The Paulinian focus BI-MONTHLY NEWSLETTER ST. PAUL S UMC SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER St. Paul s UMC Welcoming all people to Jesus with kindness and understanding Building toward the future: Those who wait upon the Lord Will renew their strength Isaiah 40:31 We all know that patience is a virtue. That knowledge does not, however, make us particularly a patient people. Stuff happens, plans have to be shuffled or, in some cases, totally reformulated. But God is faithful. In God s time, if we trust God and remain faithful, the vision will be realized. Much has been accomplished already, but most of our vision remains before us. Let us, with patience, wait upon the Lord and find our strength renewed, trusting in God rather than in ourselves Calendar 9/3- Communion 9/10- Rally Day 9/12 Tentative Election 9/14 Finance Meeting 9/20- Council Meeting 9/24- Masonic Service 9/27- Worship Meeting 10/1 Communion World Communion Sunday 10/15- St. Paul s 158 th Anniversary Sunday 10/18 Council Meeting 10/22- Laity Sunday All meeting with a * start at 7:30pm

Food Pantry News We continue to serve many families in recent months. Our growth can be attributed to the grace of our Lord as well as the dedication and service of our beloved Jean Stricklin. Faithful supporters can donate food as well as cash. We do try to supply meat to many, including Chicken, Beef, Sausages, Ham Slices and Hot Dogs. A special Thank You to those who continue to donate their time to organize/put food away, go shopping and make set-ups for our families in need. If you would like to volunteer to help out in the food pantry, Contact Jean Stricklin through the church office. (718) 227-2485 Many hands make light work - John Haywood Matthew 25:40 Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me. Music Ministry Opportunities Whether through participation in traditional choirs or our new Praise Band, we encourage those with musical ability and interest to consider joining the Music Ministry here at St. Paul s.. Traditional Music Contac Organist/Choir Director, Nancy Paugh (718) 984-3965 if you want to participate in the music offerings of our choirs and instrumentalists at our 10am Traditional Worship Service. Soloing, singing with the choirs or playing an instrument to enhance service music and hymns are great ways to deepen the worship experience for both others and oneself. New choir members (Gr.2 & up) and instrumentalists are always welcome. Sunday School Alternative/Contemporary Contact Pastor Joe if you want to participate in providing the music that permeates our new Alternative/Contemporary Worship. If you like to sing or play guitar, bass, drums (or another instrument) and are willing to devote a couple of hours weekly to practice, we welcome you to consider becoming part of the Praise Team. A re-visioning of how to provide Christian Education for children is currently underway. Watch for details in the near future. Reinventing St. Paul s Coming Soon Rendering below is a representation of the possible sanctuary remodel not the final rendering

From Pastor Joe. Grace and peace to you all from the God who creates us in love, redeems us in love, and sustains us on our daily journey in love. The changes just keep coming. This year, only churches who have received new pastors will have individual Charge Conferences. Those congregations (including St. Paul s) who continue with the same pastor will complete and submit paperwork, but will not have their own charge conferences. Instead, we have received an invitation to participate in: District-Wide Church Conference Saturday, November 4, 2017 St. Paul and St. Andrew UMC 263 West 86 th Street, NY, NY 10024 9:30am - 3:00pm / lunch provided The keynote speaker will be The Rev. Jeff Campbell, Executive Director of Disciple Ministry The United Methodist Church as a whole, and the New York Annual Conference in particular, under the leadership of Bishop Tom Bickerton, are rolling up their sleeves to get to work to revitalize the churches that are ready and willing to make the necessary changes that lead to real opportunities for faithful growth. During the Annual Conference meeting in June Bishop Bickerton made it clear that there would not be a business as usual approach under his leadership. He wants to see innovative, risk-taking approaches to ministry. He considers local churches as mission outposts from which ministry is envisioned, planned, and implemented. He considers the local congregation to be the ministry partners of pastors appointed, not simply to the local congregation, but to the local community. Embrace the change! Grace and peace, Pastor Joe Welcome! St. Paul s UMC hopes to be a growing congregation with room for you. St. Paul s United Methodist seeks to be a Community that is Helpful Unified Relevant and Caring where all can feel at Home

Driving Toward Renewal Extravagant Generosity Radical Hospitality Passionate & Inspiring Worship Faith Forming Relationships Risk Taking Missions & Service Engaged Disciples in Outreach Effective & Inspiring Leadership Strong Children s & Youth Ministries Reinventing St. Paul s Updates Replacement of the roof has been completed Bids being received for work on stained glass windows Architect for handicap accessibility ramp in progress Around the globe, countless gifted and qualified people face financial obstacles that hinder them from preparing for the vocation God has given them, especially youth and young adults. For ethnic students who will be the first generation in their families to attend college, or for those people of color who haven t historically had access to resources that make higher education possible, the road toward education has often been unwieldy.
