D I S C I P L E S H I P p. 4 Stewardship of Giving What is discipleship? Discipleship is living as Christ called us to live. It is following to the best of our abilities the perfect model that He provides us. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that it is a vocation to holiness and to the mission of evangelizing the world. (CCC1513) as we are called to follow and imitate Christ (CCC520). It s a vocation, more than a job, it s a calling. The scope is no less than evangelizing the world. Luckily, there are many workers in His vineyard, and whether we were called to work in the morning or at the end of the day, we ll all receive a fair day s wage. All we have to do is follow His lead. Here at St Rose, we have embraced the journey into intentional discipleship and stewardship. As part of this journey, it s worth revisiting a few tenets that will form the basis for understanding the need to be disciples and good stewards. 1. Identity: We are created in the likeness and image of God. We are created by God for God; to love and serve Him. 2. Trust: We are called to carry out His will, not ours. Everything we have comes from God. We can trust in Him because he created us. 3. Gratitude: Accepting and trusting that all things come from God, by His will, leads directly to our need to express gratitude for the gifts He s bestowed 4. Love: We are created by God to love Him. Love is a gift that must be given freely. In loving God, we are called to love one another. So, what s next for St Rose? Are you ready to work in His vineyard? F A I T H F O R M AT I O N p. 5 Society of St. Vincent de Paul Jr. Vincentian Parents & Students of the EDGE & Life Teen Programs Many of you have heard the names St. Vincent de Paul and Jr. Vincentians on our campus and in our bulletin, and some of you are already involved. This letter is to invite the young people (Grades 5-12) of our parish and their parents to take a look at what we are about. The purpose of Junior Vincentians is to encourage our young people to grow closer to God by serving others. They do this by becoming Junior members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Our Junior Vincentians Program which is made up of Middle & High School age students, have opportunities to help with fundraisers, assist with food drives, serve at the Family Evening Meal at the St. Vincent de Paul dining hall, befriend the elderly folks at the local group homes, and many other activities. The Jr. Vincentians will meet once a month on the last EDGE and Life Teen Sunday @ 2:30pm in the Church Office. All young people participating in these programs are encouraged to attend as this program will be the SERVICE COMPONENT of our program. The focus of our meetings is to prayerfully reflect on our purpose, discuss upcoming activities, and to get ideas from the group regarding additional ways that we can help the needy. Participation in Jr. Vincentian activities can count as required service hours for NJHS, NHS, etc.. Our first meeting will be held Sun., Sept. 30th Why is Religious Education Important: Fulfilling our Baptismal Mission as priests Last bulletin we talked about the idea that at our Baptism we are called to 3 distinct roles: Priest, Prophet, and King. Today we are going to dive into what it means to be called to a priestly role. Let s look at the Catechism of the Catholic Church 784: On entering the People of God through faith and Baptism, one receives a share in this people's unique, priestly vocation: Christ the Lord, high priest taken from among men, has made this new people 'a kingdom of priests to God, his Father.' The baptized, by regeneration and the anointing of the Holy Spirit, are consecrated to be a spiritual house and a holy priesthood." In order to understand what this means for our lives, we have to first understand what it means to be a priest. Priesthood has at its center sacrifice. When a man becomes an ordained priest he sacrifices his life in a very unique and special way. His life is no longer his own- he pledges his obedience and receives an indelible mark on his soul marking him eternally as a priest. (CCC 1581-1584) In fact, during the Ordination, those being ordained literally lie face down on the floor (prostrate) to symbolize the humble gift of their entire self to Christ in their priesthood. Jesus Christ was, as the Catechism states, the High Priest. Why? Because He is the ultimate sacrifice. He gave His life on the cross and gives it again and again every time we celebrate the Mass. There is no greater sacrifice. When we are baptized we are given the mission to share in that priestly calling of sacrifice. Everyone married, single, religious we ALL are called to live lives of sacrifice. Even our children, young as they are, can start to learn and live a sacrificial life. That s something that St Rose RE strives to bring to our young people: the knowledge that they are called to this priestly role and the practical steps for how to live that out. That is the beauty of our faith. The Scriptures give us the story of how Christ set the perfect example of Priest, Prophet, and King and our 2,000 + years of tradition and gift of the Sacraments help us to live our call out. RE helps our young people discover the richness of our faith alongside their peers.
