Christ has set you free! Saint Paul Letter to the Christians of Galatia TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 5 JUNE 2016 A Manifesto of Liberty From today until July 3rd, we are reading through Saint Paul s letter to the Christians of Galatia ( Galatians ) as the Second Reading at Sunday Mass. Galatia was the province of the Roman Empire in what is today central Turkey. Written by Paul around 50 AD to the Christians in churches across the province, the letter sometimes is called a manifesto of Christian liberty. Paul is reminding the Galatian Christians that God has sent Jesus Christ to open a clear path for us into a life-giving relationship with Him. The only thing required of us is to place our trust - faith - in the gift of Jesus Christ that the Father has given. Christ has set us free from the burden of any other requirements that well-meaning men and women might think are necessary to receive the Father s gift of new life in Jesus. Paul sums it up in one verse: For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1) God s laws are there to give us a guide to what our life should look like, as we follow the leadership of Jesus. But we never will be changed into that model of Jesus if we try to accomplish this under our own power. Only the Holy Spirit, sent as a gift by the Father and Christ, can transform us and give us the power to live the new life we want to embrace. As Paul writes, If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. (Galatians 5:25) Enjoy these next Sundays as we listen and learn from Paul s Letter of Liberty. To find out more about the communities to whom Paul was writing, I recommend Paul: His Story by Jerome Murphy-O Connor. After a lifetime of writing scholarly books about Paul, Murphy-O Connor wanted to write a friendly, easy reading book - and he has done it! To learn more about Paul s Letter to the Galatians, and read it online, visit www.usccb.org/bible/galatians/0 Father Paul THOUGHTS ON DECORATION DAY When the peonies bloom in May, I think of Decoration Day, May 30th, - now called Memorial Day, the 4th Monday in May. We celebrated Decoration Day / Memorial Day this past Monday. Because of their reliable blooming, peonies traditionally have been planted next to cemeteries, especially in the Midwest. They supply the flowers, on Decoration Day, to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers, those who more than self, their country loved. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow s poem Decoration Day was published in The Atlantic magazine in 1882. Its final stanza reads: Your silent tents of green We deck with fragrant flowers Yours has the suffering been, The memory shall be ours. We have now moved into our 6 th week of the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal. The good news is we have received pledges/gi s from 63 households! But it means there are s#ll 63 households that have not yet responded 50% of the parish! That s the not so good news. However, it s not too late for you to give! Your gift can still help the Annual Catholic Appeal by its support of more than 60 ministries and services that are offered to thousands of individuals across Western Washington. If you haven t already made your gift, won t you please consider making a gift this year? No gift is too small. If you re unsure what to give, please consider a gift of $1 a day or $365 or more. Go online to www.seattlearchdiocese.org/donate or use a pledge envelope. If you d rather call in your gift to the Appeal Office, they can be reached at 206-382-4274 or 206-382-4353. Thank you!
