Calvary Episcopal Church - Rochester, Minnesota Dear Friends: A new month! February is the time when we creep towards spring, deal with Groundhog Day, and move into the Church season of Lent. Lent begins this year on Wednesday, February 14 with Ash Wednesday. The fact that we mark Ash Wednesday and Valentine s Day on the same day this year presents a conundrum of sorts, as we are called by the church to a day of fasting and solemnity, and by the culture to a day of feasting and gifts. Somewhere in there is the core of God s love for us all whether we name God s eternal love for us by taking part in Ash Wednesday services, or by reflecting God s love in the ones that we love the most via Valentine s celebrations, it s all about love. Maybe you can figure out a way to celebrate love with an Ash Wednesday worship service and Valentine s Day it s a year for creativity! Lent officially begins with Ash Wednesday, but we will begin this new season on Tuesday, February 13 with a Shrove Tuesday supper at Calvary. A simple Evening Prayer Service will start at 5:30pm. As we exit the church, all will be invited to bring their old Palms saved from last year s Palm Sunday services to the courtyard, where we will burn the palms to create ashes for Ash Wednesday. This is a wonderful way to teach children about these two big days in our church calendar, and the visual of seeing dried palms go up in flames, accompanied by a short reading and prayer, is a dramatic and moving way to enter into Lent. After we burn the palms, we will gather in Brackenridge for a supper of pancakes and all the fixings prepared and served by our Youth. The proceeds of the meal will help fund future Youth Mission opportunities. The children will bury the Alleluias that they will
have ready from Sunday school, and Lent will begin. We ll have many opportunities through worship and learning to participate in Lent at Calvary this year. One new Lenten opportunity is called A Ton of Tuna! All ages are invited to collect cans or bags of tuna fish that will be given to the RCTC and Channel One food shelves for those in our community who need help with food. I invite you to find a way to live out your Lenten discipline, whether that is giving something up, or taking something on, at Calvary Episcopal Church. And, bring a friend. in peace, Beth+ February 2018 opportunities to strengthen your faith and connect with the community.
