TALLIS VOCALIS Tallis Vocalis is Hong Kong s first vocal ensemble dedicated to the performance of early and Renaissance music. Founded by local choral enthusiast Raymond Choi, the ensemble comprises twenty of the territory s best choral singers. The group s repertoire focuses on Renaissance polyphony of the 15th and 16th centuries, with the occasional foray into early Baroque and contemporary works. In 2014 Tallis Vocalis gave its inaugural concert with British conductor Andrew Griffiths from Stile Antico in a programme of English Tudor works. Since then there have been collaborations with British conductors Christopher Watson and Geoffrey Webber in 2015 and 2016 respectively, and a performance at Le French May Festival in 2017 featuring works by Josquin des Prez conducted by Edward Wickham. In October 2017 the ensemble worked with Peter Phillips, director of the worldfamous The Tallis Scholars, in a concert of music by William Byrd and Arvo Pärt. Recently they have expanded their horizon performing with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong and renowned local contemporary dancer Christine He. RAYMOND CHOI Founder, Chairman & CEO Local choral enthusiast Raymond Choi founded Tallis Vocalis in 2013 out of a lifelong love for Renaissance polyphony. He is also the Chairman and CEO of the group. Before founding Tallis Vocalis, Raymond Choi was Chairman of the Hong Kong Bach Choir from 2004 to 2014. Under his dedicated leadership, the Bach Choir cemented its place as the leading classical chorus in Hong Kong. He was responsible for the choir s innovative programming, which mixed the popular repertoire with numerous Asian and local premieres. He has collaborated with local and overseas musicians, singers, chorus masters, conductors and organisations and has led the choir to concerts in Macao and Shanghai. Apart from his role as an arts administrator, Raymond is also an experienced chorister and sings as a bass with Tallis Vocalis. He has also sung with choirs in Hong Kong and the UK such as the Hong Kong Bach Choir, Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus, the Philharmonia Chorus (UK) and the London Philharmonic Choir, under Lorin Maazel, Vladimir Jurowski, Eliahu Inbal, Marin Alsop, Stephen Cleobury, Nicholas Cleobury, Helmuth Rilling and Jerome Hoberman.

SUNG TEXTS & TRANSLATIONS Stabat mater plainchant Stabat Mater dolorosa, Iuxta crucem lacrimosa, Dum pendebat Filius. Cuius animam gementem, contristatam et dolentem, pertransivit gladius. The sorrowful Mother Stood by the Cross, tearful, While her Son hung there. Through her sorrowful spirit, afflicted with sadness and grief, has passed a sword. Stabat mater Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla Text see above. Crux fidelis John IV of Portugal Crux fidelis, inter omnes arbor una nobilis: nulla silva talem profert, fronde, flore, germine. Dulce lignum, dulces clavos, dulce pondus sustinet. Faithful Cross, among all others the one tree most noble: no forest ever yielded an equal in leaf, flower and seed. Sweet wood, sweet nails bear a precious burden. Lamentations of Jeremiah for Maundy Thursday I Tomás Luis de Victoria Incipit lamentatio Jeremiae prophetae. ALEPH. Quomodo sedet sola civitas plena populo: facta est quasi vidua domina gentium; princeps provinciarum facta est sub tributo. BETH. Here begins the lamentation of the prophet Jeremiah. ALEPH. How desolate lies the city that was once full of people: the queen of nations has become as a widow; the ruler of provinces is now subject to others. BETH. By night she weeps in sorrow and tears run down her cheek. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, turn to the Lord your God.

Ecce lignum Crucis plainchant Ecce lignum Crucis, in quo salus mundi pependit, Venite, adoremus. Behold the wood of the Cross, on which hung the Saviour of the world. Come, let us adore. Adoramus te, Christe Claudio Monteverdi Adoramus te, Christe, et benedicimus tibi. Quia per sanguinem tuum pretiosum redemisti mundum; miserere nobis. We adore you, Christ, and worship you. Because by your precious blood you have redeemed the world; have mercy upon us. All you who pass by, behold and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow. Nunc videbitis turbam quæ circumdabit me. My spirit is sorrowful and would die; stay here awhile and keep watch with me Soon you will see a great crowd come to surround me. You will take flight, and I shall be sacrificed for you. Adesto dolori meo, O Deus Giaches de Wert Adesto dolori meo, O Deus, nimium fatigor: et cecidit in luctum cithara mea, et cantatio mea in plorationem. I am consumed with my grief, O God, I am too much tormented: my harp has fallen into mourning, my singing into weeping.

Crucem tuam plainchant Crucem tuam adoramus, Domine: et sanctam resurrectionem tuam laudamus et glorificamus: ecce enim propter lignum venit gaudium in universo mundo. We adore thy Cross, O Lord, and we praise and glorify thy holy Resurrection, for behold by that wood joy came into the whole world. Drop, Drop, Slow Tears Orlando Gibbons Drop, drop, slow tears, And bathe those beauteous feet; Which brought from Heaven The news and Prince of Peace. Cease not, wet eyes, His mercy to entreat; To cry for vengeance Sin doth never cease. In your deep floods Drown all my faults and fears; Nor let His eye See sin, but through my tears. Lamentations of Jeremiah I Thomas Tallis Incipit lamentatio Jeremiae prophetae. Here begins the lamentation of the prophet Jeremiah. ALEPH How desolate lies the city that was once full of people: the queen of nations has become as a widow; the ruler of provinces is now subject to others. BETH By night she weeps in sorrow and tears run down her cheek. All her friends have spurned her and have become her foes. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, turn to the Lord your God. Miserere mihi, Domine William Byrd Miserere mihi, Domine, et exaudi orationem meam Have mercy upon me, O Lord, and hear my prayer. Remember Not, Lord, Our Offences Henry Purcell Remember not, Lord, our offences, nor the offences of our forefathers; neither take thou vengeance of our sins: spare us, good Lord, spare thy people, whom thou hast redeemed with thy most precious blood, and be not angry with us for ever. Spare us, good Lord.

Vexilla Regis plainchant Exilla Regis prodeunt: Fulget Crucis mysterium, qua vita mortem pertulit, et morte vitam protulit. The banners of the King go forth, the mystery of the Cross shines, by which life overcame death and by death gave birth to life. Spare me, o Lord, for my days are as nothing. What is man that you should esteem him And that you should fix your heart upon him? That you should visit him at daybreak and straightaway test him? How long will you neither spare me, nor forgive me, so that I may swallow my spittle? I have sinned; what shall I do to you, O preserver of men? Why have you set me against you, that I have become a burden to my very self? Why do you not take away my sin and why do you not remove my iniquity? Behold, I shall now sleep in the dust, and if you seek me in the morning, I shall not be there. My harp is turned to grieving and my flute to the voice of those who weep. Spare me, O Lord, for my days are as nothing.
