Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (CCC 1214). 2017 Bishop s Annual Stewardship Appeal The Bishop s Annual Stewardship Appeal is now underway. You will soon receive a mailing asking for your family support and participation. Please prayerfully consider a pledge to the Appeal using the response card mailed to you or by completing a Commitment Envelope at Mass the weekend of February 25-26. Our annual theme, "One Faith, One Family continues to remind us that we are members of something greater than ourselves. The Annual Appeal invited each of us to place trust in the Lord by offering our prayers and our gifts. These contributions to your parish and our Diocese serve as a sign of gratitude for each blessing bestowed upon us, and a reminder that everything we are and everything we have comes from God, and God alone. Please prayerfully respond to the Appeal and consider making sacrificial gift in the form of a pledge. Your support to the Appeal makes a tangible difference in our local Church. CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT WEEKEND OF 18-19 FEBRUARY 2017 The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the national anti-poverty program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops, working to carry out the mission of Jesus Christ "... to bring good news to the poor... release to captives... sight to the blind, and let the oppressed go free." (Luke 4:18) The future of humanity does not lie solely in the hands of great leaders, the great powers and the elites. It is fundamentally in the hands of peoples and in their ability to organize. It is in their hands, which can guide with humility and conviction this process of change. I am with you. Each of us, let repeat from the heart: no family without lodging, no rural worker without land, no laborer without rights, no people without sovereignty, no individual without dignity, no child without childhood, no young person without a future, no elderly person without a venerable old age. Pope Francis, Address at the World Meeting of Popular Movements, Bolivia VOLUNTEERS NEEDED WOMEN S BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP The Women s Book Discussion group will meet Sunday February 26 at 9:15 in the downstairs conference room. Stewardship in the parish sixth SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME Masses on February 5, 2017 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Offertory: $5,531.62 Mercedarian Sisters: $5.00 E-Giving: $4,000.98 Grace Marketplace: $20.00 Poor Box: $65.40 Catholic Relief Services: $1,313.84 Catholic Student Center (CSC): $309.40 Renovations/Building Fund: $135.00 STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - THE SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 12, 2017 As surely as the azaleas bloom in the early spring in Gainesville, February also brings the Bishop s Annual Stewardship Appeal (BASA). This weekend is the kick-off for the multi-week appeal, which will culminate on commitment Sunday on February 26. This is an extremely important funding mechanism for the diocese with respect to focused missions that should be near and dear to all of us: seminarian support, Catholic Charities, Catholic education, and communication & evangelization. We have been blessed with an abundance of men willing to offer their lives to God via the priesthood. However, this blessing comes with an immense cost $50,000 annually costs for each seminarian. It s not as if the diocese ran its own seminary. We have to pay to send our seminarians elsewhere in Florida for their training. As a former board member, I have seen firsthand the extreme need for the numerous outreach activities of the Gainesville Catholic Charities office, most important of which is food assistance to our brothers and sisters, particularly school-aged children, who would otherwise go hungry. The weekend hunger backpack program run by St. Augustine s own Cathyann Solomon is a hallmark activity. St. Francis Academy, recently highlighted during Catholic Schools Week, is a major recipient of BASAderived funds. The only Catholic high school in Gainesville has not yet grown to be completely self-supporting. Communication and evangelization fund the St. Augustine Catholic magazine published by the diocese and sent to all registered parishioners, as well as the diocesan web pages. The Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche in St. Augustine is also supported by the appeal. The key to this appeal is that it is not an added second collection where change, loose bills, or checks can be dropped in. The diocese asks that everyone make a contribution of record, no matter the size. You can contribute cash in the envelopes that will be provided or online. Every registered parishioner should have been contacted with information about the appeal and given an opportunity to contribute ahead of time, rather than waiting for commitment weekend. On behalf of Bishop Estevez, I ask everyone to prayerfully consider these missions that are worthy of our support. Stay tuned as we move forward. Paul A.
