Calvary Episcopal Church - Rochester, Minnesota Dear Friends: A new month! February is the time when we creep towards spring, deal with Groundhog Day, and move into the Church season of Lent. Lent begins this year on Wednesday, February 14 with Ash Wednesday. The fact that we mark Ash Wednesday and Valentine s Day on the same day this year presents a conundrum of sorts, as we are called by the church to a day of fasting and solemnity, and by the culture to a day of feasting and gifts. Somewhere in there is the core of God s love for us all whether we name God s eternal love for us by taking part in Ash Wednesday services, or by reflecting God s love in the ones that we love the most via Valentine s celebrations, it s all about love. Maybe you can figure out a way to celebrate love with an Ash Wednesday worship service and Valentine s Day it s a year for creativity! Lent officially begins with Ash Wednesday, but we will begin this new season on Tuesday, February 13 with a Shrove Tuesday supper at Calvary. A simple Evening Prayer Service will start at 5:30pm. As we exit the church, all will be invited to bring their old Palms saved from last year s Palm Sunday services to the courtyard, where we will burn the palms to create ashes for Ash Wednesday. This is a wonderful way to teach children about these two big days in our church calendar, and the visual of seeing dried palms go up in flames, accompanied by a short reading and prayer, is a dramatic and moving way to enter into Lent. After we burn the palms, we will gather in Brackenridge for a supper of pancakes and all the fixings prepared and served by our Youth. The proceeds of the meal will help fund future Youth Mission opportunities. The children will bury the Alleluias that they will

have ready from Sunday school, and Lent will begin. We ll have many opportunities through worship and learning to participate in Lent at Calvary this year. One new Lenten opportunity is called A Ton of Tuna! All ages are invited to collect cans or bags of tuna fish that will be given to the RCTC and Channel One food shelves for those in our community who need help with food. I invite you to find a way to live out your Lenten discipline, whether that is giving something up, or taking something on, at Calvary Episcopal Church. And, bring a friend. in peace, Beth+ February 2018 opportunities to strengthen your faith and connect with the community. EVENING PRAYER & PANCAKE SUPPER Shrove Tuesday (Feb. 13) begins with Evening Prayer in the church, followed by Palm burning (to make ashes), then the Pancake Supper in Brackenridge Hall and finally the burying of the Alleluia banners. $5 per person/$20 per family Ages 5 and under, free Sign-up in Brackenridge Hall We need the following donations: 4 dozen eggs 6 gallons of milk 6 gallons of orange juice 6 cans whipped cream 2 large tubs of margarine 2 large bags of frozen strawberries Additionally, we need to borrow 5 electric griddles for the LENTEN STUDIES On each Wednesday evening during Lent, from February 21 - March 21, Rev. Beth will be facilitating a Lenten study for Adults called "Hosanna: A Spiritual Journey through Holy Week," This five week study will explore the main texts in all four Gospels and in Paul's writing relating to the last week of Jesus' life and his resurrection. This is a covenant class - it is designed for people who can commit to attend all or most of these five weeks. A small fee of $13.00 will pay for a resource book for each attendee. The class will be approximately an hour long, beginning with a simple soup supper and bread at 5:30 pm followed by the class from 6 to 7 pm, so that those with Choir and other commitments will be able to participate. Please email Rev. Beth at rector@calvary-rochester.org with

evening. questions or to indicate your interest. Please contact Colleen Timimi if you can donate any supplies. Wednesday evenings Feb. 21 - Mar. 21 from 6 to 7 pm Tuesday, Feb. 13 beginning at 5:30 pm CALVARY COMMUNITY CONVERSATION Since the 1970 s, parishioner Bette Dines has led the effort to design and create our beautiful needlework at Calvary including fifteen kneelers and the cushions adorning the bench in our north entrance. In addition, she has worked with the National Cathedral s Ecclesiastical Needlepoint guidelines and created needlepoint on display at the Cathedral in Washington, DC. We welcome Bette for a photo presentation and discussion of her works of art. You do not want to miss this opportunity to share in a piece of Calvary s rich history and hear from our very own interesting and talented Bette! Sun, Feb. 11 at 10 am in Crawford Hall LENTEN MISSION OPPORTUNITY: A TON OF TUNA Tuna is a much needed source of protein offered to our neighbors through food shelves in Rochester. All ages are invited to collect as many cans or pouches of tuna and bring them to Brackenridge Hall starting February 13 thru March 26. The tuna we collect will be divided between the RCTC Student Food Pantry and the Community Food Response emergency meal program. Let s collect a ton!
