Welcome! While the summer wind is warm and lovely, we will focus on the good life. We are always striving to make sense of the events and people and stuff of life. What then, is a good life? What makes a life good? Cabins? Boats? Shiny, new things? Mass quantities of friends? What does God think about the good life? (Hint: for a clue, read Matthew 6:25-33) The Good Life: Rest A mark of the good life is rest. In a busy culture marked by go, go, go we often think the whole idea of rest is so we can recharge for the next busy thing. But our faith and God tells us something different. Listen closely to the sermon to hear how rest reminds us that we belong to God and not our daily toil. Today we use Marty Haugen s setting of the liturgy Now the Feast and Celebration Parents, you can find canvas activity bags for your children in the back of the sanctuary. For infants up through age three, the nursery is available. Thank you for joining us today. We welcome you! You are also invited to take an Announcements sheet here at Easter, or visit easter.org for events & activities (Announcement sheets are posted weekly under Events & News). Rest September 3, 2017 8:30 & 10 a.m. Easter Lutheran Church to grow in faith and carry on the work of Jesus Christ Prelude: I Will Arise and Go to Jesus - Traditional, arr. Hustad Greetings and Announcements Ben Kornelis, organ Confession and Forgiveness Gathering P: God of life, we are caught up in searching for the good life. C: We constantly compare ourselves to each other P: when we need to turn ourselves to you. C: We search for satisfaction in the things we buy P: when you ve already given us all we need. C: We criticize ourselves and judge our neighbors P: when we really need grace and love. (a moment of quiet reflection) P: Living God, send your spirit into this place. Bring us peace. C: Remind us that you, O God, are the good life. P: People of Easter, by God s love and grace all of your sins are forgiven. You are free to live the life that God desires for you, a truly good life indeed. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

Canticle of Praise: Now the Feast and Celebration Hymnal #167 Prayer of the Day O God, we thank you for times of refreshment and peace in the course of this busy life. Grant that we may use our leisure for the renewal of our bodies and minds that our spirits may be opened to the goodness of your creation; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. 3

Anthem: A Simple Song (from Mass ) - Leonard Bernstein Bev Hannon, vocalist Sing God a simple song: Lauda, Laude (praise) Make it up as you go along: Laude, Laude Sing like you like to sing. God loves all simple things, For God is the simplest of all. I will sing the Lord a new song To praise Him, to bless Him, to bless the Lord. I will sing His praises while I live All of my days. Blessed is the man who loves the Lord, Blessed is the man who praises Him. Lauda, Lauda, Laude And walks in His ways. I will lift up my eyes To the hills from whence comes my help. I will lift up my voice to the Lord Singing Lauda, Laude. For the Lord is my shade, Is the shade upon my right hand, And the sun shall not smite me by day Nor the moon by night. Blessed is the man who loves the Lord, Lauda, Lauda, Laude, And walks in His ways. Lauda, Lauda, Laude, Lauda, Lauda di da di day All of my days. - from the Psalms & Stephen Schwartz, Leonard Bernstein Boosey & Hawkes God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song Children s Message Word Lesson: Genesis 2: 1-3 (NRSV) Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation. L: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 4

Lesson: Exodus 20: 8-10 (NRSV) Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. L: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation: Marty Haugen, 1990, GIA Publications, Inc., All rights reserved. ONE LICENSE, License #A-727213 Gospel: Mark 2: 23-28 (NRSV) One sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath? And he said to them, Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions. Then he said to them, The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath. L: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Hymn of the Day: I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say Hymnal #611 Father is a specific and accessible image of God that Jesus gave us. Jesus did not limit God to this image. References to God as Creator, Parent, Mother, Counselor can be equally as helpful and valid. Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Sharing of the Peace is a way of demonstrating hospitality and grace with others. Please understand if some people choose not to shake hands while sharing the Peace for health reasons, but simply greet you with a smile. Prayers of Intercession Peace 6

And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy 8 Marty Haugen, 1990, GIA Publications, Inc., All rights reserved. We Come to You for Healing, Lord Hymnal #617 Prayer after Communion Sending Affirmation of Christian Vocation P: Easter People, both your work and your rest are in God. Will you endeavor to pattern your life on the Lord Jesus Christ, in gratitude to God and in service to others, at morning and at evening, at work and at play, all the days of your life? C: I will, and ask God to help me. P: Almighty God, by the power of the Spirit you have knit these your servants into the one body of your Son, Jesus Christ.
