SECOND SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY JANUARY 20, 2019 TODAY'S WORSHIP Divine Service III LSB pages 184-202 L = Liturgist * = Stand C = Congregation PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *OPENING HYMN When Christ s Appearing was Made Known 1. When Christ s appearing was made known, King Herod trembled for his throne; But he who offers heav nly birth Seeks not the kingdoms of this earth. 2. The eastern sages saw from far And followed on his guiding star; By light their way to light they trod, And by their gifts confessed their God. 3. Within the Jordan s sacred flood The heav nly Lamb in meekness stood That he, of whom no sin was known, Might cleanse his people from their own. 4. For this his glad epiphany All glory unto Jesus be, Whom with the Father we adore, And Holy Ghost forevermore. *INVOCATION AND GENERAL CONFESSION L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. L: The Spirit of the sovereign Lord is upon me C: To preach good news to the poor. L: He has sent me C: To bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives, and release from darkness for the prisoners L: To proclaim the year of the Lord s favor C: To comfort all who mourn and those who grieve. L: Merciful Heavenly Father: C: We confess the poverty of our lives and worship, the broken hearts and spirits of a people caught in sin, guilt, and death. We pray for freedom from the captivity of our sins and release from the darkness of sin s guilt. Grant us forgiveness through Christ Jesus and teach us, who mourn our sins, to live holy and upright lives all our days. Amen. *THE ABSOLUTION *THE GLORIA PATRI (Taken from LSB, page 186) C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. *THE KYRIE C: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. *THE COLLECT OF THE DAY L: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit. L: Let us pray.

THE OLD TESTAMENT READING for the second Sunday after Epiphany is from Isaiah 62:1-5, page 621: (5:00, 8:00 & 10:30) 1 For Zion s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem s sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch. 2 The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. 3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. 5 For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 10:30 Chancel Choir We Are Singing for the Lord is Our Light THE EPISTLE is from I Corinthians 12:3-11, page 959: 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says "Jesus is accursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except in the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. L: This is the Word of the Lord. *ALLELUIA AND VERSE C: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. *THE HOLY GOSPEL - The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the second chapter, verses 1-11, page 887: C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 1 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." 4 And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." 6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast." So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now." 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ. *THE NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the

Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY O Chief of Cities, Bethlehem 1. O chief of cities, Bethlehem, Of David s crown the fairest gem, But more to us than David s name, In you, as man, the Savior came. 2. Beyond the sun in splendor bright, Above you stands a wondrous light Proclaiming from the conscious skies That here in flesh the God-head lies. 3. The golden tribute owns Him king, But frankincense to God they bring, And last, prophetic sign, with myrrh They shadow forth His sepulcher. 4. The Wise Men, seeing him so fair, Bow low before him and with prayer Their treasured eastern gifts unfold Of incense, myrrh, and royal gold. THE SERMON Calm in Crisis (John 2:2-4, 11) THE OFFERING - During the offering all worshipers are asked to fill out the blue or ivory cards found in the pew rack. Please pass cards down to center aisle. They will be collected immediately after the offering.
