From the Pastor Proper Behavior at Mass HOLY MASS We make every effort to prepare our offering, cash or budget envelopes, before Mass begins. The Lord tells us not to let our left hand know what our right hand is doing when we make our offering, but that doesn t mean we can t be prepared in advance when the usher reaches our pew! Keeping the basket waiting while we get our wallet out can sometimes become quite a scene. Most people are ready, I must say from my viewpoint, so this is not a great problem. It is a small courtesy to the rest of the congregation, but one that is much appreciated. There will be a bus trip to St Joseph s Abbey in Spencer, Ma on Friday October 13th. The cost per person is $20.00. We will leave Good Shepherd Parish at 10:00 am and stop for lunch on the way to the Abbey. We will return approximately 7:00pm. Please sign up at the parish office. He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High and abides in the shade of the Almighty says to the Lord my Refuge, my Stronghold, my God in whom I trust. Psalm 90 S u n d ay V e s p e r s Saint of the Week 12 September Saint Hildegard of Bingen Hildegard was born in the Rhineland in 1098. At the age of eight, she went to Disibodenberg, where she was educated under the hermitess Blessed Jutta. When Jutta died in 1136, Hildegard took charge of the group of virgins that had gathered around her. A few years later, she moved the community to Bingen. From a young age, Hildegard had received visions in which she was given mystical knowledge of Christ s love, the Kingdom of God, angels and devils, heaven and hell. Upon becoming abbess of her community, her spiritual director told her to write down what she had received. Over ten years, she produced her main work, Know the Ways of the Lord. Uncertain about her gifts, Hildegard submitted everything to those God had placed over her. From Saint Bernard of Clairvaux she received reassurance of her mission, from Pope Eugenius III the permission to write and speak in public. Hildegard s theology drew from the wellspring of Scriptural and Patristic sources. She was a careful naturalist, with a gift for medicinal healing, she wrote poetry and music to accompany it. Her chant compositions continue to draw a wide following, Hildegard died at the age of eighty-one. In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI canonized her and also name her a Doctor of the Church. Saint Hildegard of Bingen, pray for us! Sunday, October 8th 4:00 p.m. at Saint Stan s We will sing the official prayer of the Catholic Church, the Liturgy of the Hours, or the Divine Office. Come and experience the beauty of singing Evening Prayer with the Universal Church!
