saturday - Texas Mid-Winter Round-Up will be held in Washington on the Brazos State Park, TX. All new officers are expected to attend. Travel day is Friday, 12 January. Departure time and the official hotel will be forthcoming.

17 January, Wednesday - Chapter Gathering" for Chapter U will be at the La Cabana Restaurant, upstairs room, at 170 Buffalo Place Cibolo, TX. 20 January, Saturday - Wreaths Across America clean up. Meet at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery at 8:30 a.m. at Shelter #4. We will go to lunch afterwards. 2-4 February, Tuesday - Texas District Education Weekend will be held in Killeen, TX. Departure time, location, and hotel will be forthcoming. This year the Chapter supported the Randolph Area Christian Assistance Program (RACAP) by contributing to their food drive with multiple items of food to help feed people in their local program. Chapter U Riders also contributed toy donations through one of our sponsors, Kent Power Sports. Each member choosing to participate donated unwrapped new toys to help make a child s Christmas more enjoyable. Tux said, It was great to see the Christmas and giving spirit, and the huge amount of food and toys contributed by this Chapter. Chapter U is making the holidays happier for many this season! Besides the food, one of the highlights of the afternoon was the Holiday gift exchange, where each participant put a gift under the Christmas tree. Each present was given a number, and the when the Master of Ceremonies called that number the person had the option to either take the present or exchange/ take/steal another person's gift. A gift could only be stolen two times, and it then belonged permanently to the third taker/stealer. Some gifts were more popular than others, and the person who lost their original gift, in some cases, was able to open or steal a multitude of gifts. There was not a whole lot of stealing of gifts this year, which Tux attributed to the overall quality of the gifts exchanged. Still, some folks were really disappointed when their gift was stolen for the third time without a way to get it back! At the end of the exchange the person who received the first gift from under the tree was able to steal/take any of the remaining gifts. Gene Barta elected to trade the final gift he had originally received and went home with some Christmas cheer to warm up his holidays! The winner of the "Ugliest Christmas Sweater" was Phylis Pesta. Congratulations to Phylis and the other Ugliest Christmas Sweater participants.

Ugliest Christmas Sweater participants Steve Van Gilder Ed Smith, and Court van Sickler did an excellent job conducting the raffles and leading the activities for the day. Kudos to them! The Chapter presented numerous door prizes to the attendees. The winner of the $75.00 Kent Power Sports gift certificate was Pat Wall. Kent Power Sports, New Braunfels, also provided gift certificates that were won by Janine Hendricks, Bob Priest and JR Gressler. Thanks to our sponsors who provided prizes for the raffle. Winner of $250.00 in the Christmas raffle was the van Sickler family. Thanks to Phylis Pesta and Diane van Sickler and their elves for selling tickets all year long so we could have this great payout as part of our festivities. Pat Kendrick stepped up and volunteered to coordinate the 50/50 Christmas drawing for 2018. Gifts and prizes galore!

A special thanks goes out to the Chapter personnel that made this Christmas Party so festive and memorable. You are commended for doing so much with so little to please such a large number of people. Rick and Pat Kendrick contributed the beautiful table decorations for each of the tables, which were raffled off to lucky winners. Thanks Rick and Pat. Thanks to Diane and Court van Sickler who brought a cake to ensure we had our just desserts at the conclusion of the dinner, and Tux said a special thanks to Phylis Pesta and Helen Smith for taking time on Black Friday to shop for many of our raffle prizes. Good job one and all! Again, Tux and I wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and happy, bountiful holidays. May the spirit of the season extend into your 2018 New Year. Merry Christmas to all and.. Write up provided by Tom Hendricks and photos provided by Scott Hay. P.S. - Tux and I went to the Kent Motorsports (I-35N) New Braunfels Christmas party after the Chapter U Christmas party. My wife had been saying she wanted a new coffee table for Christmas. Lucky me, I just won a new Yeti cooler for her. Hope all my shopping is as successful. Coffee table
