Tangled Thoughts that range from sweet/bittersweet, to grief, regret, and jump/shout happiness form a truly delightful 'easy read' that challenges the reader to look deep into their own lives. Philosophical musings and reflections take the reader on a roller coaster ride of emotions as they experience life through the eyes of a recovering alcoholic who journals the entanglement of his thoughts as he writes of seeing the world through sober eyes for the first time. Tangled Thoughts and affected his will to live. At long last he accepted: his own character flaws and obsessions within his heretofore sordid life; his addictions to alcohol and medications; his vain search for perfection in the dream relationship that doesn t exist, and he surrendered his illusions of grandeur for a more realistic look at life. Through something discovered at an age where most have already acquiesced to life s uncertainties and survived or even prospered ~he found sobriety and a very sobering and shocking experience it was indeed for him. He gained an understanding of the human condition through varied and sometimes challenging life experiences and by having associated with people from all walks of life and economic strata. Seeing life from both sides isn t as pleasant as a Hollywood script might make it appear. Numerous encounters with and near death resulted in a realization of his own mortality, and time spent as a political advisor and campaign consultant for elected officials opened his eyes to the corruption of power and the elusive and nefarious faces of greed and avarice; but all combined to further grant him an appreciation for all that is good ~once found. From his experiences, his life as a writer began to unfold. Published in military circulations; on and in political websites and publications; in newspapers and commentaries ~he chose to embark upon the journey of collecting his thoughts into a free-style approach, somewhat varied from what is often considered the norm, in hopes of achieving a more artistic and humanistic approach to the written word. He hopes his writes will serve to open the minds of the readers to the world of thought ~whether agreeing or disagreeing with his observations being moot. Thinking for one s self seems to have faded in popularity in the world of modern civilization. Through the words he pens, it is his hope that he may create something which will resound vii

David Carroll Christopher Hunnicutt in the minds of others, inspire thoughts from which others may benefit, and even, perhaps, help others to avoid the pitfalls of life he stumbled (or jumped) into. Present Day: At the time of this writing, the author is divorced from a third failed marriage, living alone with his dog Dakota in a small town in Texas, traveling on occasion throughout the American Southwest, and continues to struggle with his addictions; recognizing one never becomes cured of the disease of alcoholism. We (addicts) learn to perceive the realities of our world through eyes others are fortunate to never have to view; and while seeing the world through sober eyes, we strive to leave our regrets in the past where they belong ~behind us He continues the writing of his thoughts, journaling his travels and experiences of life, and trying to determine if the roads taken will forever lead only unto solitude, or? Perhaps that being one of the final questions he has remaining to answer in his quest for his truths. Comment from the author: It is my sincere hope that any and all who take of their time to read the words I pen will find even one thing which helps them to grow as a person, helps them to see their way clear, or helps them to take a positive step where they might have taken a step in a negative direction if not for those words. If my words help but one person in their journey; then my life will be of greater worth than I am deserved of. viii

Tangled Thoughts I pray that all who look within my life, through the good and the bad, will recognize that the mercy and the grace of God always will prevail. So too can it be in their lives ~IF so chosen. We are all compilations of everyone and everything we interact with during our lives; thus, I look forward to feedback from readers. I hope that through continuing to grow spiritually, and ever attempting to become better people, we may have the opportunity to exchange our thoughts, and together learn to always try to do ~the next right thing. If we keep thinking; if we write down and examine the things we think ~then with practice, we might at least become talented at thinking or confusing ourselves whilst entangling our thoughts! The words I ve written reflect my life and the choices I ve made. Enjoy my words! Be grateful for the life you have, and remain ever present therein ~truly living it! ~David~ ix

~Tabula Rasa ~ tabula rasa [ˈtæbjʊlə ˈrɑːsə] n pl tabulae rasae [ˈtæbjʊliː ˈrɑːsiː] 1. (Philosophy) (esp in the philosophy of Locke) the mind in its uninformed original state 2. an opportunity for a fresh start; clean slate [Latin: a scraped tablet (one from which the writing has been erased)] (as defined in: Collins English Dictionary-Complete and Unabridged) We each deserve a clean slate now and then.

