TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH LEGACY COMMITTEE FUNDING REQUEST God s Resources Managed by God s People in God s Way 2 Corinthians 9:11-12 (NRSV) 11 You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us; 12 for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God. The purpose of the Legacy Committee is to promote and encourage the use of financial gifts, bequests, and restricted funds to further the life and mission of Trinity Presbyterian Church (TPC), to receive and review requests for expenditures of these funds and to recommend action on their use to the Session. Refer to My Understanding of the Church s Corporate Purposes below, and explain how the project aligns with one or more of the church s corporate purposes. MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE CHURCH S CORPORATE PURPOSES The Great Commandment (MT. 22:36-40) and The Great Commission (MT. 28:18-20) The Six Great Ends of the Presbyterian Church ( 2011/2013 Book of Order, F-1.0304) WORSHIP: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind MINISTRY: Love your neighbor as yourself EVANGELISM: Go and Make Disciples FELLOWSHIP: Baptize, belong to, build up, one another in Christ DISCIPLESHIP: Teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you PURPOSE # 1: WORSHIP Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. PCUSA Great End: The maintenance of divine worship The church exists to worship God and to equip people for participation and leadership in worship. Whenever we express our love to God, (alone, in a small group, or in assembly) we worship God. Repeatedly, scriptures command us to magnify the Lord and exalt his name together. Worship should be a passionate experience that engages people of all ages expressing to God their love, joy, thanksgiving, and obedience. PURPOSE #2: MINISTRY Love your neighbor as yourself. PCUSA Great End: The exhibition of the Kingdom of God to The world The church exists to minister to people, to demonstrate God s love by meeting their spiritual, emotional, relational, physical, and social needs. Our calls to social justice and peacemaking remind us that Jesus said, Whenever you did it unto the least of these, my brethren, you did it unto me. The Church exists to equip the saints for the work of ministry (Ephesians 4:12) and Legacy Application Rev.11.2016 2

our doctrine of the priesthood of all believers requires that we validate and train all members of the church and their children for service to others, with Christ as our model. PURPOSE #3: EVANGELISM Go and make disciples of all nations. PCUSA Great Ends: The proclamation of the gospel /The promotion of social righteousness The church exists to spread God s word of salvation and reconciliation. We are Ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17) and our mission is to create an understanding and desire in people to accept Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior. Wherever we go, as we go, we are to tell everyone of Christ s birth, his ministry, his death, his resurrection, and his future coming in judgment. Evangelism is our duty and our privilege to share with others the Gospel of eternal life and God s will to reconcile the world unto Himself. PURPOSE #4: FELLOWSHIP Go, baptizing, teaching. PCUSA Great End: The Shelter, nurture and spiritual fellowship of the children of God. The church exists to provide nurturing relationships with believers. Baptism signifies personal identification and corporate membership in the church; fellowship aims at building up one another to Christian maturity. Through fellowship we call people to believe in God and to belong to God s family, the Church. Through worthwhile study, wholesome recreation, consolation and mutual support, we foster Christian fellowship. We belong to one another; hence we are responsible to and for one another. Our fellowship activities develop sincere and lasting relationships between Christians of all ages to bolster the personal witness, love, support, and mentoring among members of the church family. PURPOSE #5: DISCIPLESHIP Teach them to obey all that I have commanded you. PCUSA Great End: The Preservation of the truth The church exists to educate and edify God s people to personal obedience to God s Word. Looking to the Bible and trusting the Holy Spirit, we are to help people to mature in Christian beliefs, character, values, and actions, in order to become more Christ-like persons. Through Christian education, spiritual disciplines, and service, we become responsible Christians, equipped to do God s work and to be a powerful influence for God in the world.
