When I first heard that someone was going to start Catholic radio I thought it was going to be praying all the time or Christian music. But it s been wonderful. I especially like the talk shows and the callers to the various shows. I follow Patrick Madrid on Twitter and Facebook. Here s a quote I found from him. I am part of the Fellowship of the Unashamed... My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my future is in God's hands... I am a disciple of Jesus. I must go till he comes, give until I drop, speak out until all know, and work until he stops me. (Patrick Madrid) Someone spoke to us about the Terry and Jesse Show: Those two are on fire for our Catholic Faith. I listen every day that I can. They call it full-contact Catholicism. That makes me smile.
Our pilgrimage to Mother Angelica's Shrine of The Most Blessed Sacrament By Jim and Candy Bridges Jim and I made our second visit to Alabama this past summer. It was my godmother who suggested we listen to Mother Angelica's book on tape titled, "Mother Angelica. The Remarkable Story of a Nun, Her Nerve, and a Network of Miracles" We decided we'd listen to her story while driving the 1565 miles from Pine, Arizona to Hanceville, Alabama. Author, Raymond Arroyo, does an outstanding job narrating the book on tape. His voice impressions of all the characters throughout Mother's life help to remember who's who in the story. Raymond spent more than five years interviewing Mother Angelica. Throughout her life, she endured many physical and emotional challenges and she shares them honestly and candidly. We finished the book on tape just before arriving to our destination. Queen of Peace Guesthouse in Hanceville, Alabama is where we met our fellow pilgrims. The beautiful home is one of many guesthouses that accommodate both small and large groups of visitors and pilgrims visiting the Shrine. Maria Ferra, the owner of Queen of Peace, experienced a calling from the Lord years ago while visiting the Shrine herself. God called her to sell her lucrative restaurants in another state, move to Alabama and build a guesthouse for pilgrims who visit the Shrine. Over the years, she has acquired, remodeled and built several beautiful and comfortable guesthouses just a mile or two from the Shrine. They are clean, comfortable and convenient. Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament - Hanceville, Alabama 7 1/2 foot high monstrance behind the altar We attended Mass at the Shrine each morning during our stay. The utmost reverence and respect for the Holy Eucharist at Mass is beautiful. The Shrine is a sacred place and you feel it. Mother Angelica's relationship with her spouse (Jesus) was very real for her. It was common for her to go to the chapel and show Jesus a new pair of shoes or other items she purchased. She spared no expense for her Lord when it came to all the beautiful furnishings and decor inside the Shrine and all throughout the property. In addition, hundreds of people donated precious jewels and diamonds that surround the true presence in the monstrance behind the altar. It's stunning and breathtaking. Although no names have been acknowledged, Mother Angelica shares in her book that it was five families that donated all the funds for the shrine and its property and surrounding structures, decor and design. Anything Mother needed or wanted, the donors were happy to oblige. Queen of Peace Guest House Mother Angelica Quotes Never lose sight of the fact that you are beloved of God. Everything depends on the Lord: our salvation, our hope, our love. Everything. God has our entire lives in the palm of His Loving Hand. We can rest secure about our past, present, and future for He loves us. The mosaic of the Pelican on the main altar is a symbol of the Holy Eucharist dating back to Christendom. Jesus feeds us with his life-giving blood. This image impressed us so much and even more, after we learned the meaning.
There's lot's to do at the Shrine One of the most interesting places to visit on the Shrines property is JP II Eucharistic Center. The exhibits and displays create a visual experience that you will never forget. There are full-sized displays such as the first Passover, a 1stcentury Jewish synagogue, the Last Supper, a beautiful fountain with the "Lamb standing as though slain" and water flowing out of the Temple. The artwork is outstanding. Both Jim and I enjoyed reading the wall timeline of documented Eucharistic Miracles and where they occurred all throughout the world.. Lourdes Grotto replica The El Nino Gift Shop The underground Chapel where Mother Angelica and her nuns are interned and where Masses are celebrated. A Life-sized Nativity in a cave A replica exhibit of the Shroud of Turin Daily Masses, Tours and other scheduled events happen each day at the Shrine. EWTN Headquarters in Irondale, Alabama It was in 1981 that Mother Angelica, using her entrepreneurial instincts and $200, created the world s largest religious media empire in the garage of a Birmingham, Alabama, Under her guidance, the Eternal Word Television Network grew at an amazing rate, EWTN reaches over a hundred million viewers in hundreds of countries around the world. Our group left the guesthouse early one morning and drove about an hour and a half outside of Birmingham to visit the studios of EWTN. Our day was packed with lots of activities. We began with attending the daily televised Mass. Afterwards, we moved to a meeting room where we listened to a friar share some of the histories of EWTN. We then visited the gift shop, watched a video presentation about Mother Angelica, toured stage sets for various EWTN TV shows and participated in a live show with Father Mitch Pacwa. We ended the day with another tour of the radio, TV, and Shortwave communication rooms. Father Mitch Pacwa hosting EWTN Live Our group As we toured the state of the art radio and TV control rooms and studios, Jim's thoughts were back in Payson, Arizona. He reflected on KPIH and the board of directors desire to grow KPIH 98.9. Seeing what Mother Angelica has accomplished for God through the support of people who believed in her vision to expand Catholic teaching throughout the world is a testimony to faith and determination. Jim reminded me of two things. One being KPIH carries many EWTN programs on the weekends and two, how KPIH is working hard to find ways to expand its broadcasting to all of the Rim Country. This will happen through purchasing upgraded equipment, technology and of course prayerful and financial support from the community and beyond. Mother Angelica was bold, unafraid and diligent with asking for help and support. Mother Angelica was famous for saying, "Please keep us between your gas and electric bill!"