Tangled Thoughts Nothing is more lasting than the memory of a spoiled love; ever present, always painful, but never allowed to step forward and be recognized. True love can t have a change of heart, or a change of mind; if it s true then it is. Feelings are not separated by distance or time. "Stability" is attained instantly through the gift of complete and unwavering commitment ~"devotion". When you turn out to be heavier than they thought; people will drop you ~because they can. Everyone 'wants' to stand on top of the mountain Few have what it takes to climb it Once you do manage to climb it; how the hell do you get back down? Now there s a good question! 1

David Carroll Christopher Hunnicutt People will not change what they are; no matter how much they 'want' to ~until/unless they commit to do it with all of their body, mind, and soul. One can touch the soul of another; make sure it is a gentle touch. To look into the eyes of a child is to see the face of God. We each only get one Best Time of our life. Is there only one love of our life? You can t compare others to the past and expect the future to play out better. Trying to be the person God wants you to be is harder than most realize. 2

Tangled Thoughts You can t be the person God wants and still be a person of this world ~Stop trying The most difficult task we face in life is accepting our own destiny, when we realize that destiny isn t what we d hoped it to be. Life changes; and so does every aspect of it one must learn to be thankful for every beautiful moment we are fortunate enough to experience. If you think you found the truth; you probably didn t. Your truth may well be someone else s lie. You never know half as much as you think you know. An eye for an eye makes the world blind. ~Gandhi but A tooth for a tooth stops us from biting each other. ~Thank you Nikki 3

David Carroll Christopher Hunnicutt Everything we believe the future will hold; it won t. One cannot expect a relationship filled with truth to last ~if the very beginning was a lie. You can t make someone feel what they don t feel. When something or someone is gone; it is gone. When someone loves you, they stay forever When someone wants to love you, they don t and they won t. The sweetest apple is at the top of the tree; one must take the risk of climbing to taste it. The sweetest fruit is borne of a cactus; getting through the thorns is worth the pain. Time doesn t heal all wounds ~it just numbs the pain. 4

Tangled Thoughts Whoever said Life begins at forty was totally f**ked up Life never plays out the way you plan. Someone always has a better hand than you. The odds are always in the favor of the house ~ look at the house! True love is most often found ~when it s lost. Humans are not by nature good ; they are evil. Men and women think nothing alike. Happiness is a moment; not a way of life. 5

David Carroll Christopher Hunnicutt The most depressed people act happiest ~in public. The most devious people act kind ~in public. The cruelest people are the ones no one expects. People who want to commit suicide don t threaten it; they do it. People who are going to commit murder don t threaten it; they do it also. People who are going to harm others do it with whatever tool is handy (they don t need an assault weapon ) ~just a rock. We are all responsible for where we are; even if we got there by trusting someone who we feel betrayed us. Trust no man ~only God can be trusted completely. People seldom tell the whole truth. Anything other than the whole truth ~is a lie. 6

Tangled Thoughts Most people say what they think you want to hear; not what they truly mean. The truth is what someone wants you to believe. You can t get someone to understand your side when they only want to see their own. People can t understand you if you don t speak. You will never understand if you don t listen. Nothing you can do will change the actions people are determined to take. People help others primarily to make themselves feel better. 7

David Carroll Christopher Hunnicutt Recognition and fame are powerful motivators for philanthropy. Only God is completely good. Evil is evil; no matter who does it. When trying to eat healthy ~if it tastes good, spit it out. Just because something seems right doesn t mean it is Seek God s council, but if he answers you aloud, seek a psychiatrist! Some things that feel good are fake. Some things that are fake ~feel good. Some things that are real ~really suck! There are good ideas that don t work. 8

Tangled Thoughts There are bad ideas, but they somehow get the job done. The difference between a war hero and a war criminal is simple ~whoever wins. The winner writes the history book, and tells only their side. The loser gets buried alongside the truth. More often than not; the truth imprisons you Especially if spoken to those who don t want to hear it! Only God and animals are capable of giving unconditional love by nature; everyone else has an agenda until they suffer the pain of real love lost. Forever is defined in love as ~ until someone changes their mind All is NOT fair in love and war; both are extremely unfair. 9
